Maternal behavioral health symptom profiles in early family life: complexity and context.

Behavioral health problems affect at least 15% of mothers, but few studies have examined how different problems cluster together. Characterizing symptom profiles and their correlates early in the family life cycle can extend existing understanding beyond that provided by studies based on single problems. Mothers in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, a national birth cohort of racially diverse and mostly unmarried mothers (N = 4205), reported depression, anxiety, and substance dependence symptoms. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified mothers' symptom profiles in their children's

Multiple optic gland signaling pathways implicated in octopus maternal behaviors and death.

Post-reproductive life in the female octopus is characterized by an extreme pattern of maternal care: the mother cares for her clutch of eggs without feeding until her death. These maternal behaviors are eradicated if the optic glands, the octopus analog of the vertebrate pituitary gland, are removed from brooding females. Despite the optic gland's importance in regulating maternal behavior, the molecular features underlying optic gland function are unknown. Here, we identify major signaling systems of the Octopus bimaculoides optic gland. Through behavioral analyses and transcriptome sequenci

Maternal Support as a Predictor of Children's Sexualized Behaviors Following Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Although previous studies have concluded that maternal support following children's sexual abuse disclosures is an important predictor of children's symptoms, the empirical data to support this is limited. Much of the small prior literature has used measures of maternal support without adequately reported psychometric properties, which may obscure the true relationship between support and children's sexual behaviors. Further, it is unclear whether maternal support is related to children's sexual acting out in the context of known predictors of sexual behaviors. The purposes of the current stud

Maternal elaborative reminiscing mediates the effect of child maltreatment on behavioral and physiological functioning.

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggest that the way in which parents discuss everyday emotional experiences with their young children (i.e., elaborative reminiscing) has significant implications for child cognitive and socioemotional functioning, and that maltreating parents have a particularly difficult time in engaging in this type of dialogue. This dyadic interactional exchange, therefore, has the potential to be an important process variable linking child maltreatment to developmental outcomes at multiple levels of analysis. The current investigation evaluated the role of maternal elab

Behavioral changes after maternal separation are reversed by chronic constant light treatment.

BACKGROUND: Rats subjected to maternal separation display behavioral alterations (e.g. increased immobility in the forced swim test) and molecular changes (e.g. in growth factors and related signal transduction proteins). Light treatment has previously been shown to have antidepressant effects in rat models of depression, but has not been studied in a rodent model of maternal separation. METHODS: This study focused on maternally separated rat pups. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of chronic constant light exposure during adolescence with the selective serotonin reuptake inhib

Maternal separation modulates short-term behavioral and physiological indices of the stress response.

Early-life stress produces an anxiogenic profile in adulthood, presumably by activating the otherwise quiescent hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis during the vulnerable 'stress hyporesponsive period'. While the long-term effects of such early-life manipulations have been extensively characterized, little is known of the short-term effects. Here, we compared the short-term effects of two durations of maternal separation stress and one unseparated group (US) on behavioral and physiological indices of the stress response in rat pups. Separations included 3h on each of 12days, from postnata

Repeated maternal separation does not alter sucrose-reinforced and open-field behaviors.

Repeated separation of rat pups from their mothers has been reported to increase behavioral fearfulness and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) response to stress. Recently, it was suggested that it might also alter behavioral responses to natural and drug rewards. Here, we studied whether maternal separation (MS) would alter behavioral responses to a sucrose reward. We also tested whether MS would alter behavioral responses in an open-field test using a novel method of analysis [Software for the Exploration of Exploration (SEE)]. Long-Evans rat pups were exposed to either 180 min of MS, 15 m

Associations of maternal and paternal preconception and maternal pregnancy urinary phthalate biomarker and bisphenol A concentrations with offspring autistic behaviors: The PEACE study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental chemical exposures in utero may play a role in autism development. While preconception risk factors for autism are increasingly being investigated, little is known about the influence of chemical exposures during the preconception period, particularly for paternal exposures. METHODS: In 195 children from the Preconception Environmental exposures And Childhood health Effects (PEACE) cohort born to parents recruited from a fertility clinic in Boston, Massachusetts between 2004 and 2017, we quantified concentrations of 11 phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A (BPA) in u

Control and connection: Associations between maternal behavioral control and toddler attachment patterns.

This study examines the association between the level of maternal behavioral control and toddlers' attachment patterns, focusing on toddlers aged 12-24 months (M = 17.18 months, SD = 3.31). The sample consisted of 60 Egyptian mother-child dyads. Maternal behavioral control-conceptualized within the framework of Interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory (IPARTheory)-was measured using the behavioral control scale, while toddlers' attachment patterns were assessed using Mary Ainsworth's Strange Situation Procedure (SSP). Results revealed significant differences in maternal behavioral control lev

A comprehensive model of maternal health behavior: the interplay of sociodemographic and digital determinants in Nigeria.

