VITALdb: to select the best viroinformatics tools for a desired virus or application.

The recent pandemics of viral diseases, COVID-19/mpox (humans) and lumpy skin disease (cattle), have kept us glued to viral research. These pandemics along with the recent human metapneumovirus outbreak have exposed the urgency for early diagnosis of viral infections, vaccine development, and discovery of novel antiviral drugs and therapeutics. To support this, there is an armamentarium of virus-specific computational tools that are currently available. VITALdb (VIroinformatics Tools and ALgorithms database) is a resource of ~360 viroinformatics tools encompassing all major viruses (SARS-CoV-2

High diversity and distribution of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Sudan emphasizes the need for implementing cost-effective community One Health strategy.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) represent a growing challenge to both animal and human health in Sudan. However, the absence of consolidated nationwide data limits accurate characterization of tick fauna, monitoring of shifts in species distribution, and detection of invasive species. This knowledge gap not only constrains understanding of vector ecology but also weakens efforts to link tick distribution with disease occurrence, thereby undermining targeted control strategies. Livestock TBDs, including theileriosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and lumpy skin disease, cause substantial econo

Tick-borne pathogens in Mongolian ticks: The high prevalence of Rickettsia raoultii and its public health implications.

In Mongolia, a substantial segment of the population is engaged in pastoralism, leading to frequent interactions with livestock and heightened exposure to tick-infested environments. Consequently, ticks and the endemic tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) they harbor present significant health threats. In May 2021, we conducted a study to evaluate the prevalence of 9 TBPs in ticks collected from four regions in Mongolia: Uvurkhangai, Tuv, Bayan-Ulgii, and Khentii. The pathogens surveyed included Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Bartonella, Borrelia, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Toxoplasma, Theileria, and lumpy skin disea

Global vaccination coverage and disease incidence in cattle, pigs, and poultry.

Vaccination against livestock diseases is an effective method to prevent and control the spread of pathogens and reduce antimicrobial consumption and livestock production losses. Systematic data on global vaccination coverage could unlock opportunities to expand these outcomes. In this study, we estimate annual vaccination coverage and disease incidence for 104 cattle, porcine, and poultry diseases in 203 reporting countries and territories between 2005 and 2025 using data from the World Animal Health Information System, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and published literature. We provi

Hesperetin blocks poxvirus replication with a low tendency to select for drug-resistant viral variants.

In this study, we demonstrated the antiviral efficacy of hesperetin against multiple poxviruses, including buffalopox virus (BPXV), vaccinia virus (VACV), and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV). The time-of-addition and virus step-specific assays indicated that hesperetin reduces the levels of viral DNA, mRNA, and proteins in the target cells. Further, by immunoprecipitation (IP) of the viral RNA from BPXV-infected Vero cells and a cell-free RNA-IP assay, we demonstrated that hesperetin-induced reduction in BPXV protein synthesis is also consistent with diminished interaction between eukaryotic t

Morbidity in California giant salamander (Dicamptodon ensatus Eschscholtz, 1833) caused by Euryhelmis sp. Poche, 1926 (Trematoda: Heterophyiidae).

In the fall of 2021, California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported larval and adult California giant salamanders (Dicamptodon ensatus Eschscholtz, 1833) with skin lesions at multiple creeks in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties, California, USA. Field signs in both stages included rough, lumpy textured skin, and larvae with tails that were disproportionately long, flat, wavy, and flaccid. Presence of large-bodied larvae suggested delayed metamorphosis, with some larvae having cloudy eyes and suspected blindness. To determine the cause of the disease, three first-of-the-year salamanders

The role of wildlife in the epidemiology and control of Foot-and-mouth-disease And Similar Transboundary (FAST) animal diseases: A review.

Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) are notifiable diseases which are highly transmissible and have the potential for rapid spread regardless of national borders. Many TADs are shared between domestic animals and wildlife, with the potential to affect both livestock sector and wildlife conservation and eventually, public health in the case of zoonosis. The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD), a commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has grouped six TADs as 'Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) And Similar Transboundary animal

Cattle movement as a risk factor for epidemics.

