Histomorphometric Changes of the Masseter Muscle of Rats After a Single Injection of Botulinum Toxin Type A.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) produces structural changes in masticatory muscles. However, not all histomorphometric parameters affected by BoNT-A parameters have been assessed. This study investigated the histomorphometric changes in the masseter muscle of rats after a single injection of BoNT-A. METHODS: Forty-four adult animals were randomly divided into control group (n = 22) and BoNT-A group (n = 22). Controls received a single dose of 0.14 mL/kg of saline in masseter muscles, and the BoNT-A group received a 7 U/Kg of BoNT-A. The groups received th

Bilateral treatment of the masseter with botulinum toxin: Consequences for mastication, muscle force and the mandibular condyle.

BACKGROUND: Clinical use of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) in masticatory muscles is usually bilateral, but most studies on the functional consequences of BoNT treatment have used unilaterally treated animals. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that bilateral BoNT treatment of the rabbit masseter hampers mastication and to assess its effects on bone density of the mandibular condyles. METHODS: Ten 5-month-old female rabbits received injections of BoNT into both masseter muscles and nine sham animals received saline. Body weight, incisor bite force during masseter tetany, and surface and fine-

Associations of tissue damage induced inflammatory plasticity in masseter muscle with the resolution of chronic myalgia.

Gene plasticity during myogenous temporomandibular disorder (TMDM) development is largely unknown. TMDM could be modeled by intramuscular inflammation or tissue damage. To model inflammation induced TMDM we injected complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into masseter muscle (MM). To model tissue damage induced TMDM we injected extracellular matrix degrading collagenase type 2 (Col). CFA and Col produced distinct myalgia development trajectories. We performed bulk RNA-seq of MM to generate gene plasticity time course. CFA initiated TMDM (1d post-injection) was mainly linked to chemo-tacticity of mon

Changes of neuroplasticity in cortical motor control of human masseter muscle related to orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment is a common clinical method of malocclusion. Studies have found that neurons in the sensorimotor cortex of the brain undergo adaptive remodeling in response to changes in oral behavior or occlusion. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether orthodontic treatment could be sufficient to cause neuroplastic changes in the corticomotor excitability of the masseter muscle. METHODS: Fifteen Angle Class II malocclusion patients who were receiving orthodontic treatment participated in the study. Cortical excitability was assessed by electromyographic activity changes evoked by t

Non-traumatic myositis ossificans of the Right masseter muscle: a case report and review of the literature.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare disease in which ossification develops in the muscle or soft tissue. MO traumatica is recognized by ossification of the soft tissues after acute or repetitive trauma, burns, or surgical procedures. It usually involves the extremity muscles. In the head and neck region, the masseter is most commonly involved in MO traumatica. Surgical resection of the ossified tissue has been the most commonly used treatment for this disorder, with a high postoperative recurrence rate. We report a case of non-traumatic MO of the Masseter muscle with different size round calcif

The Electrical Activity of Masseter and Anterior Temporal Muscles in Patients With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

This study aimed to determine the electrical activity of masseter and anterior temporal muscles in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) and compare it with healthy volunteers. The study involved 20 female patients (mean age 20 ± 4 years) with unilateral cleft lip and palate who had undergone lip and palate surgery in childhood and finished the first-phase orthodontic therapy with level and align teeth. Twenty age- and sex-matched volunteers with no cleft lip and palate were involved as controls. Electromyographic (EMG) signals of masseter and anterior temporal muscles were recor

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle: review of the literature and report of two additional cases.

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle is uncommon. The condition is benign and results in reactive heterotopic bone formation, usually producing limitation of opening of the jaws. Radiographic and microscopic examination can confirm the diagnosis. Treatment of myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle is surgical, with other modalities used when occurring in other muscles of the body.

