Management Strategy of Meconium Ileus-Outcome Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Meconium ileus (MI) is defined as an intestinal obstruction caused by the impaction of inspissated meconium in the terminal ileum. In this study, we have evaluated the nonoperative management of patients of simple MI without fluoroscopic support -an important requisite of the Noblett's criteria. Besides this, surgical management in cases of failed conservative management and complicated MI was also assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study. Various clinical and radiological parameters were evaluated. Conservative management included the use of w

Meconium-stained amniotic fluid: discharge vigorous newborns.

BACKGROUND: Most infants born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) are observed clinically for 24 h postnatally. Only 5% of infants born through MSAF develop the meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), a serious condition requiring medical intervention. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of 24-h postnatal observation of infants born through MSAF. METHODS: A cohort of 394 term neonates born through MSAF was studied. Data were collected on Apgar scores, the development of MAS and other perinatal factors. RESULTS: Nineteen of the 394 (4.8%) infants born through MSAF developed MAS. 298 (76%

Meconium periorchitis: case report and literature review.

Meconium periorchitis (MPO) is an uncommon entity associated with healed meconium peritonitis. The typical presentation is soft hydrocele at birth which becomes harder in weeks as the meconium calcifies. It mimics a scrotal mass, and, without knowledge of this rare disease, this may lead to unnecessary surgery. Both the masses and the calcifications have the tendency to resolve spontaneously without compromising the testicle. Sonographic features together with an abdominal plain film are diagnostic, and visualization of the normal testicle may be helpful in differentiating this tumor-like lesi

Fetal parvovirus B19 infection and meconium peritonitis.

A 33-year-old primigravida at 26 weeks gestation presented with fetal hydrops and fetal anemia following prior parvovirus B19 infection. The fetus required two intrauterine transfusions of packed red cells. At 35 weeks gestation, a cesarean section was performed for obstetric reasons. As a consequence of a prenatal bowel perforation, the neonate developed meconium peritonitis, for which she needed laparotomy. This case demonstrates that there may be an association between intrauterine parvovirus infection and meconium peritonitis, the latter possibly caused by vascular injury in fetal life.

[Meconium peritonitis: intrauterine follow-up--postnatal outcome].

In nine patients with meconium peritonitis prenatal ultrasonographic findings were correlated with the clinical course and outcome. Ultrasound findings included polyhydramnion (n = 4), ascites (n = 4), disseminated (n = 3) and solitary echogenic areas (n = 1), echopoor cystic areas (n = 3) and echogenic-echopoor solitary areas (n = 1). Intra-abdominal calcifications were found in five patients before delivery. Eight neonates survived and were subsequently followed up, one fetus died in utero. Four of the eight survivors required surgery, namely for meconium ileus (n = 1), perforation secondary

Meconium ileus due to extensive intestinal aganglionosis.

Seven full-term infants with aganglionosis extending into the small bowel presented with clinical, radiological, and operative features of meconium ileus. Misdiagnosis resulted in inappropriate treatment. The correct diagnosis was eventually established by rectal suction biopsy, mostly after either recurrent intestinal obstruction or stomal dysfunction, and after cystic fibrosis had been excluded. For two patients, the results of rectal suction biopsies were initially misleading. Two infants died. Extensive intestinal aganglionosis should be considered a rare possibility in all infants with me

Meconium ileus-like condition in Chinese neonates.

Between January 1985 and May 1990, 16 neonates were treated for meconium ileus (MI) at this hospital. All babies were born to Chinese couples. Seven of them were premature, but none of them weighed less than 1,000 g. Eight patients underwent operations either because of mistaken diagnosis, as ileal atresia or long-segment Hirschsprung's disease, or because of complicated MI, including two meconium peritonitis and one associated with ileal atresia. Gastrograffin enema was successful in management of eight uncomplicated MI. The albumin content in the meconium of the last nine cases, including fo

Meconium plug syndrome associated with neonatal intussusception.

Two neonates with clinical features of meconium plug syndrome (MPS) were found to have ileocolic intussusception associated with meconium plugs inspissated in the distal ileum. Hydrostatic reduction of the intussusception relieved the intestinal obstruction. Cystic fibrosis was excluded by sweat test and follow-up.