Cattle movement is one of the most important risk factors for the occurrence of an epidemic. It is a legal requirement in Switzerland that every cattle movement be reported, and this information is held in the Swiss cattle movement database (Tierverkehrsdatenbank, TVD). Using this data we examined all movements, focusing on the geographical distribution of these movements in relation to the spread of epizootic diseases. We considered the period 01 January 2011 through 30 January 2012, in which a total of 786'462 cattle were moved. Looking at premises individually, a maximum of 901 possible tra

Concentration- and Time-Dependent Virucidal Responses of Major Transboundary Animal Disease Viruses to Disinfectants.

Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) pose persistent threats to global livestock production, and chemical disinfection remains a critical component of biosecurity. However, virucidal efficacy is commonly assessed using single-condition endpoints, limiting comparative interpretation across biologically heterogeneous viruses. In this study, an experimental framework explicitly structured across virus species, disinfectant concentration, and contact time was applied to systematically compare virucidal response patterns across four major TAD viruses-avian influenza virus, African swine fever virus

Humoral and cytokine responses to a heterologous goatpox vaccine in Mithun (Bos frontalis): a longitudinal field study.

INTRODUCTION: Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), caused by a Capripoxvirus, has caused severe outbreaks among cattle in India. The disease status and vaccine response of Mithun (Bos frontalis), a semi-domesticated bovine species of major socio-economic importance in Northeast India, remain poorly understood. Because sero-epidemiological findings have indicated LSDV exposure in Mithun, preventive interventions are needed. METHODS: We conducted a 12-month longitudinal field study in Nagaland to assess the safety and vaccine-induced immune response of a heterologous goatpox vaccine in seronegative Mithun

Rapid point-of-care lateral flow assay for differentiation of capripoxviruses using RPA-CRISPR-Cas12a.

The Capripoxviruses (CaPVs) are highly contagious viruses that includes sheeppox virus, goatpox virus, and lumpy skin disease virus infecting sheep, goats, and cattle respectively resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. This study presents a diagnostic tool based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assisted with CRISPR-Cas12a platform coupled with a lateral flow assay (LFA) that facilitate timely detection and differentiation of Capripox viruses, and support effective surveillance programs. The assay operates through the cleavage of a dual labelled oligonucleotide reporter

Reframing veterinary vaccine quality control: Integrating alternative assays within lifecycle-based regulatory frameworks.

Veterinary vaccine quality assurance has traditionally relied on animal-based potency, safety, and efficacy tests, including challenge protection and in vivo titration assays. Although historically regarded as regulatory gold standards, these methods are increasingly constrained by ethical considerations, high costs, limited throughput, and prolonged timelines. In response, strong scientific and regulatory momentum now supports alternative approaches that reduce or replace animal use while maintaining confidence in vaccine performance. This review critically examines the current landscape of n

Tick-Borne Diseases in Turkey: A Review Based on One Health Perspective.

The importance of tick-borne diseases is increasing all over the world, including Turkey. Global warming, environmental and ecological changes and the existence of suitable habitats increase the impact of ticks and result in frequent emergence or re-emergence of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) with zoonotic characteristics. In Turkey, almost 19 TBDs have been reported in animals and men, involving four protozoa (babesiosis, theileriosis, cytauxzoonosis, hepatozoonosis), one filarial nematode (acanthocheilonemasis), ten bacterial agents (anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, aegyptianellosis, tick-borne typhu

In-vitro and in-vivo study of the interference between Rift Valley fever virus (clone 13) and Sheeppox/Limpy Skin disease viruses.

Viral interference is a common occurrence that has been reported in cell culture in many cases. In the present study, viral interference between two capripox viruses (sheeppox SPPV and lumpy skin disease virus LSDV in cattle) with Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) was investigated in vitro and in their natural hosts, sheep and cattle. A combination of SPPV/RVFV and LSDV/RVFV was used to co-infect susceptible cells and animals to detect potential competition. In-vitro interference was evaluated by estimating viral infectivity and copies of viral RNA by a qPCR during three serial passages in cell c
