Rough weather conditions in the subarctic areas of Norway may influence on the risk of wrist fracture. We implemented data from the Norwegian System of Patient Injury Compensation (NPE). All claims due to wrist surgery, performed at the public hospitals in Northern Norway, during 2005-2014 were analyzed. We employed the ICD-10 classification codes S52.5 (fracture of distal end of radius) and S52.6 (fracture of distal end of radius and ulna). Treatment was defined by NCSP codes. 84 patients (0.3%) complained. Females complained four times more often than males did (P = 0.005) and received five

BACKGROUND: Interest in medical malpractice and areas of medicolegal vulnerability for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists has grown substantially, and many providers report changing surgical practice out of fear of litigation. Furthermore, education on medical malpractice and risk management is lacking for obstetrics and gynecology trainees. Recent obstetric and gynecologic malpractice claims data are lacking. We report on recent trends in malpractice claims for obstetrics and gynecology procedures, and compare these trends to those of other medical specialties.
OBJECTIVE: We sought t…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to report the prevalence and nature of malpractice litigation involving radiology over a 20-year period and to identify trends among types of lawsuits filed. By recognizing where medicolegal risks lie in radiology, risk-management processes can be developed to minimize malpractice exposure and to improve patient care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all malpractice lawsuits (18,860) filed against physicians in the greater Chicago area between January 1, 1975, and December 31, 1994. About twelve percent (2219) involved radi…

BACKGROUND: In the ambulatory setting, missed cancer diagnoses are leading contributors to patient harm and malpractice risk; however, there are limited data on the malpractice case characteristics for these cases.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine key features and factors identified in missed cancer diagnosis malpractice claims filed related to primary care and evaluate predictors of clinical and claim outcomes.
METHODS: We analyzed 2155 diagnostic error closed malpractice claims in outpatient general medicine. We created multivariate models to determine factors that predicted…

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A retrospective review of malpractice lawsuits after ACL reconstruction was performed using VerdictSearch, a large legal claims database encompassing nearly 180,000 legal cases, from February 1988 to May 2015. Settlement rates and ph…

BACKGROUND: A total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful and reliable operation with few complications. These complications however, do form a potential source for compensation claims. In the Netherlands, there are no studies available concerning filed claims after THA. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of claims related to THAs in the Netherlands and the reasons to claim, which claims lead to compensation, the costs involved for the insurer, and the demographics of the claimants.
METHODS: In this observational study, we analyzed all closed claims from 2000 to 2012 from t

A total number of 171 insurance claims were analyzed and classified by cause as due to: 1) misidiagnosis; 2) alleged malpractice when performing the examination; 3) missed referral to other diagnostic/therapeutic procedures; 4) iatrogenic lesions by ionizing/nonionizing radi…

OBJECTIVE: Our purposes were to determine the causes of malpractice claims against radiologists performing contrast examinations of the colon and to design strategies to reduce litigation and diminish patient morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reports of malpractice claims were collected from legal journals and databases between 1985 and 1994. For this period, 38 plaintiffs raised 52 allegations of malpractice that involved radiologists performing barium or Hypaque (meglumine diatrizoate; Winthrop Pharmaceuticals, New York, NY) colon examinations. For the 38 cases, 18 plaintiffs for decedents …

To determine objectively the patient and physician factors that lead to breast cancer malpractice litigation, a review was undertaken of all cases tried in the US federal and state civil court system over a 20-year period from 1971 through 1990. Forty-five cases were identified and all involved a delayed diagnosis of breast cancer (the mean delay was 15 months). The patients were young (mean age, 40 years). Of 45 cases studied, the majority of patients (37 [82%]) found a painless mass by self-examination of the breast. Only 22 patients (49%) had further workup, mostly by mammography (20 [44%])…
