Theoretical analysis of the effect of the transbilayer movement of phospholipid molecules on the dynamic behavior of a microtube pulled out of an aspirated vesicle.

Observations over extended times of a lipid microtube (tether) formed from a lecithin vesicle have shown that under constant external loads the tether exhibits a continuous slow growth. It is considered that this growth is a consequence of the net transbilayer movement of phospholipid molecules in a direction which relieves the membrane strain resulting from the elastic deformation of the vesicle. The elastic deformation mode responsible for this effect is identified as the relative expansion of the two membrane layers reflecting the non-local contribution to membrane bending. An equation for

[Effects of a high-pass filter on the Doppler blood flow signal].

A high-pass filter is used to remove the large signals scattered or reflected from stationary and slow moving objects in many clinical CW Doppler units. theoretical results are presented that such a filter will lead to overestimate of the mean velocity of Doppler blood flow. As for different frequency signals, high-pass filter have different amplitudes and phase responses, consequently, nonlinear phase shift is produced. It is proved by computer experiment that nonlinear phase shift caused by high-pass filter hardly has any effects on Doppler flow power spectrum if the high-pass filter does no

Compound action potential and single acoustic nerve fibres activity generation: an equivalent neuron approach.

The peripheral acoustic system can be easily subdivided into three distinct subsystems: a mechanical one (middle ear and basilar membrane), the set of mechanical-to-neural transducers (the inner and outer hair cells) and the neural part. The functional behaviour of the external and middle ear is well known, but the processes concerned with the transduction of mechanical motion into neural activity are still under investigation. Actually the mechanism of transmission of information concerning acoustic stimuli to the central nervous pathways is not clearly known. On the basis of physiological kn

Numerical modelling of label-structured cell population growth using CFSE distribution data.

BACKGROUND: The flow cytometry analysis of CFSE-labelled cells is currently one of the most informative experimental techniques for studying cell proliferation in immunology. The quantitative interpretation and understanding of such heterogenous cell population data requires the development of distributed parameter mathematical models and computational techniques for data assimilation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The mathematical modelling of label-structured cell population dynamics leads to a hyperbolic partial differential equation in one space variable. The model contains fundamental parameters

Framework for evaluation of physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models for use in safety or risk assessment.

Proposed applications of increasingly sophisticated biologically-based computational models, such as physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models, raise the issue of how to evaluate whether the models are adequate for proposed uses, including safety or risk assessment. A six-step process for model evaluation is described. It relies on multidisciplinary expertise to address the biological, toxicological, mathematical, statistical, and risk assessment aspects of the modeling and its application. The first step is to have a clear definition of the purpose(s) of the model in the particular assessm

Specific learning disorder in mathematics and moyamoya disease: A case report.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare neurological condition that causes impaired blood flow to the brain, transient ischemic attacks or strokes, and accompanying cognitive impairments, especially in executive functioning. There is little data on the impact of this rare condition on academic outcomes in late childhood and adolescence. Here, we present the case of Ms. X, a 17-year-old white female diagnosed with MMD, who presented with evidence of a specific learning disorder (SLD) in mathematics. Ms. X was diagnosed with MMD at 6 years old and underwent revascularization surgery. Though she recover

A Mathematical Model of Aqueous Humor Production and Composition.

PURPOSE: We develop a mathematical model that predicts aqueous humor (AH) production rate by the ciliary processes and aqueous composition in the posterior chamber (PC), with the aim of estimating how the aqueous production rate depends on the controlling parameters and how it can be manipulated. METHODS: We propose a compartmental mathematical model that considers the stromal region, ciliary epithelium, and PC. All domains contain an aqueous solution with different chemical species. We impose the concentration of all species on the stromal side and exploit the various ion channels present on

Dependencies and Ill-designed Parameters Within High-speed Videoendoscopy and Acoustic Signal Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The phonatory process is often judged during sustained phonation by analyzing the acoustic voice signal and the vocal fold vibrations. Many formulas and parameters have been suggested for qualifying the characteristics of the acoustic signal and the vocal fold vibrations during sustained phonation. These parameters are directly computed from the acoustic signal and the endoscopic glottal area waveform (GAW). The GAW is calculated from laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) recordings and describes the increase and decrease of the glottal area during the phonation process, that is

Quantum-enabled topological optimization of distributed energy storage for resilient black-start operations.

As modern power grids grow increasingly complex with the widespread deployment of renewable energy and distributed energy storage systems (ESS), ensuring robust and resilient black-start capabilities has become a critical challenge. Traditional black-start approaches, which typically rely on centralized hydro or diesel generators, are increasingly inadequate due to rising network complexity, the stochastic nature of renewables, and growing exposure to cyber-physical threats. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a quantum-enhanced framework for dynamic network reconfiguration an

Fundamental ratios and logarithmic periodicity in human limb bones.