Masseter muscle rigidity and malignant hyperthermia susceptibility in pediatric patients. An update on management and diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists regarding the definition of masseter muscle rigidity (MMR) and anesthetic management after MMR. This study reports current anesthetic management after MMR, estimates the incidence of clinical malignant hyperthermia (MH) in patients with MMR, and is the first to evaluate the coincidence of MMR with malignant hyperthermia susceptibility (MHS) according to the 1987 North American Malignant Hyperthermia Group protocol. METHODS: Practicing anesthesiologists referred pediatric patients for biopsy between 1986 and 1991 based on evidence of MMR after succinylcholine (19

[The effect of muscle relaxants on masseter tone. An experimental study in an MH-susceptible swine model].

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) may occur, when a genetically predisposed individual or pig (MHS) is exposed to triggering agents. The increase in free, ionized sarcoplasmic calcium inducing the vicious circle of MH is believed to result from calcium-induced release with volatile anaesthetics, and from depolarization-induced calcium release with succinylcholine (SCH). The administration of SCH to susceptible humans or pigs frequently produces an increase in masticatory muscle tone. This hitherto ill-defined phenomenon is referred to as "masseter spasm" (MS). We have attempted to elucidate the path

Deep learning-based automated masseter muscle area on routine CT stratifies survival in oral cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a deep learning model for automated masseter muscle segmentation on routine head and neck CT and to evaluate whether the derived masseter muscle area is associated with overall survival in oral cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A U-Net-based model was trained using a model-development cohort (n = 348) with preoperative CT and bioelectrical impedance analysis. Masseter muscle area was measured on an axial slice at the maxillary sinus floor, and sex-specific cutoffs for low masseter muscle area were derived against sarcopenia defined by appendicular skeletal mus

Transoral finger-retraction for surgical resection of benign tumors involving masseter muscle and buccal space.

The regular treatment of tumors involving masseter muscle and buccal space like accessory parotid pleomorphic adenoma is performed with external approaches including parotidectomy and facelift incision, which require a large flap elevation and leave an external scar. The current study aimed to revisit the clinical features of the benign tumors involving masseter muscle and buccal space in the mid-posterior cheek region and presented a case series of the patients (n = 10) who underwent surgical resection by transoral finger-retraction. The accessory parotid pleomorphic adenoma (n = 4) and heman

Temporal relationship between sleep-time masseter muscle activity and apnea-hypopnea events: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep disorder due mainly to peripheral causes, characterized by repeated episodes of obstruction of the upper airways, associated with arousals and snoring. Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that is characterized as rhythmic (phasic) or nonrhythmic (tonic) and is not a movement disorder or a sleep disorder in otherwise healthy individuals. Given the potentially severe consequences and complications of apnea, the concurrent high prevalence of SB in daily dental practice, getting deeper into the correlat

Suspected Succinylcholine-Induced Masseter Muscle Rigidity During Rapid Sequence Intubation in the Air Medical Setting.

Trismus, or masseter muscle rigidity, is a rare but previously described complication of succinylcholine-induced neuromuscular blockade. We present a case report that details unique aspects of suspected masseter muscle rigidity in the prehospital setting air medical setting after attempted rapid sequence intubation with succinylcholine. We then discuss the need for knowledge base of this life-threatening and rarely described syndrome as well as the importance of working through a differential diagnosis and specific trismus-focused airway algorithm. Quantitative evaluation of masseter muscle stiffness in patients with temporomandibular disorders using shear wave elastography.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to quantify masseter muscle stiffness in patients with masticatory myofascial pain. METHODS: Stiffness was measured using shear wave elastography, which expresses stiffness as shear wave velocity (Vs). A phantom study was conducted to confirm the reliability of the measuring device. The study participants were 26 females with bilateral masseter muscle pain who were classified into either Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) group Ia (myofascial pain; n=13) or RDC/TMD group Ib (myofascial pain with limited opening; n=13). Electromyographic analysis of masseter and anterior temporalis muscle in sleep bruxers after occlusal splint wearing.

Bruxism is widely defined as an anxiety response to environmental stress. Occlusal splints are frequently used in sleep bruxism, to protect teeth from damage resulting from the contraction force of mandibular muscles, or to reduce the orofacial pain by relaxing masticatory muscles. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was performed in 15 women presenting sleep bruxism and temporomandibular disorders related to occupational stress, after nocturnal use of the occlusal splint. The EMG signals were recorded twice per patient: After a work shift (pre-
