In the pathogenesis of pneumonic pasteurellosis, there is an abrupt commensal to pathogen shift from a predominance of P. haemolytica serotype 2 (ST2) to serotype 1 (ST1) in the bovine upper respiratory tract (URT) microfloral population. This occurs following periods of stress associated with development of this disease. Data are reviewed from recent publications supporting the contention that surface-expressed ST1-specific factor(s) could be critical in mediating URT adhesion and colonization. Such factors may promote an increase in the number of ST1 organisms deposited through infective dro

The aim of this study was to compare the changes in the oral flora of Sprague-Dawley rats before intraperitoneal injection of zoledronic acid, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after injection. Clinically, some antibiotics effectively treat patients with medicine-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ), but the effect of broad-spectrum antibiotics for osteomyelitis of the jaw is not obvious. We therefore speculated that MRONJ may have some dominant bacteria. We used 12 healthy rats for the experiment. One rat was used for haematoxylin and eosin staining, three were used for gene analysis, three for signa

Challenges in sample collection have contributed to the limited use of diagnostic testing in bovine respiratory disease (BRD) management. Short nasal swabs (SNS) offer a practical and cost-effective alternative to deep nasopharyngeal swabs (DNPS) for sampling the upper respiratory tract, but gaps remain in understanding the efficacy of SNS for detecting clinically relevant bacteria and associated antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) compared to DNPS. This study compared detection of BRD-associated bacteria and ARGs between SNS and DNPS samples collected from 207 fall-placed calves at a resear

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial bronchopneumonia occurs in mature dairy cows but much of the information is extrapolated from knowledge of the disease in calves. The study was prompted by perceptions of an increasing occurrence and a paucity of information on fatal Mannheimia haemolytica pneumonia in dairy cows in Ontario. The study objectives were to describe the seasonality, main pathogens involved, and suggested predisposing factors for cases of fatal bacterial bronchopneumonia in mature dairy cows submitted for postmortem examination to a diagnostic laboratory, and to evaluate if the frequency of suc

Pneumonic pasteurellosis is a highly significant infectious disease globally, posing a major economic threat to small ruminants (SR) in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Although antibiotics have been effective in treating this disease, farmers in remote areas of Ethiopia often prefer traditional herbal medicines to manage respiratory infections in SR. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of crude extracts from three selected medicinal plants-Nicotiana tabacum, Psidium guajava, and Solanum incanum-against respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannh

Natural transference of maternal microbes to the neonate, especially at birth via the vaginal canal, has recently been recognized in humans and cows; however, its microbial influence on calf health has not yet been documented. We compared the bacterial communities in vaginal and fecal samples from 81 pregnant dairy cows versus those in nasopharyngeal and fecal samples collected at 3, 14 and 35 days of life from their respective progeny. The microbiota of the calf upper respiratory tract (URT), regardless of calf age, was found to be highly similar to the maternal vaginal microbiota. Calf fecal

Bovine respiratory diseases are a seasonally highly prevalent infectious condition and cause great economic losses to the farming industry. In order to expand the genomic database information of bovine respiratory disease pathogens, the raw data were assembled and genome annotated using relevant bioinformatics analysis software to clarify the strain virulence, resistance gene carriage, and evolution of bovine-origin Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, and Mycoplasma bovis. Whole genome sequencing of Pasteurella multocida (Pm1), Mannheimia haemolytica (Mh1), and Mycoplasma bovis (Mb1

BACKGROUND: Serum haptoglobin (Hp) and haptoglobin matrix metalloproteinase 9 complexes (Hp-MMP 9) have been identified as biomarkers with diagnostic potential in cattle with conditions resulting in an acute inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to evaluate potential diagnostic applications of serum Hp and Hp-MMP 9 concentrations in calves with BRD and establish a timeline for their detection in calves experimentally challenged with Bibersteinia trehalosi and Mannheimia haemolytica. Thirty-five cross bred dairy calves were inoculated via tracheal catheterization with either a PC

An in vivo model for studies of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) interactions of antimicrobials was developed. Tissue cages with a constant surface area but with different volumes were implanted in calves and infected with Mannheimia haemolytica. Penicillin was injected directly into the cages. With this procedure, different concentration-time profiles could be simulated so that the effect of a range of PK/PD indices on the infection could be monitored. The area under the curve to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time above MIC were equally predictive for effect, but Cmax to M

Lechiguana is a disease of cattle characterized by large, hard, subcutaneous swellings that grow rapidly and result in death after 3-11 months in untreated animals. Cattle treated with antibiotics recover. The disease has been reported from five states in south and southeastern Brazil. Histologically, the lesion consists of focal proliferation of fibrous tissue infiltrated by plasma cells, eosinophils, lymphocytes and sometimes neutrophils. The primary lesion is an eosinophilic lymphangitis, which results in eosinophilic abscesses, with occasional rosettes containing bacteria in their centres.

