We present a case of a 58 years old man with a large heterogeneous and well circumscribed soft tissue mass arising from the right pleural surface, found at a computer tomography of his chest. This mass after complete resection through a right lateral open thoracotomy, proved to be a Solitary Fibrous Tumor, previously known as 'benign mesothelioma'. Computed tomography (CT) can establish the diagnosis of lipoid pneumonia in lung masses by detecting fat. In this case report, the diagnosis of lipoid pneumonia was first suggested by CT, supported by a long history of mineral oil ingestion, and confirmed by needle aspiration biopsy of the larger of two lung lesions and specific stains. In the future, the detection of fat in lung masses by CT will warrant intermittent follow-up by routine chest x-ray films. Needle aspiration biopsy or surgery would be needed only if a mass showed signs of growth.

Foreign body aspiration mostly presents as acute emergency with cough, choking and dyspnoea. Rarely aspiration of foreign body may be the underlying cause in patients presenting with long term symptomatologies. Here is a case of 60-year-old male who came for surgical management of cholelithiasis. During his workup, X-ray chest revealed right paracardiac opacity. Fibre-optic bronchoscopy showed a mass lesion in right main bronchus. It was taken out of the airways by flexible bronchoscope but could not be retrieved. Subsequent chest radiographs showed marked improvement.

We report a rare case of rhabdomyosarcoma spontaneously arising in an anterior mediastinal teratoma in a 47-year-old male. The patient was found to have an anterior mediastinal mass on a chest X-ray, which was taken two months before his presentation to Asan Medical Center. A subsequent computed tomography scan revealed an 8.9×7.1×8.0 cm heterogeneous mass in the anterior mediastinum. He underwent an excision via median sternotomy. The histopathologic study identified a mature teratoma with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

A 61-year-old woman was admitted due to severe coughing. Chest X-ray revealed a mass in the right lower lung field at standing position and in the right upper lung field at supine position. A position of the mass changed with change in her posture because of lobar torsion. Bronchoscopic biopsy of the polypoid tumor obstructing the right upper bronchus revealed adenocarcinoma. She had hypertrophic osteoarthropathy simultaneously. Right pneumonectomy was performed. Postoperative course has been uneventful for 3 years.

Although pleural thickening is a common finding on routine chest X-rays, its radiological and clinical features remain poorly characterized. Our investigation of 28,727 chest X-rays obtained from annual health examinations confirmed that pleural thickening was the most common abnormal radiological finding. We reviewed the records of 36 patients with myasthenia gravis who had CT of the anterior mediastinum before thymectomy in an effort to improve preoperative detection of thymoma. At surgery, 10 patients had thymomas, 21 had germinal center follicular hyperplasia, and 5 had histologically normal glands. CT performed on an EMI 5005 was abnormal in 23 of 36 patients; 10 had thymoma, 11 had hyperplasia, 1 had a normal gland, and 1 had a cyst. In this paper the authors describe a case of central hyperventilation syndrome associated with a neural crest tumor. The girl had several apneic spells at the age of three years. She had a tracheostomy and mechanically assisted ventilation while asleep. Routine hematologic studies and chest x-ray were within normal limits. Computerized tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left paraspinal mass suggestive of a neural crest tumor. This mass was excised and histopathologic findings of this tumor revealed a ganglioneuroblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcomas of the bone and soft tissues are detected after the onset of pain, detectable mass and related symptoms in the absence of a standardized screening examination. However, primary chest wall sarcomas can be incidentally detected upon chest X-ray or computed tomography. Thoracic varices are rare anomalies in patients with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Gastro-oesophageal varices usually drain into the azygos or hemiazygos vein. The case is reported here of an unusual collateral pathway of gastro-oesophageal varices with drainage to the vena anonyma system presenting as lung masses on chest X-ray, which completely resolved after successful liver transplantation.
