Observations about declining fertility in a feline breeding colony.

Feline breeding colonies are important to the feline industry by preserving traits desirable for a particular breed or in research settings by maintaining medically valuable genetic traits. As breeding females age, their reproductive efficiency declines. The objective of this study was to determine the most common causes of infertility in breeding females that were producing fewer kittens. Knowing the cause and average age of infertility would allow management decisions to be made for the betterment of the colony. The medical records of 70 queens retired from breeding from a single research co

Pregnancy in pigs: the journey of an early life.

Embryo mortality is responsible for greater losses in litter size in pigs. It is well known that pregnancy establishment is a complex process, and important changes occur continuously in both the corpora lutea and the endometrium, which varies depending on the pre-natal development phase: embryonic, pre-implantation or fetal stages. The placenta is a key organ responsible for the exchange of nutrients, metabolites and respiratory gases between mother and fetuses. The porcine placenta is diffuse, epitheliochorial, and placentation begins with implantation, which involves specialized cell adhesi

A comparison of the reproductive performance in primiparous sows following two timed artificial insemination protocols.

Timed artificial insemination (TAI) is an efficient reproductive technology in batch farrowing production that aids management in pig farms. However, the effect of TAI on the reproduction performance is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two TAI protocols on the reproductive performance of primiparous sows. A total of 332 weaned sows were randomly allocated into three treatments. Sows assigned to Control (n = 110) were untreated and inseminated on each day in oestrus after weaning. Sows assigned to eG-TAI (n = 112) received equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) 24 h

Behavioral and physiological responses to early weaning in ewes and their single or twin lambs.

As during the early postpartum, ewes and their twin lambs have a weaker bond than ewes that rear single lambs; it might be expected that early artificial weaning would trigger less intense behavioral and physiological responses in mothers and their twin lambs than in mothers and their single lambs. The aim of this study was to compare the behavioral and physiological responses of ewes and their twin or single lambs to early weaning. The study was performed with 19 Saint Croix ewes: 10 bearing single lambs and nine bearing twins (data from only one sibling from each pair of twins was collected)

A review of maternal behaviour in dogs and potential areas for further research.

Here we review information on maternal behaviour in dogs, defined as a combination of all the acts of the mother towards her offspring, which begins before parturition and continues until weaning. In dogs, maternal care is measured using the most commonly observed behaviours, such as the time spent in contact, licking/grooming and nursing of the puppies. Since newborn puppies have a very limited capacity for movement, maternal interaction is essential to their survival, nourishment and protection. It is also an important element of the bonding process between puppies and the bitch and is thoug

Captive parturition and neonatal growth of the dwarf ornate wobbegong (Orectolobus ornatus de Vis, 1883).

Neonatal predation in multispecies aquarium exhibits can prevent detection of captive breeding by wobbegong sharks. We used ultrasonography and isolation strategies to prevent neonatal predation and maximize survival/growth of the dwarf ornate wobbegong (Orectolobus ornatus de Vis, 1883). We captured seven free-living wobbegongs (two males and five females) and subjected each animal to a health assessment which led to the euthanasia of one female with a retained hook. Ultrasonography showed that females were pregnant, one was preovulatory, and one was in a resting phase. Two females (one pregn

Major role of suckling stimulation for inhibition of estrous behaviors in lactating rabbits: acute and chronic effects.

Lactation in rabbits induces anestrus: sexual receptivity and scent-marking (chinning) are reduced despite the brevity of suckling (one daily nursing bout, lasting around 3 min). The mechanisms underlying this effect are unknown but, as chinning, lordosis, and ambulation in an open field are immediately inhibited by the peripheral stimulation received during mating we hypothesized that, across lactation, suckling stimulation would provoke a similar effect. To test this possibility we provided litters of 1, 3, 5, or 10 pups across lactation days 1-15 and quantified chinning and ambulation frequ

Minimum number of spermatozoa required for normal fertility after deep intrauterine insemination in non-sedated sows.

A fibreoptic endoscope procedure for non-surgical deep intrauterine insemination in non-sedated sows has been reported. However, the endoscope is an expensive and fragile instrument, and is unsuitable for use under field conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum number of spermatozoa required to maintain optimal fertility using a flexible catheter (1.8 m in length, 4 mm in diameter) for deep intrauterine insemination in 2-6 parity non-sedated sows. Crossbred sows were treated with eCG 24 h after weaning and with hCG 72 h later to induce oestrus. Deep intrauterine inseminat

Time trends and epidemiological patterns of perinatal lamb mortality in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mortality is a major cause of loss in the sheep industry. Our aim was to explore time trends in crude population stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates in Norway. We used data on 6,435,715 lambs from flocks enrolled in the Norwegian Sheep Recording System (NSRS) from 2000 through 2010 for descriptive analysis of trends. Longitudinal patterns of mortality rates were compared for lambs within different levels of variables suspected to be associated with perinatal loss. RESULTS: There was an approximately linear increase in the annual proportion of stillborn lambs during t

Effects of thalidomide on developmental, peri- and postnatal function in female New Zealand white rabbits and offspring.

