Magnetoencephalography and positron emission tomography studies of a patient with auditory agnosia caused by bilateral lesions confined to the auditory radiations.

The aim of this study was to investigate auditory cortex function in the context of auditory stimuli in a patient with auditory agnosia due to bilateral lesions confined to the auditory radiations. A male patient experienced mild left temporal hemiplegia because of right putaminal hemorrhage at the age of 43 years. Thereafter he recovered completely but hypertension persisted. When he was 53 years old, he suffered left putaminal hemorrhage and went into a coma. After recovering from the coma and right hemiplegia he could hear but could not discriminate speech sounds. Brain CT and MRI demonstra

Visualization of the corticospinal tract pathway using magnetic resonance axonography and magnetoencephalography for stereotactic irradiation planning of arteriovenous malformations.

Corticospinal tract (CST) information using anisotropic diffusion-weighted imaging and magnetoencephalography were integrated into radiosurgical planning for two patients with deeply seated arteriovenous malformation. The volume of CST receiving >10 Gy, >15 Gy, and maximum dose of CST could be reduced when plans were created with the aid of CST information compared with plans without the information. The results indicate that the use of CST information might reduce the risk of post-radiosurgical motor disturbance resulting from radiation necrosis.

Auditory cortical responses evoked by pure tones in healthy and sensorineural hearing loss subjects: functional MRI and magnetoencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Blood oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography are new techniques of brain functional imaging which can provide the information of excitation of neurons by measure the changes of hemodynamics and electrophysiological data of local brain tissue. The purpose of this study was to study functional brain areas evoked by pure tones in healthy and sensorineural hearing loss subjects with these techniques and to compare the differences between the two groups. METHODS: Thirty healthy and 30 sensorineural hearing loss subjects were inclu

Alpha event-related synchronization after eye closing differs in Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies: a magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: The electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities found in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are conflicting. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography, which has higher spatial resolution than electroencephalography, to explore neurophysiological features of DLB that may aid in the differential diagnosis. METHODS: Six patients with DLB, 11 patients with Alzheimer's disease, and 11 age-matched normal subjects were recruited. We investigated alterations in the ratio of event-related synchronization (ERS) in the alpha band after eye-closing. RESULTS: Although the avera

Soldiers With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder See a World Full of Threat: Magnetoencephalography Reveals Enhanced Tuning to Combat-Related Cues.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is linked to elevated arousal and alterations in cognitive processes. Yet, whether a traumatic experience is linked to neural and behavioral differences in selective attentional tuning to traumatic stimuli is not known. The present study examined selective awareness of threat stimuli and underlying temporal-spatial patterns of brain activation associated with PTSD. METHODS: Participants were 44 soldiers from the Canadian Armed Forces, 22 with PTSD and 22 without. All completed neuropsychological tests and clinical assessments. Magnetoencephalog

Focal electroencephalography abnormality in the early stage of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease corresponding to neuroradiological findings: A magnetoencephalography experience.

This study discusses the first electroencephalography (EEG) findings in two patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Case 1 involved a 71-year-old male who presented with progressive clumsiness of the right hand. An EEG performed 3 weeks after symptom onset revealed small periodic spikes over the left centroparietal region. MEG identified the spike source in the left parietal lobe, which subsequently exhibited glucose hypometabolism on positron emission tomography. Case 2 involved a 48-year-old male with progressive clumsiness and numbness in

Lateralization of delta band power in magnetoencephalography (MEG) in patients with unilateral focal epilepsy and its relation to verbal fluency.

INTRODUCTION: Delta power is a clinically established biomarker for abnormal brain processes. However, in patients with unilateral focal epilepsy (FE) it is still not well understood, how it relates to the epileptogenic zone and to neurocognitive functioning. The aim of the present study was thus to assess how delta power relates to the affected hemisphere, whether lateralization strength differs between the patients, and how changes in delta power correlate with cognitive functioning. METHOD: We retrospectively studied patients with left (LFE) and right FE (RFE) who had undergone a resting-s

Sex Differences in Magnetoencephalography-Identified Functional Connectivity in the Human Connectome Project Connectomics of Brain Aging and Dementia Cohort.

