Maxillofacial trauma poses an obvious threat to the patient's airway, which may not be immediately evident. In the multiply injured patient, the co-existence of actual or potential injuries elsewhere may complicate airway management, notably in the presence of full spinal immobilization. Following high-velocity trauma, injuries to the cervical spine must be assumed to be present. They also need to be ruled out in an appropriate and timely manner, as patients may wish to sit up. Assessment and management of the airway in maxillofacial trauma can be difficult, requiring a senior anaesthetist or

RATIONALE: Maxillofacial gunshot injury leads to significant soft tissue and bone defects, which compromise airway patency, thus posing a challenge for the anaesthesiologist. The utility of the videolaryngoscopy-assisted fibreoptic intubation (VAFI) technique in maxillofacial gunshot injury has not yet been described in the literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a young male presenting with extensive maxillofacial wounds with fractures of the bilateral maxilla, mandible and floor of orbit secondary to self-inflicted gunshot injury.
DIAGNOSIS: Major peri-operative concerns includ

Maxillofacial trauma frequently results from high-energy mechanisms that concurrently affect multiple body regions. While extremity injuries represent common concomitant injuries, their frequency and determinants remain inadequately characterized in Pakistani populations. This study aimed to determine the frequency, causes, and associated factors of upper and lower extremity injuries in patients presenting with maxillofacial trauma to a major tertiary care center in Peshawar, Pakistan.A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Lady

Background: Pediatric craniofacial fractures represent a distinct clinical entity characterized by unique anatomical and developmental factors that differentiate them from adult facial trauma. Despite their relative rarity, these injuries pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the presence of active growth centers and the potential for long-term functional and esthetic sequelae. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted among pediatric patients aged 0-17 years treated for craniofacial fractures between 2020 and 2024 at the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery,

BACKGROUND: Traffic accidents are a major etiological factor in maxillofacial injuries, exhibiting a high incidence rate. The Maxillofacial Injury Severity Score (MFISS) is utilized to assess the severity of maxillofacial trauma. Helmet use is a preventive measure against more serious injuries. Patients with maxillofacial trauma are at risk of complications and infections. Elevated neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in hospitalized patients correlates with a longer length of stay (LOS).
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between helmet types and MFISS scores, as well

BACKGROUND: Electric bikes (E-bikes) and powered scooters (P-scooters) have become increasingly popular modes of public transportation, but they have been associated with injuries of all kinds, including dental trauma. Helmet use is promoted as a means of reducing injuries in accidents involving motorized and unmotorized vehicles. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of helmet use on the number and severity of oral and maxillofacial injuries caused by E-bikes and P-scooters.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study design was used. The cohort included all patients referred to

A 60-year-old Thai male sustained severe and complex maxillofacial injuries, along with superficial neck and abdominal injuries, from being mauled by a black bear in Thailand. The accident caused massive injury to the face, including the right eye and periorbital soft tissue, right cheek, total nose, total upper lip, partial lower lip, and underlying bone structures. A computed tomography scan showed comminuted pan-facial fractures. Lifesaving procedures were performed at nearby hospitals, and then he was referred to our center one month after the injury. Our initial multi-stage surgical manag

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial Injury (MFI) is a major public health concern that is multifactorial in etiology-road traffic accidents (RTAs), falls and violence. RTAs are the major cause of maxillofacial injuries (MFIs) in countries like India. Recent studies have shown that maxillofacial fractures (MFF) constitute a significant proportion of facial injuries seen in hospitals (56.5%). The incidence of maxillofacial fractures can vary depending on several factors, including age, gender, and environmental factors. Of particular concern is the impact of seasonal variations, such as the monsoon season

Bear attack, a relatively rare cause of maxillofacial trauma, could lead to severe facial deformity as well as functional impairment. A 45-year-old male ranger was attacked by a bear and suffered an extensive maxillofacial avulsion injury, resulting in massive soft tissue loss (17.5 × 10 cm 2 ) on his left temporal-facial region with an intraoral defect (3 × 2 cm 2 ), surrounded by pus and necrotic tissue. Computed tomography revealed a comminuted fracture of the mandible, as well as bone defects in the left zygomatic bone, zygomatic arch, and part of the lateral orbital wall. in contrast with

Submental intubation is an alternative to tracheostomy when oral and nasal intubation are contraindicated in maxillofacial surgery. We report two cases of self-inflicted facial gunshot injuries in which pre-existing traumatic tracts were used to externalize reinforced endotracheal tubes, avoiding tracheostomy and additional incisions. Multidisciplinary coordination between anesthesia and surgical teams enabled safe airway management and unobstructed surgical access. Both patients remained intubated postoperatively for airway protection without airway-related complications. These cases suggest

Maxillofacial/neck vascular injuries caused by improvised explosive devices IEDs or ballistics injuries are life threatening when they cause severe haemorrhage resulting in airway compromise. One should always keep in mind that the best technique used is that which saves the patient's life and not the most expensive and/or technologically advanced. Medical professionals on the scene should have the necessary experience to handle the emergency situations of airway compromise and haemorrhage control. In this instance there is only, "one to a few minutes" to clear airway obstruction and arrest ha

Panfacial trauma involves concurrent injuries to the upper (frontal), mid-face (maxilla, zygoma, nose), and lower (mandible) thirds of the face. This creates a significant threat to airway patency due to anatomical distortion, bleeding, edema, and the risk of aspiration. Airway management in panfacial trauma is complex and requires a strategic, individualized approach. Any error in this process may lead to considerable morbidity and mortality in both prehospital and hospital settings and can also complicate subsequent fracture reconstruction. Rapid and appropriate airway control is crucial to

BACKGROUND: Every year around the world road traffic accidents (RTAs) cause 1.19 to 1.35 million deaths and 20-50 million non-fatal injuries that result in long-term disabilities and loss of potential life years (YPLL). These injuries have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the injured person to impact both their families and their wider communities. The Middle East shows a wide range of death rates from RTAs and Saudi Arabia experiences the highest fatality rate. This study aims to identify different maxillofacial fractures and other skeletal fractures in road traffic accident victi
