Physical, psychological, sexual, and systemic abuse of children with disabilities in East Africa: Mapping the evidence.

Children with disabilities (CWDs) are at a higher risk of being maltreated than are typical children. The evidence base on the abuse of children with disabilities living in low- and middle-income countries is extremely limited but the problem is particularly acute in East Africa. We don't know the types of evidence that exist on this topic. This problem is compounded by the fact that key indicators of disability, such as reliable prevalence rates, are not available currently. This paper addresses this serious problem by mapping the existing evidence-base to document the coverage, patterns, and

Terminal ulcers in end-of-life care: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In the final stage of life, the skin may fail, leading to the development of terminal ulcers. These ulcers are considered unavoidable, since they occur despite all pressure-relieving interventions being implemented and the best quality of care being provided. However, they are often misdiagnosed as pressure injuries, since healthcare professionals are not always adequately prepared for this topic. Thus, effective palliative care and palliative wound care is not provided and prevalence data is missed, despite it being considered a solid indicator of the quality of nursing care. Sinc

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase is a molecular vascular target for the Chinese herb Danshen in hypertension.

Danshen, a Chinese herb, reduces hypertension in Oriental medicine. We hypothesized that Danshen acts partially through endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) signaling mechanisms. We tested the hypothesis using tanshinone II(A), an active ingredient of Danshen, and the two-kidney, one-clip renovascular hypertension model in hamsters. Oral tanshinone (50 microg/100 g body wt) reduced mean arterial pressure (MAP) from 161.2 +/- 6.9 to 130.0 +/- 7.8 mmHg (mean +/- SE; P < 0.05) in hypertensive hamsters. MAP in sham-operated hamsters was 114.3 +/- 9.2 mmHg. Topical tanshinone at 1 microg/ml and

AIM: To explore ward-based registered nurses' emotions, emotion-driven behaviours, and the perceived impact of these emotions on caring for clinically deteriorating patients. BACKGROUND: Clinical deterioration in ward patients is frequently missed or poorly managed despite widespread implementation of Early Warning Score systems. Behavioural and systemic factors may contribute to these failures; however, emotional influences remain underexplored. DESIGN: Descriptive interview study underpinned by Affective Events Theory. METHODS: Registered nurses from a United Kingdom teaching hospital wit

Knowledge mapping of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in systemic lupus erythematosus: a bibliometric analysis (2004-2023).

BACKGROUND: Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are a specialized subset of dendritic cells known for their ability to produce type I interferon (IFN I), contributing to antiviral defense and the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In SLE patients, pDCs are excessively activated, leading to overproduction of IFN-α, which plays a critical role in disease progression. However, no bibliometric analysis has been conducted on the relationship between pDCs and SLE. This study aims to map the knowledge structure and trends in research on pDCs in SLE through bi

Blackberry extract inhibits UVB-induced oxidative damage and inflammation through MAP kinases and NF-κB signaling pathways in SKH-1 mice skin.

Extensive exposure of solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation to skin induces oxidative stress and inflammation that play a crucial role in the induction of skin cancer. Photochemoprevention with natural products represents a simple but very effective strategy for the management of cutaneous neoplasia. In this study, we investigated whether blackberry extract (BBE) reduces chronic inflammatory responses induced by UVB irradiation in SKH-1 hairless mice skin. Mice were exposed to UVB radiation (100 mJ/cm(2)) on alternate days for 10 weeks, and BBE (10% and 20%) was applied topically a day before UV

A Systematic Review of Areal Units and Adjacency Used in Bayesian Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Conditional Autoregressive Models in Health Research.

Advancements in Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal modelling have been observed in recent years. Despite this, there are unresolved issues about the choice of appropriate spatial unit and adjacency matrix in disease mapping. There is limited systematic review evidence on this topic. This review aimed to address these problems. We searched seven databases to find published articles on this topic. A modified quality assessment tool was used to assess the quality of studies. A total of 52 studies were included, of which 26 (50.0%) were on infectious diseases, 10 (19.2%) on chronic diseases, 8 (

Silencing of the Slt2-Type MAP Kinase Bmp3 in Botrytis cinerea by Application of Exogenous dsRNA Affects Fungal Growth and Virulence on Lactuca sativa.

Botrytis cinerea can attack over 500 genera of vascular plants and is considered the second phytopathogen in the 'top ten' for its economic importance. Traditional fungicides can be ineffective and with increasing fungicide resistance, new sustainable technologies are required. Lately, RNA interference-based fungicides are emerging for their potential uses in crop protection. Therefore, we assessed the potential of this innovative approach targeting the MAP kinase Bmp3 in B. cinerea, a gene involved in saprophytic growth, response to low osmolarity, conidiation, surface sensing, host penetrati

Women Who Trade Sexual Services from Men: A Systematic Mapping Review.