Introduction: The human brain shows modest traits of sexual dimorphism, with the female brain, on average, 10% smaller than the male brain. These differences do not imply a lowered cognitive performance, but suggest a more optimal brain organization in women. Here we evaluate the patterns of functional connectivity (FC) in women and men from the Connectomics of Brain Aging and Dementia sample. Methods: We used phase locking values to calculate FC from the magnetoencephalography time series in a sample of 138 old adults (87 females and 51 males). We compared the FC patterns between sexes, with

Individual pain sensitivity is associated with resting-state cortical activities in healthy individuals but not in patients with migraine: a magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Pain sensitivity may determine the risk, severity, prognosis, and efficacy of treatment of clinical pain. Magnetic resonance imaging studies have linked thermal pain sensitivity to changes in brain structure. However, the neural correlates of mechanical pain sensitivity remain to be clarified through investigation of direct neural activities on the resting-state cortical oscillation and synchrony. METHODS: We recorded the resting-state magnetoencephalographic (MEG) activities of 27 healthy individuals and 30 patients with episodic migraine (EM) and analyzed the source-based oscill

Does IQ affect the functional brain network involved in pseudoword reading in students with reading disability? A magnetoencephalography study.

The study examined whether individual differences in performance and verbal IQ affect the profiles of reading-related regional brain activation in 127 students experiencing reading difficulties and typical readers. Using magnetoencephalography in a pseudoword read-aloud task, we compared brain activation profiles of students experiencing word-level reading difficulties who did (n = 29) or did not (n = 36) meet the IQ-reading achievement discrepancy criterion. Typical readers assigned to a lower-IQ (n = 18) or a higher IQ (n = 44) subgroup served as controls. Minimum norm estimates of regional

Time course of focal slow wave activity in transient ischemic attacks and transient global amnesia as measured by magnetoencephalography.

In this longitudinal study multichannel MEG was used to localize and to quantify focal pathological spontaneous neuromagnetic activity in six patients with transient ischemic attacks (TIA) and two patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). Slow (2-6 Hz) and beta (14-30 Hz) activity were monitored up to 10 weeks. Results were compared with normative data, and changes over time were statistically analyzed. MEG detected pathological activity that persisted clinical symptoms. Focal slow activity originating from sensorimotor (TIA) and mesiotemporal (TGA) cortices exceeded normal values up to 14

Combined three-dimensional anisotropy contrast imaging and magnetoencephalography guidance to preserve visual function in a patient with an occipital lobe tumor.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional anisotropy contrast (3-DAC) magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography (MEG) of visually evoked magnetic fields (VEFs) were used to accurately localize the optic radiation and primary visual cortex before surgery for an occipital tumor. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 26-year-old male presented with an occipital lobe tumor located intrinsically underneath the right calcarine fissure. 3-DAC imaging showed that the right optic radiation was located along the superior and lateral surfaces of the lesion. Mapping of the VEFs demonstrated that the primary visual corte

Reduced parietal alpha power and psychotic symptoms: Test-retest reliability of resting-state magnetoencephalography in schizophrenia and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased reporting of resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG), reliability of those measures remains scarce and predominately reported in healthy controls (HC). As such, there is limited knowledge on MEG resting-state reliability in schizophrenia (SZ). METHODS: To address test-retest reliability in psychosis, a reproducibility study of 26 participants (13-SZ, 13-HC) was performed. We collected eyes open and eyes closed resting-state data during 4 separate instances (2 Visits, 2 runs per visit) to estimate spectral power reliability (power, normalized power, alpha react

Atypical coupling between posterior regions of the default mode network in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a pharmaco-magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction in the default mode network (DMN), a group of cortical areas more active during the resting state, has been linked to attentional deficits and symptoms associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prior imaging studies have shown decreased functional connectivity between DMN nodes in patients with ADHD, primarily between anterior and posterior regions. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we evaluated phase coherence (i.e., functional connectivity) among regions of the DMN in healthy controls and adults with ADHD before and after stimulant therapy. A Synergistic Examination of Excitatory-Inhibitory Balance in First-Episode Schizophrenia Merging 7-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging and Magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: Excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) imbalance is a proposed neural disruption in schizophrenia supported by magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) evidence of altered gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) levels. However, there exists a paucity of data linking these abnormalities to impaired in vivo brain function putatively reflecting E/I imbalance. Here, associations between GABA/Glu and the evoked early auditory gamma-band response (EAGBR) were examined in first-episode schizophrenia (FESz). METHODS: Twelve FESz underwent resting-state 7T-MRSI and magnetoencepha
