Diphyllobothrium sprakeri n. sp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae): a hidden broad tapeworm from sea lions off North and South America.

BACKGROUND: The systematic of several marine diphyllobothriid tapeworms of pinnipeds has been revised in recent years. However, 20 species of Diphyllobothrium from phocids and otariids are still recognized as incertae sedis. We describe a new species of Diphyllobothrium from the intestine of California sea lions Zalophus californianus (Lesson) (type-host) and South American sea lions Otaria flavescens (Shaw). METHODS: Zalophus californianus from the Pacific coast of the USA and O. flavescens from Peru and Argentina were screened for parasites. Partial fragments of the large ribosomal subunit

Clinical relevance of novel Otarine herpesvirus-3 in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus): lymphoma, esophageal ulcers, and strandings.

Herpesviruses have been recognized in marine mammals, but their clinical relevance is not always easy to assess. A novel otarine herpesvirus-3 (OtHV3) was detected in a geriatric California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), and using a newly developed quantitative PCR assay paired with histology, OtHV3 was associated with esophageal ulcers and B cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in this animal. The prevalence and quantities of OtHV3 were then determined among buffy coats from 87 stranded and managed collection sea lions. Stranded sea lions had a higher prevalence of OtHV3 compared to managed collec

Improved semen collection method for wild felids: urethral catheterization yields high sperm quality in African lions (Panthera leo).

For wild and domestic felids, electroejaculation (EE) is the most common semen collection method. However, the equipment is expensive, there is a risk of urine contamination and animals usually show strong muscular contraction despite general anesthesia. Accordingly, we tested the feasibility of a different approach using urethral catheterization (UC) in seven African lions, previously described for domestic cats only. After general anesthesia with the α2-agonist medetomidine (which also stimulates semen release into the urethra) and ketamine, a transrectal ultrasound was performed to locate t

Identity of Diphyllobothrium spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) from sea lions and people along the Pacific coast of South America.

Host specificity evidently is not expressed by various species of Diphyllobothrium that occur typically in marine mammals, and people become infected occasionally when dietary customs favor ingestion of plerocercoids. This report mainly concerns 2 species, Diphyllobothrium pacificum and Diphyllobothrium arctocephalinum, for which sea lions (Otariidae) are final hosts. The taxonomic status of those cestodes has not been clearly discernible because of misinterpretation of relationships; complex synonymies have resulted from misidentification(s). Stiles and Hassall in 1899 obtained, but did not d

Common metastatic carcinoma of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus): evidence of genital origin and association with novel gammaherpesvirus.

Tissues from 10 adult California sea lions (Zalophus californianus, seven females and three males) that had metastatic carcinoma in sublumbar area lymph nodes were examined histologically. A distinctive epithelial proliferative lesion interpreted as intraepithelial neoplasia was found in genital tracts of all ten animals; in vagina (5/7), cervix (7/7), uterus (3/7), penis (3/3) and prepuce (3/3). Intraepithelial neoplasia closely resembled metastatic carcinomas and was directly contiguous with invasive carcinoma in one animal. Rare eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were found in penil

[Corneoscleral transplant excision in the cadaver. Experiences of the North Rhine Westphalia Lions Cornea Bank 1995 and 1996].

BACKGROUND: Donor corneas are normally obtained by whole globe enucleation-a procedure often refused by the bereaved. To increase the acceptance of cornea donation, we have exclusively obtained donor corneas by in situ excision since the end of 1994. There have been reports of increased endothelial damage and higher contamination rates. We report our experience in 1995 and 1996. METHODS: The in situ excision was performed by staff trained in microsurgical techniques. Only donor corneas with negative end-storage cultures after at least 10 days and an endothelial cell count of more than 2500 ce

Determinants for Congenital Clubfoot in Ethiopia: A Case-Control Study at Black Lion Specialized Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is a frequently occurring congenital deformity and continues to be overlooked public health concern, especially among children under-fives year old in low and middle-income countries, where approximately 90% of cases occur in these developing world. Despite this significant burden, no observational studies in Ethiopia have examined the factors influencing clubfoot deformities. To bridge this gap, our study aimed to investigate the determinants of congenital clubfoot among children attended the black lion hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An institution-based, unmatched case

Taking Stock: Assessing Animal Welfare in South African Captive Lion Tourism Venues.

South Africa maintains thousands of captive lions and other felids in commercial captive wildlife facilities. Despite ongoing debate regarding the welfare implications of this industry, empirical assessments of welfare conditions remain limited. This study conducted a baseline assessment of welfare and husbandry conditions in public-facing captive lion venues in South Africa. A welfare assessment framework was applied across 34 tourism venues in Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo and North West provinces. Ten welfare indices were evaluated: mobility, environmental noise quality, shelter, hygiene, na

A Multimodal Approach to Treatment and Management of Rumination Syndrome in a California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus).