Meconium ileus equivalent: treatment with Hypaque enema.

Meconium ileus equivalent is an unusual cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. In this paper we report of our experience with a 29-year-old male with a long-standing history of cystic fibrosis and recurrent abdominal pain. Following barium examination of the stomach and small bowel, the patient developed increasing abdominal pain and evidence of meconium ileus equivalent as the etiology of his small bowel obstruction. The obstruction was relieved by administration of a 20% sodium diatrizoate enema and oral saline cathartics. The clinical and radiographic findings of meconium ileus equivale

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and the Association With Preschool Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is an acute neonatal respiratory disorder resulting from aspiration of meconium-stained amniotic fluid, leading to airway obstruction, inflammation, and hypoxemia. Although its perinatal presentation is well described, its long-term association with asthma remains unknown. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is MAS associated with subsequent development of preschool asthma? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a national database, which included infants born between 2010 and 2024 with continuous follow-up until 6 years of ag

Fetal diagnosis of meconium periorchitis: A case report.

Fetal meconium periorchitis (MPO) is rare prenatal diagnosis associated with meconium peritonitis. The prenatal ultrasound finding consists of an enlarged fetal scrotum with echogenic fluid and debris. In this report, we describe a case in which a prenatal diagnosis of MPO was accurately made at 32 weeks of gestation. The neonate delivered without complications, underwent immediate evaluation followed by major surgery, and ultimately had a favorable outcome. An accurate prenatal diagnosis is important to counsel the patient in a multidisciplinary approach. This case highlights the prenatal ult

The effect of meconium thickness level on neonatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Despite its prevalence and potential maternal and neonatal implications, the literature on the thickness levels of meconium stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) and its impact on neonatal outcomes is relatively outdated and relies on relatively small sample sizes. AIMS: To study if different thickness levels of MSAF correlate with adverse neonatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: The medical records and neonatal charts of all women with a singleton pregnancy, who underwent a trial of labor, at 37 + 0/7 weeks or beyond, between 10/2008 and 7/2018 were revie

A Triplication of 6q24 and Meconium Pseudocyst: A Case Report.

With the rise in genetic screening both pre- and postnatally, new variances in genes are being recognized. Some are of unknown significance, while other known genetic expressions have obvious phenotypical expressions. Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus is a result of the duplication of chromosome 6q24, but little is known about the phenotypic expression of a triplication of chromosome 6q24. This case study presents an infant with a postnatally diagnosed triplication of chromosome 6q24, meconium pseudocyst, and multiple congenital anomalies with unknown genetic significance.

A Rare Case of Meconium Periorchitis Diagnosed in Utero.

Meconium periorchitis is a rare disorder caused by fetal meconium peritonitis, with subsequent passage of meconium into the scrotum via a patent processus vaginalis. To date, clinical significance of meconium periorchitis for the prenatal diagnosis of meconium peritonitis and prediction for postnatal surgery remains to be determined. We present a clinical course of a fetus presenting with meconium periorchitis induced by meconium peritonitis. At 28 weeks' gestation, fetal ultrasonography indicated fetal ascites associated with bilateral hydrocele and peritesticular calcification without other

Issues in the management of simple and complex meconium ileus.

INTRODUCTION: Various surgical methods are used to treat meconium ileus (MI), including resection with enterostomy (RES), primary anastomosis (RPA), and purse-string enterotomy with intra-operative lavage (PSI). The aim of this study is to discuss the surgical treatment of MI, based on our experience. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of the 41 MI patients treated at our institution between 1984 and 2007, 18 had simple MI and 23 had complex MI. These groups were analyzed according to treatment modality, concentrating on length of hospital stay, complications [peritonitis, septicemia, adhesive small bowel

Meconium aspiration syndrome - the experience of a tertiary center.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5 % of infants born with a meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) develop meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). AIM: The aims of this study were to analyse demographic data, morbidity and mortality associated with MAS and to identify possible risk factors. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of newborns with MAS delivered at a tertiary centre from January 1st, 1997 to December 31st, 2008. RESULTS: MAS was responsible for 1.4 % of all Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions, with a trend towards a decreasing incidence during the study duration, especially in th