Most research on transactional sex frame men as buyers and females as sellers of sex. We conducted a systematic mapping review of the empirical research on transactional sex where women form the demand (buyer) and men the supply (seller). We included 46 studies, of which 25 explicitly researched women as buyers of sex from male sellers, and 21 studies where this topic was a subset of larger topics. The majority of research on women who trade sexual services from men is published in the last 15 years, by female researchers, using cross-sectional or qualitative/ethnographic design, and from the

Selecting, refining and identifying priority Cochrane Reviews in health communication and participation in partnership with consumers and other stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Priority-setting partnerships between researchers and stakeholders (meaning consumers, health professionals and health decision-makers) may improve research relevance and value. The Cochrane Consumers and Communication Group (CCCG) publishes systematic reviews in 'health communication and participation', which includes concepts such as shared decision-making, patient-centred care and health literacy. We aimed to select and refine priority topics for systematic reviews in health communication and participation, and use these to identify five priority CCCG Cochrane Reviews. METHODS:

The Break-Free Trajectory: Queer Topics in the Soviet Magazine Ogonek.

This article examines how queer topics were rendered unspeakable in the Soviet official public sphere through a case study of the magazine Ogonek (1923-1993). Drawing on Michel Foucault's conceptualization of silence as productive power, the study approaches it as a regime that authorizes specific ways of naming, framing, and feeling about prohibited subjects. Based on a corpus of Ogonek publications that mention queer topics, the analysis combines a quantitative mapping of keyword frequencies over time, an affective coding of emotional orientations, and a thematic discourse analysis of the do

A Large Language Model-Powered Map of Metabolomics Research.

We present a comprehensive map of the metabolomics research landscape, synthesizing insights from over 80,000 publications. Using PubMedBERT, we transformed abstracts into 768-dimensional embeddings that capture the nuanced thematic structure of the field. Dimensionality reduction with t-SNE revealed distinct clusters corresponding to key domains, such as analytical chemistry, plant biology, pharmacology, and clinical diagnostics. In addition, a neural topic modeling pipeline refined with GPT-4o mini reclassified the corpus into 20 distinct topics─ranging from "Plant Stress Response Mechanisms

Rudolf Nieuwenhuys (11 June 1927-4 November 2024): a scholarly life.

This collective eulogy by colleagues, co-authors and friends is a tribute to the work and life of Rudolf Nieuwenhuys. 'Neurofascination' is an apt label for his scholarly life in the sciences from the start in 1955 until his last days in 2024. In addition, he had a broad interest in Roman and Gothic architecture, the history and politics of the twentieth century, religion and the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Extensive discussions on one or more of these topics often led to long-lasting friendships, some of which inform the following pages. Rudolf is remembered for his highly didactical and

Impact of disease-associated chromatin accessibility QTLs across immune cell types and contexts.

Only one-third of immune-associated genome-wide association study (GWAS) loci colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs), leaving most mechanisms unresolved. To address this, we created a unified single-cell chromatin accessibility (scATAC) map of ∼280,000 peripheral immune cells from 48 individuals, including 20 COVID-19 patients. Topic modeling of scATAC data identified continuous cell states and revealed disease-relevant cellular contexts. We identified 37,390 chromatin accessibility QTLs (caQTLs) at 10% false discovery rate and observed extensive sharing of caQTLs, with <20

Episodic and electrical nervous system disorders caused by nonchannel genes.

As noted in the separate introduction to this special topic section, episodic and electrical disorders can appear quite different clinically and yet share many overlapping features, including attack precipitants, therapeutic responses, natural history, and the types of genes that cause many of the genetic forms (i.e., ion channel genes). Thus, as we mapped and attempted to clone genes causing other episodic disorders, ion channels were always outstanding candidates when they mapped to the critical region of linkage in such a family. However, some of these disorders do not result from mutations

Children's thoughts on the social exclusion of peers with intellectual or learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that children with intellectual or learning disabilities are at risk for social exclusion by their peers but little is known of children's views on this topic. In this study, we used concept mapping to investigate elementary school children's thoughts on why they believe their peers with intellectual or learning disabilities are sometimes socially excluded at school. METHOD: Participants were 49 grade five and six children who attended inclusive classrooms. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. We extracted 49 unique statements from the tr