The management of chronic rumination syndrome in professionally cared-for animals requires a comprehensive and individualized approach. In this case study, a multimodal approach incorporating pharmacological treatment, feeding modifications, and behavioral management was applied to a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) with rumination syndrome, megaesophagus, and hypothyroidism. Behavioral observations were collected through video recordings both prior to and post-intervention. Interventions included oral naltrexone and contingent reinforcement post-feed to provide alternative enrichm

Rustrela Virus in Wild Mountain Lion (Puma concolor) with Staggering Disease, Colorado, USA.

We identified a rustrela virus variant in a wild mountain lion (Puma concolor) in Colorado, USA. The animal had clinical signs and histologic lesions compatible with staggering disease. Considering its wide host range in Europe, rustrela virus should be considered as a cause for neurologic diseases among mammal species in North America.

Novel alphaherpesvirus in a wild South American sea lion (Otaria byronia) with pulmonary tuberculosis.

In 2017, an adult male South American sea lion (Otaria byronia), presenting emaciation and a cervical abscess, stranded alive in Florianópolis, southern Brazil. The animal was directed to a rehabilitation center, dying a few days later. On necropsy, the main gross findings were necrotizing lymphadenitis of the right prescapular lymph node and nodular bronchopneumonia. A novel alphaherpesvirus, tentatively named Otariid alphaherpesvirus 1, was amplified in several tissue samples. No histopathologic findings associated with viral infection were observed. Additionally, pulmonary tuberculosis by M

Assessment of different sperm functional tests in golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas).

The golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is an endangered species endemic to Brazil's Atlantic Forest, a shrinking biodiversity hotspot. As in other Neotropical primates, its semen characteristics and freezability are poorly studied. Hence, reproductive technologies for callitrichids would greatly benefit from reliable methods of semen analysis. In a bid to promote reproductive research in tamarins, we validated simple and inexpensive sperm function tests that can be used to monitor sperm-egg binding, plasma membrane and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial activity, and DNA fr

Trichinella spiralis in a South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) from Patagonia, Argentina.

Trichinella spp. from a sylvatic cycle has been found in several animal species such as pumas (Puma concolor), armadillos (Chaetophractus villosus), rats (Rattus norvegicus), and wild boars (Sus scrofa) in Argentina. Moreover, Trichinella infection has been detected in a wide range of marine mammals around the world, including polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and walruses (Odobenus rosmarus). Until the present time, Trichinella spp. infection has not been detected in marine mammals of South America. Samples from four South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) found dead in Rio Negro, Argentina,

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of a Chiari I-like malformation in an African lion (Panthera leo).

A 13-mo-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) presented with a 3-mo history of lethargy, ventral flexion of the neck, abnormal vocalization, and ataxia. Hemogram and serum biochemistries were within normal limits except for the presence of hypokalemia (2.7 mEq/L) and hypochloridemia (108 mEq/L). When no improvement was noted with oral potassium gluconate supplementation, a computed tomography scan of the brain and skull was performed, and no abnormalities were noted. However, magnetic resonance imaging detected occipital bone thickening, crowding of the caudal cranial fossa with cerebell

Particulate and soluble hexavalent chromium are cytotoxic and genotoxic to Steller sea lion lung cells.

Hexavalent chromium is an environmental contaminant. Within the environment, marine waters are a common site for hexavalent chromium deposition. We have recently reported significantly high levels of chromium in skin tissue from North Atlantic right whales. These findings demonstrate that marine species are being exposed to chromium. It is possible that such exposures may be playing a role in population declines evident among certain marine mammals, such as the Steller sea lion. We developed a Steller sea lion lung cell line from Steller sea lion lung tissue. Hexavalent chromium was cytotoxic

Species of the family Helicobacteraceae detected in an Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) with chronic gastritis.

We describe the first case of gastritis in a male Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) in which members of the family Helicobacteraceae, particularly the genus Wolinella, were detected. The sea lion exhibited clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease, including abdominal pain, lack of appetite, and lethargy. Examination of one ileal and five gastric biopsy specimens collected over a 10-year period revealed persistent fibrosis and/or superficial focal erosion and ulceration of the lamina propria. Spiral-shaped organisms 5 to 12 microm long were observed in two of the gut biopsy specimens. Wh

Evidence of Leptospira interrogans infection in California sea lion pups from the Gulf of California.

Forty-two urine and 96 blood and serum samples were obtained from California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups from the Gulf of California during the 2000 reproductive season. Antibody prevalence to 13 serovars of Leptospira interrogans was determined by microagglutination tests (MAT); presence of pathogenic leptospires was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Samples with antibody titers > or = 1:25 or 115 bp fragments on ethidium bromidestained 1.5% agarose gels were considered positive. Antibody prevalence was 54% overall with highest prevalence against serovar cynopteri (50% o
