Public health nurses' views on voluntary smallpox vaccination.

Between January and June 2003, voluntary smallpox vaccination of healthcare workers and mandatory vaccination of military personnel was an important public health topic. This paper discusses the attitudes of nurses from two county public health departments in an upper-Midwestern state who were asked to volunteer to take the smallpox vaccine and to prepare to assist in the operation of possible mass immunization clinics. The responses of these healthcare professionals are compared to those of physicians and the general public. The public health nurses in this sample were less likely to view sma

A Dynamic Compartmental Model to Explore the Optimal Strategy of Varicella Vaccination: An Epidemiological Study in Jiangsu Province, China.

Varicella (chickenpox) is highly contagious among children and frequently breaks out in schools. In this study, we developed a dynamic compartment model to explore the optimal schedule for varicella vaccination in Jiangsu Province, China. A susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model was proposed to simulate the transmission of varicella in different age groups. The basic reproduction number was computed by the kinetic model, and the impact of three prevention factors was assessed through the global sensitivity analysis. Finally, the effect of various vaccination scenarios was qualitatively eva

[Contemporary status of BCG vaccine in the world and in Serbia].

During the second half of the 20th century, due to anti-tuberculosis activities including BCG vaccination, the number of patients affected by tuberculosis was constantly declining in Serbia and in the majority of European countries. Nowadays Serbia and Montenegro (S&M) is a country with a moderate incidence of TB stable during the last 10 years and with potential risk of worsening of the epidemiological situation. The increase of newly diagnosed cases in 2002 has already been notified. The coverage of newborns with the BCG vaccination, still mandatory in S&M, is 96% on average, and depends on

Hesitancy towards COVID-19 Vaccination among Healthcare Workers: A Multi-Centric Survey in France.

Vaccination programs against COVID-19 are being scaled up. We aimed to assess the effects of vaccine characteristics on vaccine hesitancy among healthcare workers in a multi-center survey conducted within French healthcare facilities from 1 December 2020 to 26 March 2021. We invited any healthcare workers naïve of COVID-19 vaccination to complete an online self-questionnaire. They reported on their socio-demographic characteristics, as well as their perception and beliefs towards vaccination. We measured their willingness to get vaccinated in eight scenarios for candidates' vaccines presented

History of vaccine and immunization: Vaccine-hesitancy discussion in Germany in XIX century.

Vaccination is the most celebrated and denigrated achievement of medicine and public health - not only today, but since Edward Jenner's time (1798). In fact, the idea of injecting a mild form of "disease" into a healthy person was attacked even earlier than the discovery of vaccines. The forerunner of Jenner's vaccination with bovine lymph was the inoculation of smallpox material from person to person, which, known in Europe since the beginning of the eighteenth century, was a target of harsh criticism. The reasons for criticizing the Jennerian vaccination and its mandatory practice were medic

Knowledge of maternity caregivers on vaccination BCG recommendations and circuits.

INTRODUCTION: In France, 4866 cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2023, of which 5.3% involved children. The pediatric population is at higher risk of developing severe forms (miliary or meningeal tuberculosis). The BCG vaccine is effective in protecting young children against these severe forms. It is recommended for a targeted pediatric population, but vaccine coverage remains insufficient. Early prevention through identifying eligible newborns in maternity care could help improve vaccination coverage among high-risk populations. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed caregivers' knowledge of BC

The Anthrax Vaccine Program: an analysis of the CDC's recommendations for vaccine use.

The anthrax vaccine was never proved to be safe and effective. It is one cause of Gulf War illnesses, and recent vaccinees report symptoms resembling Gulf War illnesses. The vaccine's production has been substandard. Without adequate evaluation, the Food and Drug Administration recently approved (retrospectively) significant changes made to the vaccine's composition since 1990. The vaccine's mandatory use for inhalation anthrax is "off-label." A skewed review of the vaccine literature by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) led to remunerative collaborative research with the ar

The evolution of vaccines for early childhood: the MMRV.

Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccines have greatly reduced the incidence of these four childhood diseases, which in the past caused a considerable burden of morbidity and lethality to the population. Vaccines against MMR, varicella and a tetravalent MMRV vaccine are currently available on the market to provide immunization against measles-mumps-rubella and varicella. A recently passed Italian Law (L 119/2017) on vaccinations increased the number of free of charge but compulsory vaccinations from four to ten, including MMR and varicella, as a requirement for admission to nursery school

[Effect of High Council for Public Health on September 28th 2012 recommendation about antipapillomavirus vaccination on antipapillomavirus and trivalent or tetravalent DTP or DTCP co-vaccination in South Western France].

INTRODUCTION: Antipapillomavirus vaccination is used to prevent genital infection by papilloma virus, responsible for a high morbidity. In France, the High Council for Public Health published on September 28th 2012 a new guideline decreasing the age of vaccination from 16 to between 11 to 14 allowing a joint vaccination with mandatory tetravalent or trivalent (against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and poliomyelitis Tdap-IPV or Td/IPV booster) vaccination. Our study aimed to assess if this guideline changed the rate of joint vaccinations. METHODS: A descriptive before/after study was conducte

Vaccine-Related Autoimmune Hepatitis: Emerging Association with SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination or Coincidence?

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing number of liver injury cases resembling autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination; however, an association has not yet been established. METHODS/MATERIALS: A literature review was performed to identify articles regarding the association of AIH with vaccination, emphasizing on SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, and the proposed mechanisms. We then performed a literature search for AIH-like cases following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and we evaluated the included cases for AIH diagnosis using simplified diagnostic criteria (SDC), and for vaccination causality
