Helobdella nilae and Alboglossiphonia conjugata leeches as biological agents for snails control.

The efficacy of leeches, as biological agents, in control of snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis (Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria alexandrina) and fascioliasis (Lymnaea natalensis) as well as their effect on the non-target snails Physa acuta, Melanioides tuberculata and Cleopatra bulimoides was evaluated. Two glossiphoniid snail leeches, Helobdella nilae and Alboglossiphonia conjugata were used. They destroyed egg masses and young snails more rapidly than adult ones. H. nilae showed a stronger destructive effect than A. conjugata. In a descending order, it preferred L. natalensis follo

Experimental infections with Fasciola in snails, mice and rabbits.

Experimental infection trails of Lymnaea (cailliaudi) natalensis snails with miracidia of Fasciola hepatica revealed neither cercariae nor larval stages shed. Infection of white mice with metacercariae from field-collected snails proved to be negative for Fasciola eggs and immature juveniles or adults after 84 days post infection. The infection of eight rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has succeeded; two rabbits were infected, with a very low infection rate. Faeces of rabbits were negative for eggs. The worm burden was one and three worms from 40 fed metacercariae. The obtained fluke measures 2

Multiple cellular and subcellular actions of general anaesthetics on cultured molluscan neurones.

The pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis has been used as a model system to study the cellular and subcellular actions of general anaesthetics. Here we describe the actions of general anaesthetics mainly on cultured, identified neurones, maintained in isolation to prevent the actions of synaptic inputs upon them. Using the whole-cell patchclamp technique, we have found that application of clinical concentrations of inhalational anaesthetics (halothane and isoflurane) and barbiturates depresses whole-cell calcium currents and potassium currents in a concentration-dependent manner. After loading culture

An epidemiological study of Fasciola hepatica in The Netherlands.

Transmission of F. hepatica under natural conditions was analysed in a three year programme. The variables used were the indirect haemagglutination (IHA) technique, worm establishment in tracer lambs and the population dynamics, infection rate and shedding pattern of Lymnaea truncatula. It is concluded that fluke eggs, infected snails and metacercariae on herbage can survive the winter in the Netherlands. Metacercarial availability was positively correlated to the amount of rainfall in the grazing period. The role developed eggs that survive the winter is important, because this results in ear

Heterogeneous zonal impacts of climate change on a wide hyperendemic area of human and animal fascioliasis assessed within a One Health action for prevention and control.

The Northern Bolivian Altiplano is the fascioliasis endemic area where the highest prevalences and intensities in humans have been recorded. In this hyperendemic area of human fascioliasis, the disease is caused only by Fasciola hepatica and transmitted by Galba truncatula, the sole lymnaeid species present in the area. When analysing the link between global warning and the recently reported geographical spread of lymnaeid populations to out-border localities, a marked heterogeneous climatic change was found throughout the endemic area. The aim of the present study was to analyse the physiogra

[A survey of Planorbidae in the state of São Paulo: the 8th Administrative Region (the greater São Jose do Rio Preto area)].

In order to know the distributional patterns of Basommatophoran snails in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), 85 "counties" in the area of S. José do Rio Preto were worked out during seven months (1982). Snails from 286 breeding places were collected and identified. Biomphalaria straminea, an intermediate host of S. mansoni, was found in four little ponds, in the neighbourhood of Altair and S. José do Rio Preto. It was concluded that schistosomiasis has little chance to spread out in the studied area.

Studies on the prevalence and laboratory transmission of fascioliasis in animals in the Kashmir Valley.

In Kashmir, 85.1% of cattle, 51.3% of sheep and 14.8% of goats were found infected with Fasciola spp. The prevalence rate varied from 66.6 to 100.0%, 25.0 to 100% and nil to 66.0% in cattle, sheep and goats respectively in different months of the year. Fasciola gigantica was the predominant species in all animal species but sheep harboured both F. gigantica and F. hepatica. The prevalence of F. hepatica infection in sheep happens to be the first report from India. Lymnaea auricularia sensu stricto supported the development of F. gigantica under laboratory conditions. The incubation temperature

Commercial watercress as an emerging source of fascioliasis in Northern France in 2002: results from an outbreak investigation.

In April 2002, five cases of fascioliasis were diagnosed in Tourcoing. A case-finding and a case-control study were carried out to identify the source of the outbreak and take appropriate control measures. Eighteen cases were identified through the medical laboratories carrying out serology for fascioliasis. Fourteen cases and 23 controls, identified by the physicians of the cases, were interviewed on symptoms of the disease and their consumption of uncooked plants. Cases were more likely than controls to have eaten commercialized raw watercress (OR 86.7, P < 0.001) and 13 (93%) of the cases r

Pharmaceutical-induced behavioural changes in freshwater species and mesocosm insights into potential population-level consequences.

Pharmaceutical contamination in aquatic environments, particularly from neuroactive drugs like antidepressants, potentially affects the behaviour of non-target organisms due to their effects on conserved neuroendocrine systems. Behavioural endpoints are increasingly investigated for risk assessment. However, their use in regulatory decision-making depends on their relevance to consequences at the population level. This research aims to bridge the gap between behavioural effects and their implications for species' populations. We investigated the effects of long-term exposure to environmentally

Intermediate host recognition abilities of Fasciola hepatica miracidia.

BACKGROUND: Fasciola hepatica, the causative agent of fascioliasis in sheep and cattle, requires a compatible snail intermediate host to complete its life cycle. The aquatic larval stage of this parasite is well-adapted for host-finding, with chemotactic abilities that enable it to sense potential host biomolecules. The extent of intermediate host recognition, particularly at the species level, and the downstream correlation with successful attachment has not been explored. This study investigated the ability of F. hepatica miracidia to distinguish between native and invasive host and non-host

Detection and genetic distance of resistant populations of Pseudosuccinea columella (Mollusca: Lymnaeidae) to Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda: Digenea) using RAPD markers.

Twelve natural populations of Pseudosuccinea columella snails, sampled in the western and central regions of Cuba, were analyzed using the RAPD-PCR technique to screen for resistance to Fasciola hepatica. Ten OPA primers previously shown to produce marker bands for resistance and susceptibility were tested. A new population of P. columella (El Azufre, Pinar del Río) exhibited the amplification patterns of resistant snails, and its resistant status was confirmed after experimental exposure to miracidia. No genetic variability was detected across or within the susceptible isolates. Similarly, th

In vitro phytotherapy of vector snails by binary combinations of larvicidal active components in effective control of fascioliasis.

A food-borne trematode infection fascioliasis is one among common public health problems worldwide. It caused a great economic loss for the human race. Control of snail population below a certain threshold level is one of the important methods in the campaign to reduce the incidence of fascioliasis. The life cycle of the parasite can be interrupted by killing the snail or Fasciola larva redia and cercaria inside of the snail Lymnaea acuminata. In vitro toxicity of different binary combinations (1:1 ratio) of plant-derived larvicidal active components such as citral, ferulic acid, umbelliferone

[Seasonal variations of Fasciola hepatica infection in goats in the area of Haouz (Morocco)].

The prevalence and level of infection with Fasciola hepatica were assessed monthly over a 12-month period in goats slaughtered in the Haouz area, in correlation with the dynamics of Lymnaea truncatula populations. The infection rate was high in winter (23.8%) in January), and summer (17.1% in August), and relatively low in spring and at the beginning of autumn. The infected animals had a fluke burden range of 1-48; a mean of 13 was recorded in July. Lymnaeid snails were observed in their habitat throughout the year, but were more abundant during the hot months (July and August). Snails infecte