Fundamental mathematical relationships are widespread in biology yet there is little information on this topic with regard to human limb bone lengths and none related to human limb bone volumes. Forty-six sets of ipsilateral upper and lower limb long bones and third digit short bones were imaged by computed tomography. Maximum bone lengths were measured manually and individual bone volumes calculated from computed tomography images using a stereologic method. Length ratios of femur : tibia and humerus : ulna were remarkably similar (1.21 and 1.22, respectively) and varied little (<7%) between

PHYSICAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE COMPLETENESS OF REMOVAL OF RESIDUAL PERFLUOROCARBON LIQUID IN VITREORETINAL SURGERY.

PURPOSE: Postoperative perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) retention would lead to serious complications, especially retinal toxicity and intraocular inflammation. This study aimed to elucidate the roles of air infusion pressure and residual balanced salt solution in PFCL evaporation during vitreoretinal surgery, thereby optimizing residual PFCL removal, minimizing complications, and improving patient outcomes. METHODS: Evaporation rates of perfluoro-n-octane and perfluoro-decalin were studied using a 3D-printed eye model under varying air infusion pressures from 10 to 40 mmHg. Computational fluid

Effect of cephalometer misalignment on calculations of facial asymmetry.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we evaluated errors introduced into the interpretation of facial asymmetry on posteroanterior (PA) cephalograms due to malpositioning of the x-ray emitter focal spot. We tested the hypothesis that horizontal displacements of the emitter from its ideal position would produce systematic displacements of skull landmarks that could be fully accounted for by the rules of projective geometry alone. METHODS: A representative dry skull with 22 metal markers was used to generate a series of PA images from different emitter positions by using a fully calibrated stereo cepha

Regression analyses and motile sperm subpopulation structure study as improving tools in boar semen quality analysis.

A precise estimation of the fertilizing ability of a boar ejaculate would be very useful to improve pig assisted reproduction results. For this purpose, we tested the mathematical combination of several parameters of the boar semen quality analysis, including the computer-assisted semen motility analysis (CASA), as a predictive fertility tool. The utilized mathematical relations among parameters were logistic and linear regressions. Two mathematical models obtained by logistic regression involving Osmotic Resistance Test (ORT Test), Hyperosmotic Resistance Test (HRT Test) and viability of fres

Trajectory-matching ABC-MCMC for simulating heterogeneous dynamics in mechanistic models.

The inherent heterogeneity of complex biological systems makes it difficult to experimentally and clinically explore individual outcomes within them. Mechanistic mathematical models are essential tools for studying such heterogeneity. Thus, there is increasing interest in integrating newer mechanistic model-based techniques, like virtual patient cohorts and virtual clinical trials, within experimental and regulatory pipelines to probe relationships that may be difficult or impossible to ascertain through traditional wetlab or clinical experimentation alone. Computational approaches like Approx

Statistical Tools for the Interpretation of Enzootic West Nile virus Transmission Dynamics.

Interpretation of enzootic West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance indicators requires little advanced mathematical skill, but greatly enhances the ability of public health officials to prescribe effective WNV management tactics. Stepwise procedures for the calculation of mosquito infection rates (IR) and vector index (VI) are presented alongside statistical tools that require additional computation. A brief review of advantages and important considerations for each statistic's use is provided.

Gait planning and double support phase model for functional electrical stimulation-based walking.

Joint or segment angle trajectories of able-bodied persons are often recorded or mimicked as reference trajectories for walking restoration in paraplegia. In this paper, lower limb segment angle trajectories are computed from simple mathematical models developed to represent functional electrical stimulation (FES) and a novel brace based walking. The new models incorporate the double support and single support phases of walking. Dynamic optimization is utilized to design walking trajectories that minimize muscle activations and arm reaction forces generated from the walker. Compared to the vol

Predictive oncology: a review of multidisciplinary, multiscale in silico modeling linking phenotype, morphology and growth.

Empirical evidence and theoretical studies suggest that the phenotype, i.e., cellular- and molecular-scale dynamics, including proliferation rate and adhesiveness due to microenvironmental factors and gene expression that govern tumor growth and invasiveness, also determine gross tumor-scale morphology. It has been difficult to quantify the relative effect of these links on disease progression and prognosis using conventional clinical and experimental methods and observables. As a result, successful individualized treatment of highly malignant and invasive cancers, such as glioblastoma, via su

Computational analysis of CFSE proliferation assay.

CFSE based tracking of the lymphocyte proliferation using flow cytometry is a powerful experimental technique in immunology allowing for the tracing of labelled cell populations over time in terms of the number of divisions cells undergone. Interpretation and understanding of such population data can be greatly improved through the use of mathematical modelling. We apply a heterogenous linear compartmental model, described by a system of ordinary differential equations similar to those proposed by Kendall. This model allows division number-dependent rates of cell proliferation and death and de
