Global Influence of Cannabis Legalization on Social Media Discourse: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the third most consumed drug worldwide, with its use linked to a high number of substance use disorders, particularly among young men. Associated mortality causes include traffic accidents and cardiovascular diseases. The global expansion of cannabis legalization has sparked debates about its impact on risk perception, with risk perception decreasing in countries with permissive laws. Social media analysis, such as on Twitter (subsequently rebranded as X), is a useful tool for studying these perceptions and their variation by geographic region. OBJECTIVE: This study ai

Prevalence and correlates of substance use among school-going adolescents (11-18years) in eight Sub-Saharan Africa countries.

BACKGROUND: Substance use constitutes a major public health issue especially among adolescents as it has associated adverse behavioural, health, social and economic outcomes. However, there is a paucity of comprehensive evidence on the prevalence and associated factors of substance use (alcohol, marijuana and amphetamine) among school-going adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study examined the magnitude of substance use and its associated factors among school-going adolescents in eight eligible sub-Saharan Africa countries. METHODS: Data for the study were obtained from the Global

The long-term effects of school dropout and GED attainment on substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research suggests that 14% of the population do not complete high school, and dropout has been linked to mental health conditions, substance use, chronic health problems, and criminal behavior. Few studies have assessed whether attainment of the general education development (GED) credential is protective from substance use. PURPOSE: To assess the long-term outcomes of school dropout and GED attainment on past year substance use disorders, age of onset, and current smoking status. METHODS: Longitudinal data were included for lifetime substance users who participated

Urinary Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and metabolite concentrations following cannabis use: A systematic review.

Urine testing is used in a variety of contexts to identify cannabis use. Most tests target 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (11-COOH-THC), the terminal metabolite of Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal intoxicant in cannabis. Different authorities use different threshold concentrations to define a positive test. This systematic review synthesised the urinary THC and THC-metabolite concentrations reported in prior studies involving administration of cannabis/cannabis-based products (acute and repeated dosing) and users of such products (during use and extended abstinence). The

What are the policy implications of the evidence on cannabis and psychosis?

OBJECTIVE: To explore the implications for mental health services, for health education about the risks of cannabis use, and for public policy toward cannabis use of observational evidence that cannabis use is a contributory cause of psychosis. METHOD: Using comparative analyses of similar evidence for the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and amphetamine use, we considered the relation between observational evidence and action on cannabis. We examined arguments on the grounds of public health prudence for discouraging cannabis use by young individuals. With the assumption that the relatio

Respiratory effects of cocaine freebasing among habitual cocaine users.

Smoking of alkaloidal cocaine ("crack") has become increasingly prevalent in our society. Recent evidence suggests that crack smoking can cause acute respiratory symptoms, abnormalities in lung function and, in some instances, severe, life-threatening acute lung injury. To evaluate further the relationship between frequent cocaine smoking and respiratory symptoms and lung dysfunction, we studied a sample of 177 heavy, habitual smokers of freebase cocaine (mean 6.6 gm/wk for an average of 27 months) with or without concomitant smoking of tobacco and/or marijuana. Results in this sample were com

Cannabinoid receptor expression in peripheral arterial chemoreceptors during postnatal development.

Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke increases risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Marijuana is frequently smoked in conjunction with tobacco, and perinatal exposure to marijuana is associated with increased incidence of SIDS. Abnormalities in peripheral arterial chemoreceptor responses during sleep may be operative in infants at risk for SIDS, and nicotine exposure adversely affects peripheral arterial chemoreceptor responses. To determine whether marijuana could potentially affect the activity of peripheral arterial chemoreceptors during early postnatal development, we used in situ hy

The Impact of Marijuana Use on Postoperative Outcomes in Abdominal-based Free Flap Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing prevalence of marijuana use in the general population yet clinical studies on marijuana's effect on surgical outcomes remain limited. Marijuana's effect on wound healing, venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to endothelial inflammation, and bleeding due to inhibited platelet function have been cited based on animal models but have not been evaluated clinically in patients undergoing microsurgical reconstruction. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who underwent abdominal-based free flap breast reconstruction in a single institute fr

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor availability in cigarette smokers: effect of heavy caffeine or marijuana use.

RATIONALE: Upregulation of α4β2* nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) is one of the most well-established effects of chronic cigarette smoking on the brain. Prior research by our group gave a preliminary indication that cigarette smokers with concomitant use of caffeine or marijuana have altered nAChR availability. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if smokers with heavy caffeine or marijuana use have different levels of α4β2* nAChRs than smokers without these drug usages. METHODS: One hundred and one positron emission tomography (PET) scans, using the radiotracer 2-FA (a ligand for β2*

The relationship of substance use to sexual activity among young adults in the United States.

Data on substance use and sexual activity from a nationally representative, probability-based sample of young adults aged 18-30 in 1990 indicate that 86% of respondents had had sex in the previous 12 months, with three-fourths reporting no more than one sexual partner. Seventy-five percent of respondents had consumed alcohol in the past 12 months, 40% had smoked cigarettes and 20% had used marijuana. After adjustment for demographic factors, both sexual activity and a history of multiple partners were positively associated with some measures of substance use. Respondents who drank more frequen

Relationship Between Marijuana Use and Hospitalization for Acute Coronary Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recreational marijuana use is rising, especially among young adults. The cardiovascular (CVD) effect of marijuana remains mostly unknown. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 14,490 patients admitted to our hospital between 2012 and 2014 who had urine toxicology done for various reasons. Patients with a primary diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were queried in both the marijuana-positive group (n = 59) and the marijuana-negative group (n = 195). The risks of having ACS were compared in both groups. RESULTS: There was no difference in the risk of having ACS between t

Men's and women's patterns of substance use around pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about men's patterns of substance use around their partner's pregnancy, despite evidence from studies of pregnant women that men's substance use may reduce women's ability to desist from substance use during pregnancy, increase the probability that women will return to use postpartum, and increase the risk of adverse child outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the association between pregnancy or partner's pregnancy and month-by-month patterns of binge drinking, daily smoking, and marijuana use among young men and women. METHODS: Data were drawn from
