Home-delivered meals as an adjuvant to improve volume overload and clinical outcomes in hemodialysis.

Patients on chronic hemodialysis are counseled to reduce dietary sodium intake to limit their thirst and consequent interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), chronic volume overload and hypertension. Low-sodium dietary trials in hemodialysis are sparse and mostly indicate that dietary education and behavioral counseling are ineffective in reducing sodium intake and IDWG. Additional nutritional restrictions and numerous barriers further complicate dietary adherence. A low-sodium diet may also reduce tissue sodium, which is positively associated with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. A pote

Examination of vertical transmission of Bartonella quintana in body lice following multiple infectious blood meals.

Bartonella quintana is a re-emerging louse-borne pathogen. Horizontal transmission from the body louse vector (Pediculus humanus humanus) to a human host occurs through contact with infectious louse feces containing a high concentration of the bacteria. However, questions have remained about whether vertical transmission from infected vectors to their progeny, which could significantly influence the dynamics of transmission to humans, occurs in body lice. To address this subject, we performed a series of controlled laboratory experiments that examined the presence of B. quintana on the surface

Sharing meals: promising nutritional interventions for primary health care including nursing students and elderly people.

BACKGROUND: The risk of malnutrition among elderly people is high and living alone increases the risk. As the number of older persons living alone is expected to increase due to the demographic development of an increasing older population, more knowledge about low-cost, sustainable nutritional interventions is needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate how nursing students can be a resource in the nutritional care of older persons living alone by sharing weekly meals. METHODS: Twenty-three nursing students and 23 elderly people who lived alone and received home nursing care partici

Modifying Puree Meals in Residential Aged Care Facilities: A Multi-Centre Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

Purees are often recommended for older adults in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) to target swallowing difficulties and nutrition. However, they lack appeal and may have negative impacts on nutritional intake. This study investigated the subjective experiences and objective swallowing function and safety of older adults in response to a modified puree. Twenty-eight residents from three RACFs whose regular diets consisted of purees were recruited. Purees were modified to improve visual appeal by adding a commercial enzyme gellant. Each participant was observed during three puree and thr

Medically tailored meals for the management of symptomatic ascites: the SALTYFOOD pilot randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Ascites is a costly, morbid complication of cirrhosis. Although a low-sodium diet is central to the clinical management of ascites, its efficacy is limited by poor adherence. We aimed to determine the feasibility and impact of low-sodium medically tailored meals (MTM) intervention. METHODS: We enrolled 40 persons with cirrhosis and ascites at the time of a paracentesis in a 12-week, 1:1 randomized trial of standard of care (SOC) (low-sodium diet educational handout) or MTM with <2,000 mg of sodium, >2,100 kcal, and >80 g of protein including a nocturnal protein supplement. Public health campaign to promote hand hygiene before meals in a college of veterinary medicine.

Veterinary students can be exposed to environmental infectious agents in school that may include zoonotic pathogens. Encouraging effective hand hygiene can minimize the spread of zoonoses and promote public health and the One Health concept among veterinary students. The purpose of this study was to determine if a campaign could improve hand hygiene among veterinary students at extracurricular meetings serving meals. Nine Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (KSU-CVM) extracurricular organizations participated in the study, sanitizer was provided at each meeting, and baseline

Molecular identification of vertebrate and hemoparasite DNA within mosquito blood meals from eastern North Dakota.

To understand local transmission of vector-borne diseases, it is important to identify potential vectors, characterize their host feeding patterns, and determine if vector-borne pathogens are circulating within the region. This study simultaneously investigated these aspects of disease transmission by collecting engorged mosquitoes within two rural study sites in the central Red River Valley of North Dakota. Mosquitoes were identified, midguts were excised, and the blood was expelled from the midguts. DNA was extracted from blood meals and subjected to PCR and direct sequencing to identify the

Gastric emptying of solid meals in achalasic patients after successful pneumatic dilatation of the cardia.

Gastric emptying of a solid meal was measured by ultrasound scanning in 16 achalasic patients following successful pneumatic dilatation of the lower esophageal sphincter. The data were compared with those of a control group of 15 healthy subjects. Fasting and maximal postcibal antral sections were very similar in the two groups. On the contrary, the time interval before maximal antral dilatation, and the time necessary for the emptying of half or of the whole meal were significantly longer in the achalasic patients than in the controls. Half of the achalasic patients had longer emptying times

Estimation of effective dose from dose-area product measurements for barium meals and barium enemas.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection has recommended the use of a new dose quantity "effective dose". The doses to 22 organs of the human body are required for a formal calculation of this quantity. This paper shows that a quick estimate of the effective dose received by a patient from a barium meal or a barium enema can be made by multiplying the measured dose-area product for the complete examination by an appropriate conversion coefficient. Despite the varied techniques used for barium examinations, such an estimate is unlikely to be in error by more than 25%.

The effect of three test meals on exercise tolerance of an individual with McArdle's disease.

This study examined the effect of three test meals on exercise tolerance of an individual with McArdle's disease, a myopathy characterized by phosphorylase b deficiency. The subject's exercise tolerance and ability to achieve the second wind, in response to each test meal, was evaluated over a 16-week period using a bicycle ergometer in a double-blind situation. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. No significant differences were found. It was concluded that a high protein meal, a high polyunsaturated fat meal, and a meal containing MCT oil did not affect the exercise toleran

Effect of meal ingestion on parotid gland T2 values.

Parotid T2 mapping is used for quantitative evaluation, for example to assess early radiation‑induced changes in the parotid gland. However, the effects of pre-scan meals on parotid gland T2 values have not yet been reported. We investigated the temporal changes in parotid T2 values induced by meal ingestion. This prospective, single-center repeated-measures study included sixteen healthy volunteers. 3.0 T axial multi-slice multi-echo TSE T2 mapping was performed with and without fat suppression. Measurements were performed at fasting (baseline) and then alternated between 10 and 30 min after

The dietary regulation of LEAP2 depends on meal composition in mice.

Ghrelin represents a key hormone regulating energy balance. Upon activation of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), ghrelin increases blood glucose levels, food intake, and promotes weight gain. The liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) acts as an endogenous antagonist of the GHSR. While the regulation of LEAP2 and its effect on the GHSR likely occur in an opposite pattern to that of ghrelin, the dietary regulation of LEAP2 remains to be described. We, therefore, examined the regulation of LEAP2 by different acute meal challenges (glucose, mixed meal, olive, lard, and fis

Effects of alfalfa meal on quality and function of pork meatballs.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is abundant in dietary fiber, alfalfa saponins, and other active ingredients. However, the application of alfalfa is scarce in food. Meatball is one of the most popular meat products in daily life, but eating too many meatballs could result in obesity, hyperlipidemia, and other diseases. With increasing attention to healthy diet, how to keep the original color, aroma, taste, and shape of food with low fat and nutrition has become an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, different amounts of alfalfa meal or extruded alfalfa meal were added to pork meatballs to
