Previous research on the generational stability of epigenetic transgenerational inheritance was conducted through a ten-generation study of all transgenerational generations in mammals. This study demonstrated both the stability of epigenetic inheritance across generations and demonstrated a generational increase incidence of disease pathology. Building on this research, the present study follows the same lineage of rats with ancestral vinclozolin exposure through twenty generations. The findings offer important insights into long-term mammalian models of epigenetic transgenerational inheritan

Body size is a trait with many potential impacts on fitness. Adult body size can affect the strength of condition-dependent parental effects that determine offspring phenotypes, with potentially important transgenerational consequences. In a preliminary experiment, larval food deprivation (30 min daily access) created Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) females that weighed <50% of controls reared on ad libitum food (eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller). Although only 1/3 of larvae survived to adulthood in the 30 min treatment, adult pairs produced eggs that were not significan

In a Japanese family, a propositus and his mother had crossed polydactyly type I. A maternal grandaunt also had preaxial polydactyly of the feet. The findings that both of the mother and son had the identical type of polydactyly are consistent with an autosomal dominant inheritance with variable expressivity. Other explanations include X-linked recessive inheritance, polygenic inheritance, and a chance occurrence of the 2 different kinds of polydactyly.

Exposure to maternally derived steroids during embryonic development can elicit phenotypic effects in the resulting offspring. Studies of maternal steroid effects, especially rich in mammals and birds, have offered exciting insights into the evolution of maternal effects in vertebrates. To extend this literature, we quantified levels of steroids in the eggs of four neotropical dendrobatid frogs that lay terrestrial clutches, a reproductive strategy that has evolved multiple times in amphibians. Building on our observational results, we then manipulated levels of pregnenolone and progesterone i

We present a prenatal case with a 45,X,dic(Y;15) (q11.23;p11.1) karyotype and describe the inheritance pattern of the chromosome 15s. Chromosome 15 has an imprinted region and inheritance of both chromosome 15 from one parent results in either Angelman syndrome (AS) (paternal inheritance) or Prader Willi syndrome (PWS) (maternal inheritance). Parental chromosome studies revealed that the father carried the same dicentric (Y;15) translocation. Since familial chromosome rearrangements can result in aberrant chromosomal segregation during meiosis, we wanted to exclude paternal uniparental inherit

This meta-analysis was performed to clarify controversial associations of the MTHFR 677 C > T gene polymorphism in maternal and foetal tissue with neonatal defects. It was reported the association of MTHFR 677 C > T gene polymorphism with frequencies of neonatal defects including congenital heart disease (CHD), neural tube defects (NTD), non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (NSCL/P), and Down syndrome (DS). Depending on the neonatal defect subtypes, MTHFR 677 C > T gene polymorphism was associated with NTD, CHD (except for codominant mode of inheritance (TC/CC) and dominant mode of inheritance (

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is more prevalent in men but Genetic Generalized Epilepsies (GGE) seem to be more common in women. A predominant maternal inheritance has been previously described in GGE. Our objective was to determine sex and inheritance patterns in a GGE population compared to mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLEHS).
METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study including adult GGE and MTLEHS patients followed up at a tertiary epilepsy center from January 2016 to December 2019. Patients' familial history was obtained by a detailed questionnaire. Cl

The inheritance of substance abuse, including opioid abuse, may be influenced by genetic and non-genetic factors related to the environment, such as stress and socioeconomic status. These non-genetic influences on the heritability of a trait can be attributed to epigenetics. Epigenetic inheritance can result from modifications passed down from the mother, father, or both, resulting in either maternal, paternal, or parental epigenetic inheritance, respectively. These epigenetic modifications can be passed to the offspring to result in multigenerational, intergenerational, or transgenerational i

The authors report on a child with bilateral typical split-hand (ectrodactyly) and tibial aplasia, probably the first Indian report. Minor limb malformations in the maternal side suggests an autosomal dominant inheritance. The clinical spectrum and the inheritance of this malformation are discussed. Prenatal screening in families with such malformations is essential.

Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive storage disorder that most commonly results from the inheritance of one identifiable mutant glucocerebrosidase (GBA1) allele from each parent. Here, we report two cases of type 2 GD resulting from the inheritance of one identifiable paternal mutant allele and one allele that likely resulted from a maternal germline mutation. Germline mutations or mosiacism are not generally associated with autosomal recessive disorders. The probands from the two unrelated families had the same maternal mutation, leu444pro, that we propose resulted from a de novo m

INTRODUCTION: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a hereditary neuromuscular disorder affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Although sex differences have been explored in other neuromuscular disorders, research on this topic in DM1 remains limited. The present study aims to analyze sex differences (both the patient's and disease-transmitting parent's sex) with a focus on CNS outcomes.
METHODS: Retrospective data from 146 non-congenital DM1 patients were analyzed, including clinical, molecular, neuropsychological, and neuroradiological data. Sex and inheritance pattern differences were an

BACKGROUND: Risk for Tourette disorder, and chronic motor or vocal tic disorders (referenced here inclusively as CTD), arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. While multiple studies have demonstrated the importance of direct additive genetic variation for CTD risk, little is known about the role of cross-generational transmission of genetic risk, such as maternal effect, which is not transmitted via the inherited parental genomes. Here, we partition sources of variation on CTD risk into direct additive genetic effect (narrow-sense heritability) and maternal effect.

BACKGROUND The children of depressed parents are more likely to suffer from mental illness, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD). However, most data come from adolescent and young-adult populations, and published studies have reported inconsistent results regarding intergenerational transmission. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively investigated hospitalized depressed patients with positive family history (FHP) from 1 Jan 2008 to 31 Dec 2017 and analyzed the differences in sex distribution in the intergenerational transfer risk of major depressive disorder. RESULTS We enrolled 528 p

Maternal effect senescence, a decline in offspring viability with maternal age, has been documented across diverse animals, but its mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we test maternal effect senescence and explore its possible molecular mechanisms in a fish. We compared the levels of maternal mRNA transcripts of DNA repair genes and mtDNA copies in eggs and the levels of DNA damage in somatic and germline tissues between young and old female sticklebacks. We also tested, in an in vitro fertilization experiment, whether maternal age and sperm DNA damage level interactively influence the e

Hirschsprung's disease usually occurs as an isolated malformation as a result of multifactorial causation. A family in which four males (two brothers and two maternal uncles) had Hirschsprung's disease and absence or hypoplasia of the nails and distal phalanges of the great toe and thumb (type D brachydactyly) is described. Hand abnormalities were not present in any other family members, and the obligate heterozygous females were without gastrointestinal problems. The pattern of inheritance was consistent with X-linked recessive inheritance; however, autosomal dominant inheritance with incompl

We report a family in which three out of four siblings had tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). The family history showed TOF in the daughter of a maternal cousin, while no other congenital heart diseases were discovered. Although no teratogenic environmental agent was discovered, the absence of parental consanguinity and the presence of another affected relative suggest multifactorial inheritance. Autosomal recessive inheritance cannot be ruled out.

Mitochondria of embryos in most plants and animals are inherited from the egg cell rather than the sperm cell, a phenomenon known as mitochondrial maternal inheritance. Nevertheless, how plants regulate paternal mitochondrial elimination (PME) has long remained a mystery. We discovered micromitophagy in higher plants and revealed that micromitophagy could serve as a specific mechanism underlying PME, which is triggered by fate determination of male germline (MG) cells. This process underpins maternal mitochondrial inheritance and normal early embryogenesis. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Infantile hemangioma (IH) includes, among its other risk factors, familial clustering, but a definitive understanding of IH's inheritance model and genetic basis is lacking. Our objective was to collect IH pedigrees in Finland, to study the inheritance patterns of IH within these families, and to analyze the characteristics of familial IHs.
METHODS: We identified 185 patients with IH who visited our vascular anomaly clinic between 2004 and 2007. Based on hospital records and a questionnaire sent to these patients and their families, IH characteristics and family hist

BACKGROUND: Myoclonus-dystonia is an autosomal dominantly inherited movement disorder, clinically characterized by myoclonic jerks and dystonic postures or movements. A previous functional magnetic resonance imaging study showed altered cortical activation patterns in clinically affected SGCE mutation carriers when compared with controls consistent with defective sensorimotor integration. Genetically, the disorder is characterized by the maternal imprinting mechanism; ie, patients who inherit the mutation from their fathers will develop symptoms. However, several clinically manifest patients w