This study develops an integrated model to identify significant sociodemographic and digital determinants of maternal health service utilization among married women in Nigeria. A cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) was conducted on 28,888 married women aged 15-49. All analyses were conducted using the Complex Samples module in IBM SPSS Statistics, applying design-corrected variance estimation appropriate for the stratified cluster design of the NDHS. The design-weighted prevalence of six or more antenatal care visits was 25%, and the prev

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that the odds of adolescents with maternal incarceration histories being classified into the "high dietary risk behavior," "high in

Autoinflammatory periodic fever syndromes in preschoolers: neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and maternal psychosocial outcomes.

UNLABELLED: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) are the most common pediatric autoinflammatory syndromes, yet their developmental and psychosocial impacts during early childhood remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study compared developmental and behavioral outcomes, parental mental health, and perceived child vulnerability in preschool-aged children diagnosed with PFAPA syndrome or FMF versus healthy controls. A total of 158 children aged 18-71 months (79 patients, 79 controls of similar age

Enhancement of Social Communication Behaviors in Young Children With Autism Affects Maternal Stress.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show difficulties in social communication behaviors, emotion regulation and daily living skills, and they frequently present with challenging behaviors. In parents of children with ASD, higher rates of stress and mental health problems have been reported than in parents of either typically developing children or children with other conditions. In this study, we tested whether maternal well-being changes with improved social communicative behaviors of children with ASD receiving early intervention. We examined developmental changes in 72 pre-schooler

Associations Between Maternal Antenatal Corticosteroid Treatment and Mental and Behavioral Disorders in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal antenatal corticosteroid treatment is standard care to accelerate fetal maturation when birth before 34 weeks is imminent. Recently, expansion of the indications beyond 34 gestational weeks has been debated. However, data about long-term outcomes remain limited, especially among infants who after treatment exposure are born at term. OBJECTIVE: To study if antenatal corticosteroid treatment is associated with mental and behavioral disorders in children born at term (≥37 weeks 0 days' gestation) and preterm (<37 weeks 0 days' gestation) and if unmeasured familial confoundin

Maternal and paternal physical abuse: Unique and joint associations with child behavioral problems.

Although there is a substantial amount of literature documenting the relationship between child abuse and behavioral problems in China, there is, on the other hand, a limited number of studies on the joint and unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with child behaviors within the Chinese context. The present study, using the family systems theory as the theoretical framework, aims to examine these joint and the unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with externalizing and internalizing behaviors among a community sample of Chinese children. Maternal knowledge and care-seeking behaviors for newborn jaundice in Sagamu, Southwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Delay in the presentation of infants with jaundice at the hospital is a reason for the persistence of the severe forms of jaundice. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the influence of maternal knowledge on newborn jaundice on their care-seeking practices. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, mothers whose infants presented with significant hyperbilirubinemia were assessed for knowledge about jaundice in relation to their care seeking behaviors. RESULTS: Out of 98 mothers, 57.1% had good knowledge on newborn jaundice. Most of the mothers with good knowledge had tertiary educati

Maternal fluoxetine treatment decreases behavioral response to dopaminergic drugs in female pups.

Since serotonin (5-HT) acts as neurotrophic factor, the use of fluoxetine (FLX) by mothers during pregnancy and/or lactation could disrupt brain development of the progeny. To unveil if maternal FLX exposure could compromise the functional integrity of monoaminergic and GABA-ergic neurotransmission, the behavioral responses of male and female mouse pups to diethylpropion, apomorphine, 8-OH-DPAT and diazepam were evaluated. Swiss dams were gavaged daily with FLX (7.5 mg/kg) or tap water during pregnancy day zero to weaning (postnatal day 21). Pups were evaluated on postnatal day 40. The behavio

Inhibitory effect of buspirone and diazepam, but not of 8-OH-DPAT, on maternal behavior and aggression.

The action of diazepam (0.0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg) and the serotonergic compounds buspirone (0.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg) and 8-OH-DPAT (0.0, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/kg) on maternal behavior and aggression were studied. An activity test was made after these treatments to control for unspecific actions due to motor impairment. Diazepam and buspirone dose-dependently inhibited the expression of maternal aggression and the active components of maternal behavior such as retrieving and nest building. 8-OH-DPAT did not affect these behaviors. 8-OH-DPAT (1.0 mg/kg) provoked the serotonergic syndrome and hypothermi

Involvement of the main but not the accessory olfactory system in maternal behavior of primiparous and multiparous ewes.

The respective roles of the main and accessory olfactory systems in the development of maternal behavior and selective suckling were investigated in parturient primiparous and multiparous ewes. Vomeronasal nerve section before parturition did not disturb either maternal behavior or maternal selectivity at suckling. By contrast, anosmia induced by zinc sulphate infusion had significant effects on the onset of maternal behavior in primiparous ewes. The onset of licking and of suckling were delayed and licking times and maternal bleats were reduced. Such disturbances were not observed in multipar
