Gallbladder malakoplakia in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a rare entity.

Gallbladder malakoplakia in type 2 diabetes mellitus is a rare condition. Differentiating malakoplakia, which is a more aggressive disease condition with possible genetic abnormality from a more benign but closely related condition such as xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, is of prognostic importance in postoperative patient management and follow-up.

Bilateral renal malakoplakia with acute renal failure: a case report and literature review.

Malakoplakia involving the genitourinary tract is a rare inflammatory disorder that presents a diagnostic challenge. Renal parenchymal involvement is particularly uncommon. We report a case of bilateral renal malakoplakia that presented with acute renal failure and simulated xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP). The etiology, clinical course, and management of malakoplakia are reviewed, emphasizing the distinct characteristics of the disease that lead to its accurate diagnosis.

Malakoplakia. Defect in digestion of phagocytized material due to impaired vacuolar acidification?

On the basis of light and electron microscopical findings in a case of malakoplakia of urinary bladder, (1) we concur with others that malakoplakia is a hyperplastic accumulation of histiocytes, and that the formation of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies is associated with incomplete digestion of phagocytized cell debris; (2) we hypothesize that digestion within phagolysosomes is impaired because of deficient acidification; and (3) we suggest that the defect in acidification in some cases may be related to treatment with drugs that affect the mechanism of phagocytic vacuolar acidification.

Pulmonary malakoplakia diagnosed by fine needle aspiration. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary malakoplakia is an uncommon disorder, with 24 previously reported cases, only 4 of which were diagnosed by bronchial washings, bronchial brushings or aspiration cytology. We report a case that was diagnosed initially by computed tomography (CT)-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. CASE: A 56-year-old male with follicular small cleaved cell lymphoma had a 10-cm left lower lobe mass compressing the main bronchus to that lobe. A transthoracic, CT-guided FNA specimen consisted predominantly of foamy macrophages, many of which contained typical Michaelis-Gutmann bodi

Sex cord-stromal (gonadal stromal) tumors of the testis: a report of 5 cases.

Sex cord-stromal (gonadal stromal) tumors of the testis account for less than 4 per cent of the testicular tumors. The Leydig cell tumor in a child may produce isosexual virilization (case 3). In the adult it may have no endocrine manifestation (case 1) or gynecomastia and decrease in libidio may result from production of estrogens (case 2). Sertoli cell tumors (case 4) and granulosa cell tumors (case5) are rare.

Renal malakolpkia followed by chronic myelogenous leukaemia: treatment challenges case report and literature review.

Malakoplakia is a rare granulomatous disorder of unknown aetiology and usually affects patients with underlying immunosuppression. This disorder usually involves the genitourinary tract but has been reported in a wide array of anatomical sites. We are presenting, what is to our knowledge, the first case in the literature in which a patient was diagnosed with malakoplakia and after his successful management; he was diagnosed with chronic meylomoncytic leukaemia. All cases of malakoplakia reported in the literature were either preceded or accompanied by an immunosuppressive state.

Malakoplakia as a cause of severe hypercalcemia through ectopic 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 1-alpha-hydroxylase expression: A case report.

RATIONALE: Malakoplakia is a rare disease characterized by the presence of nongranulomatous macrophage infiltration. In most cases, it affects the urinary tract. Malakoplakia can cause acute kidney injury when it is localized in the kidneys. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we report the case of a 65-year-old female patient with renal malakoplakia responsible for hypercalcemia. During her initial assessment, she was also diagnosed 25-OH vitamin D insufficiency, for which she was prescribed oral cholecalciferol. Three months later, she developed severe hypercalcemia with normal 25-OH vitamin D and para

[Manifestation of malakoplakia in a urethral diverticulum in a female patient].

We report about a rare case of malakoplakia in a female urethral diverticulum. A 25-year-old patient with a long history of recurrent urinary tract infections and a plum-sized, painful swelling on the vaginal roof presented for operative treatment. In the anamnesis the patient reported about two spontaneous perforations, emptying several millilitres of pus each time. After total operative excision using a vaginal approach the histology showed malakoplakia in a urethral diverticulum. We found the typical intracytoplasmatic "Michaelis-Gutmann bodies" as well as "von Hansemann cells". Postoperati

Malakoplakia of the pancreas with diffuse lymph-node involvement.

