Effect of occlusal splint thickness on electrical masticatory muscle activity during rest and clenching.

The extent of separation between the maxillary and mandibular teeth in the fabrication of interocclusal splints designed to achieve efficiency and muscle relaxation is controversial and undefined in the literature. Based on this premise, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of interocclusal splint thicknesses of 3 and 6 millimeters on the electrical activity of the anterior temporal and masseter muscles during rest and dental clenching. Twenty asymptomatic individuals (10 males and 10 females) were selected using the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC). Electromyography (EMG) was pe

Influence of static and dynamic occlusal characteristics and muscle force on masticatory performance in dentate adults.

Masticatory performance is the outcome of a complex interplay of several factors. This study was carried out to determine the relationship between masticatory performance and several muscular-related and occlusion-related factors in a population with a full or near-full complement of natural teeth. One-hundred dentate young adults participated in this cross-sectional study. Maximum muscular force with jaw, hand, tongue, and cheek were measured by means of a gnatodynamometer. Occlusal contact area and number of teeth in contact were determined in the maximal intercuspal position and in a 1.5-mm

A polysomnographic study on masticatory and tongue muscle activity during obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Masticatory and tongue muscle activity was examined polysomnographically in 14 patients with sleep apnea syndrome and six snorers. The all-night polysomnographic recordings included electromyograms (EMG) of the genioglossal, the masseter and the inferior head of the lateral pterygoid muscles, nasal airflow and thoracoabdominal respiratory effort. The apneas were defined and classified into three types (obstructive, central and mixed). EMG amplitudes of each muscle were measured before, during and after the obstructive and central apneas. In the apnea patients the three muscles showed significa

Masticatory muscle function after unilateral condylar fractures: a prospective and quantitative electromyographic study.

Electromyographic (EMG) recording of masticatory muscle activity was performed in 9 adult men with unilateral condylar fracture immediately after conservative treatment of the condylar fracture (T0) and 4 (T1) and 8 (T2) months after the trauma. From T0 to T2, maximal voluntary contraction of the anterior and posterior temporal muscles and of the masseter muscle opposite the fracture side (contralateral) increased significantly. Activity in the anterior temporal muscles also rose significantly during natural chewing, whereas the masseter muscles remained at the same level, but activity consist

Signal to noise ratio of masticatory muscle activity of functional and non-functional oral tasks.

BACKGROUND: Electromyographic activity (EMG) of masticatory muscles during wakefulness is understudied. It is unclear if single channel ambulatory EMG devices are sensitive enough to detect masticatory muscle activity (MMA) during wakefulness. OBJECTIVES: To compare the MMA of various oral tasks recorded with a single channel EMG device ((Grindcare4-datalogger Prototype device) (GC4-β)) and a conventional EMG (cEMG) device. METHODS: EMG activity of 30 standardised oral tasks was recorded unilaterally from the masseter and anterior temporalis muscle in 24 healthy volunteers using GC4-β and a

[A Difficult Airway after Anesthetic Induction in a Patient with Masticatory Muscle Tendon-Aponeurosis Hyperplasia].

We present a case of masticatory muscle tendon- aponeurosis hyperplasia in a patient who underwent general anesthesia for gynecologic surgery. The patient's square-shaped mandible was noticed during preoperative assessment by an anesthesiologist. Further investigation revealed masticatory muscle tendon- aponeurosis hyperplasia. Anesthetic induction agents were administered, and facemask ventilation was initi- ated easily. As the anesthesiologist had predicted, the patient's mouth opening was reduced after administration of muscle relaxants, and keeping her mouth open was more difficult than wh

Masticatory muscle sleep background electromyographic activity is elevated in myofascial temporomandibular disorder patients.

Despite theoretical speculation and strong clinical belief, recent research using laboratory polysomnographic (PSG) recording has provided new evidence that frequency of sleep bruxism (SB) masseter muscle events, including grinding or clenching of the teeth during sleep, is not increased for women with chronic myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The current case-control study compares a large sample of women suffering from chronic myofascial TMD (n = 124) with a demographically matched control group without TMD (n = 46) on sleep background electromyography (EMG) during a laboratory PS

Importance of coronoidotomy and masticatory muscle myotomy in surgical release of trismus caused by submucous fibrosis.

Thirty patients with trismus resulting from betel nut chewing-induced oral submucous fibrosis were treated with either fibrotic tissue release only (group I) or fibrotic tissue release in combination with masticatory muscle myotomy and coronoidotomy (group II). The latter procedures were only performed in patients whose intraoperative interincisal distance remained less than 35 mm immediately after submucous fibrous tissue release. There were eight and 22 patients in groups I and II, respectively. In group I patients, the average intraoperative interincisal distance improved from 19.5 mm to 42