The present study determined effects of thalidomide on three successive generations of New Zealand White rabbits after oral dosing to F0 maternal rabbits during the later third of gestation (post major organogenesis) and lactation. One hundred and twenty four time-mated F0 rabbits (31/dose) were gavaged with 0, 30, 150, or 500 mg/kg thalidomide from gestation day 18 (DG 18) to lactation day 28 (DP or day postpartum 28) for approximately 42 days. At 6 months, 12 F1 males and 12 F1 females were randomly paired within each dose group and mated. Reproductive evaluation and/or gross necropsy of the

Treadmill walking differently affects body composition and metabolic parameters of female rats from normal or small litters.

This work assessed whether walking affects bodily development and metabolic parameters of female rats raised in small litters (three pups, group S) or control litters (nine pups, group C). After weaning, some of the rats had five sessions per week of a 30-min treadmill walking (CE and SE), while the others remained sedentary (CS and SS) until the age of 120 days. Exercise caused a reduction of body weight (CS/CE = 1.18), Lee index (CS/CE = 1.04), fasting blood glucose (CS/CE = 1.35), mesenteric (CS/CE = 1.23), and ovarian fat (CS/CE = 1.33) in CE, but only glucose was decreased in SE (SS/SE =

Effects of low intermittent concentrations of nitrous oxide on the developing rat fetus.

Five groups of 12 gravid female rats were exposed, during their entire gestation, intermittently for 6 h a day, 5 days per week, to 0.5% (5000 p.p.m.), 0.1% (1000 p.p.m.), 0.05% (500 p.p.m.) and 0.025% (250 p.p.m.) nitrous oxide-air mixtures (v/v), respectively. After killing the gravid rats on the 19th day of their pregnancies the numbers of corpora lutea of pregnancy were counted. Each uterus was examined for placentation sites and embryonic remnants and a detailed examination of the fetuses was undertaken. A significant reduction in mean litter size occurred only in the group exposed to 0.5

Sperm solute carrier family 9 regulator 1 is correlated with boar fertility.

Predicting male fertility is extremely important for artificial insemination and profitable farm management. Conventional semen assessment together with computer-assisted sperm analysis is widely used to predict male fertility under field conditions. However, the clinical validation and sensitivity of these methods remain unclear. Therefore, a new approach is needed to predict male fertility. Here, we investigated the use of a transcriptomic marker (solute carrier family 9, subfamily A, member 3, regulator 1; SLC9A3R1) together with sperm motility parameters and capacitation status to predict

Obesity induced by neonatal overfeeding worsens airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for the development of certain respiratory diseases, and neonatal overfeeding results in an early onset of obesity in adulthood. However, the influence of neonatal overfeeding on respiratory diseases has rarely been studied. Therefore, this paper is aimed at investigating the effect of neonatal overfeeding on airway responsiveness and inflammation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The neonatal overfeeding was induced by reducing litter size to three pups per litter (small litter, SL) in contrast to the normal litter size with ten pups per litter (NL) on pos

Postnatal undernutrition increases estradiol plasma levels and sexual receptivity and disrupts the kisspeptin-GnRH pathway in adult female rats.

Undernutrition has increased worldwide in recent years and it is known that environmental factors to which individuals are exposed in early life can result in metabolic and reproductive changes that remain in adult life. In this context, the litter size expansion is a classic model used to induce undernutrition early in development. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of neonatal undernutrition induced by the litter size expansion on metabolic and reproductive parameters of female rats. At birth, litter size was adjusted to large (LL - 16 pups) and normal (NL - 10 pups) litters. Aft

Sex chromosome chimerism and the freemartin syndrome in Rideau Arcott sheep.

In cattle, nearly all heifers born co-twin to a male are freemartins, XX/XY chimeras that exhibit a characteristic masculinized phenotype. However, in sheep, while litters containing males and females are common, freemartins are relatively rare. The primary aim of this study was to determine the frequency and features of XX/XY chimerism in female Rideau Arcott sheep. Also, breeding records were used to investigate the effect of litter size and sex ratios, as well as the genetic basis of the condition. Finally, the migration and transcriptional competence of cells of the opposite sex in the XX/

Effects of early monocular enucleation on cortical spreading depression in well-nourished and malnourished adult rats.

Sensory development is a complex process that can influence physiological and pathological factors. In laterally-eyed mammals, monocular enucleation (ME) during development and the subsequent lack of external sensory stimuli can result in permanent morphological and physiological changes. Malnutrition, especially in early life, also can cause permanent morphofunctional changes due to inadequate nutrient intake in both hemispheres. This study investigated the effects of early (postnatal day 7) ME and malnutrition during the suckling period on cortical excitability in adulthood (110-140 days of

Transplacental transmission of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus in mice.

Transplacental infection of mouse fetuses with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis was produced by intraperitoneal injection of dams at various stages of gestation with 10(3) suckling mouse intracerebral median lethal doses of an attenuated strain (TC-83). Virus inoculation, at times ranging from 6 days prior to mating to 9 days after conception, had no effect on conception rate, litter size, or survival of the newborn. Inoculation of the dam from the 10th to 13th days of gestation resulted in decreased litter size, an increase in stillbirths, and a decrease in birth-to-weaning survival. Inocu