We report a case of malakoplakia involving the pancreas in a 74-year-old man with associated regional lymphoadenopathy. Histological examination of both pancreas and lymph nodes revealed a diffuse histiocytic infiltrate containing numerous Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Electron microscopy supported the diagnosis of malakoplakia and showed bacterial-like structures. Differential diagnosis includes myofibroblastic inflammatory tumor and histiocytic neoplasms. Lymph-node involvement during malakoplakia is extremely rare and it has never been documented microscopically. Lymphohematogenous spread of ba

Gastrointestinal Malakoplakia: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 26 Cases.

Malakoplakia is an inflammatory process related to defective macrophage response to bacterial infection. To further characterize the clinicopathologic manifestations of gastrointestinal malakoplakia, 26 cases were identified from 6 institutions. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides and available stains were reviewed, and pertinent clinicopathologic features analyzed. Sixteen patients were women (62%). Mean patient age was 64 (range: 24 to 83). Sites included the colorectum (n=23), appendix (n=1), and stomach (n=2). Clinical indications for tissue procurement included screening (n=14), tumor re

Perianal cutaneous malakoplakia in an immunocompetent patient.

Malakoplakia is an uncommon inflammatory condition usually affecting the genitourinary tract, which has been associated with infections, tumors, and immunocompromised states. The condition has been reported in many different organs and it may rarely involve the skin. We describe a case of an isolated perianal cutaneous malakoplakia in an immunocompetent 23-year-old Syrian male.

Malakoplakia of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses mimicking a mucocele.

Malakoplakia is a rare, chronic inflammatory condition characterized by defective macrophage function. The majority of cases involve the genitourinary tract, but isolated cases have been reported from other organ systems including one prior report involving the maxillary sinus. We present a case of malakoplakia expanding the frontal and ethmoid sinuses mimicking a mucocele at presentation. The diagnosis was made at the time of surgery based on the histopathologic finding of von Hasemann cells and Michaelis-Guttmann bodies. Sinus-specific clinical aspects will be discussed including diagnostic

Malakoplakia. Two unusual cases which presented diagnostic problems.

Two unusual cases of malakoplakia are presented. Both cases occurred outside the urinary tract (retroperitoneum and anus) and were diagnostic problems due to the paucity of Michaelis-Guttman bodies. One case mimicked a retroperitoneal malignant fibrous histiocytoma and the other a common perianal abcess.

Pleural malakoplakia caused by Rhodococcus equi infection in a patient after stem cell transplantation.

Malakoplakia is a disease especially of the urinary tract with typical plaques most frequently observed in the urinary bladder's mucosa. In the context of immunosuppression malakoplakia can also occur in other organs. Some of these extravesical malakoplakias are associated with an infection by Rhodococcus equi, a rare human pathogen well known from veterinary medicine. Here we present the first case of a pleural malakoplakia without lung involvement caused by a proved Rhodococcus equi infection.

Macrophage-related diseases of the gut: a pathologist's perspective.

The resident macrophages of the gastrointestinal tract represent the largest population of macrophages in the human body and are usually located in the subepithelial lamina propria. This strategic location guarantees a first-line defense to the huge numbers of potentially harmful bacteria and antigenic stimuli that are present in the intestinal lumen. In non-inflamed mucosa, macrophages phagocytose and kill microbes in the absence of an inflammatory response. However, in the event of an epithelial breach and/or microbial invasion, new circulating monocytes and lymphocytes will be recruited to

Testicular malakoplakia in a middle-aged Han Chinese male: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Testicular malakoplakia (MP) is an extremely rare chronic granulomatous inflammatory lesion. It lacks specific clinical or imaging features and is highly prone to misdiagnosis as a testicular tumor. To our knowledge, no reports have described the contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) manifestations of this condition. Herein, we present a case with the aim of improving the understanding of testicular MP and reducing unnecessary misdiagnosis and oversight. PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old Han Chinese male presented with unexplained right scrotal swelling for more than 20 days, acco

Malakoplakia of the caecum in a kidney-transplant recipient: presentation as acute tumoral perforation and fatal outcome.

Malakoplakia is a rare pseudotumoral inflammatory disease known to affect immunocompromised subjects, mainly with a history of recurrent Escherichia coli infection. The urinary tract is the most frequent site of the disease, although all organs can be involved. In the present article, we report a case of malakoplakia of the caecum, that developed in a 52-year-old man, who had received a kidney transplant 9 years before and had a history of recurrent E. coli urinary tract infections. Malakoplakia presented as acute intestinal perforation, and, despite aggressive surgical and medical management,
