What does self-identified drug of choice tell us about individuals under community corrections supervision?

OBJECTIVES: The term "drug of choice" (DOC) refers to substance abusers' preferred drug and this information often adds to the clinical picture of the patient because substance users often meet diagnostic criteria for dependence on multiple drugs. Characteristics such as age, race, marital status, and psychiatric illnesses have been shown to differentiate among individuals with different DOC preferences. However, no studies have examined DOC in the context of criminal behavior and other drug dependencies. METHODS: The participants (N = 15,475) of a community corrections program, Treatment Alt

Functional MRI of inhibitory processing in abstinent adolescent marijuana users.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana intoxication appears to impair response inhibition, but it is unclear if impaired inhibition and associated brain abnormalities persist after prolonged abstinence among adolescent users. We hypothesized that brain activation during a go/no-go task would show persistent abnormalities in adolescent marijuana users after 28 days of abstinence. METHODS: Adolescents with (n = 16) and without (n = 17) histories of marijuana use were compared on blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response to a go/no-go task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) after 28 days of m

The importance of an illicit drug history in the evaluation of suspected spontaneous pneumothorax.

The authors present the case of a 27-year-old man who presented with acute left-sided pleuritic chest pain and dyspnoea managed as for a spontaneous pneumothorax with aspiration and subsequent chest drain insertion following a chest radiograph. Despite intervention, however, his chest radiograph showed what appeared to be a non-resolving pneumothorax. Further history revealed a large cannabis smoking exposure and subsequent CT imaging revealed large apical bullous disease with little residual pneumothorax. The patient was referred for cardiothoracic bullectomy and pleurodesis. The authors revi

Comorbidity between depressive symptoms and substance use in-patients hospitalized for non-psychiatric diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies have shown a high prevalence and concurrence between depression and substance use. This is known as "dual diagnosis" and is associated with a worse prognosis for patients. OBJECTIVE: To establish the comorbidity between depressive symptoms and substance abuse in patients admitted with acute or chronic diseases to a public hospital. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study of prevalence which included 296 patients aged 18-65, to whom the PHQ-9 and ASSIST 3.0 scales were applied to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and substance abuse. [Epidemiological status of drug abuse in Mexico].

As a country that produces marijuana and opium, and as a route for cocaine traffic to the United States of America, Mexico is experiencing serious social and health problems related to the trafficking, use, and abuse of these drugs and other dependency-producing substances. In 1988 a national survey of addiction was undertaken in which information was collected on the prevalence of the use of alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, opium, heroin, narcotic analgesics, sedatives, and tranquilizers. A sample was identified in the population between the ages of 12 and 65 li

Substance use and sexual risk behaviors among Mississippi public high school students.

This study describes the patterns of substance use and sexual risk behaviors and examines the relationships among a representative sample of Mississippi public high school students. Data were obtained from the 2009 Mississippi Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. We found 61% of the participants ever had sexual intercourse and 13.4% engaged in early sexual initiation (< or = 12 years). Nearly a quarter had four or more lifetime sexual partners. One-third did not use a condom during their last sexual intercourse. Two-thirds drank alcohol. Over one-th

Method comparison of EMIT 700 and EMIT II with RIA for drug screening.

The EMIT 700 and EMIT II assays for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, barbiturates, and phencyclidine, as performed on a Hitachi 717 Analyzer, were compared with Roche Abuscreen RIA tests for high-volume drug abuse screening. The EMIT II kits offer some advantages over the EMIT 700 kits for testing large work loads. The EMIT II marijuana test in particular exhibits a calibration curve that promises improved ability to separate negative from positive samples due to the increased absorbance rate separation between the negative and cutoff calibrators. Both EMIT formulations are preferable in terms of