Novel bacterial taxonomy and nomenclature revisions can have significant impacts on clinical practice, disease epidemiology, and veterinary microbiology laboratory operations. Expansion of research on the microbiota of humans, animals, and insects has significant potential impacts on the taxonomy of organisms of clinical interest. Implications of taxonomic changes may be especially important when considering zoonotic diseases. Here, we address novel taxonomy and nomenclature revisions of veterinary significance. Noteworthy discussion centers around descriptions of novel mastitis pathogens in S

Sheep are a major livestock species in China, yet pneumonia-related mortality poses a significant obstacle to intensive farming. In this study, 115 sheep lung samples were collected and classified into different pneumonia severity groups based on lung lesion scoring. Subsequently, this study employed 16S rRNA sequencing to systematically investigate the structure and diversity of the pulmonary microbiota in sheep, including alpha diversity, beta diversity, and LEfSe analyses. Metagenomic techniques were also applied to analyze the abundance of metabolic pathways, exploring the associations bet

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a significant health concern in beef cattle production, leading to substantial economic losses. In North America, beef cattle are frequently transported over long distances for placement into feedlots. The respiratory microbiota of cattle, including pathogens, can change after feedlot entry. However, there is limited information on how bacteria are impacted when cattle are offloaded for a rest stop during transportation.
RESULTS: This study investigated the effects of a rest stop during transportation on the nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota of bee

Despite technological, biologic, and pharmacologic advances the bacterial component of the bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex continues to have a major adverse effect on the health and wellbeing of stocker and feeder cattle. Overlooked in this disappointing assessment is evaluation of the effects that working with younger, lighter-weight cattle have on managing the bacterial component of the BRD complex. Most problems associated with BRD come from cattle taken from and comingled with cattle operations that have inconsistent or nonexistent cattle health management. This article reviews th

Pasteur described an organism causing fowl cholera in 1880. In 134 years we have progressed from crude vaccines for Pasteurella, to some refined vaccines, to a name change (Mannheimia), to autogenous vaccines (back to crude). In the last 25-30 years, we have attempted to mitigate the problem of bovine respiratory disease with antimicrobials and subsequently have a high incidence of multi-drug resistance. All of these attempts have resulted in little if any improvement in morbidity/mortality. Is it time to focus on the animal's response or lack of response to infectious pressure? Instead of foc

BACKGROUND: We investigated the biomarkers, immune responses and cellular changes in vaccinated and non-vaccinated goats experimentally challenged with M. haemolytica serotype A2 under rainy and hot tropical conditions. A total of twenty-four clinically healthy, non-pregnant, female goats randomly allocated to 2 groups of 12 goats each were used for the study. The 12 goats in each season were subdivided into three groups (n = 4), which served as the control (G-NEG), non-vaccinated (G-POS), and vaccinated (G-VACC). In week-1, the G-VACC received 2 mL of alum-precipitated pasteurellosis vaccine

The mechanisms of interaction between phagocytes and different bacteria that help resolve lung infections or contribute to lung pathology are poorly defined. Alveolar phagocytes (resident macrophages and recruited neutrophils) make a major contribution to innate immunity by mounting a respiratory burst that helps kill internalised bacteria. However, this ability may be altered during or after exposure to infection. This review considers the application and limitations of a variety of analytical methods for oxygen-dependent mechanisms of respiratory burst in phagocytes initiated by soluble and

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) remains a significant health and economic problem to the dairy cattle industry. Multiple risk factors contribute to BRD susceptibility including the bacterial pathobionts Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, and Mycoplasma bovis. Studies have characterized and quantified the abundance of these bacteria in the nasal cavity of cattle to infer and help disease diagnosis; nonetheless, there is still discrepancy in the results observed of when these microbes are commensal or pathogenic. Additionally, some of these studies are

Bovine respiratory disese (BRD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortlaity in stocker cattle, a high-risk sector of the beef cattle industry, characterized by stress, commingling, and limited or unknown prior health management. Key bacterial pathogens, including Mannheimia haemolytica, Pateurella multocida, Histophilus somni, and Mycoplasmopsis bovis, act as opportunists when host defenses are compromised. These microbes employ diverse virulence mechanisms, including toxins, adhesins, surface proteins, and immune evasion strategies to colonize the lower respiratory tract and cause disease

The recognition of lesions of the mammary gland in small ruminants is a useful diagnostic procedure that can aid in the identification of several udder diseases. This article reviews the main pathological lesions in this organ in sheep and goats. Mastitis is, by far, the most commonly diagnosed change. Acute clinical mastitis is associated with bacterial infections, mainly Staphylococcus aureus or Mannheimia haemolytica. Lesions related to subclinical and chronic mastitis are also described, either as localized cases or as a part of systemic diseases such as contagious agalactia, maedi-visna o
