Data on medication adherence in adults with neurological disorders: The NeuroGerAd study.

Nonadherence to medication is a common issue that goes along with increased morbidity and mortality and immense health care costs. To improve medication adherence and outcome in ill people, their reasons of not taking their prescribed medication must be known. Here a dataset is presented based on the longitudinal observational NeuroGerAd study in adults with neurological disorders (N = 910). The dataset contains demographic background variables as well as measures of adherence, medication changes after hospital discharge, comprehensive geriatric assessments, personality, patient-physician rela

Alcohol use in Tanzanians with chronic psychotic disorders and poor medication adherence.

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic psychotic disorders (CPDs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is significant. Poorly medically adherent patients are more likely to have worse outcomes and require more resources. However, factors impacting effective treatment of CPD in this population are unclear. AIM: Examine the relationship between alcohol use and disease management and compare alcohol risk stratification between the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) in poorly medication adherent Tanzanians with CPD. SETTING:

Medication Adherence and its Related Factors in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Angioplasty.

Introduction: Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) has no effect on coronary artery atherosclerosis, thus the modification of physiological risk factors seems essential to prevent coronary artery disease (CAD). Then PCI patients have to receive multiple drug therapies in an attempt to prevent the recurrence of cardiac events. In spite of the evidence based on medication adherence to prevent post-PCI CAD development, medication adherence is the main concern for health care system. Accordingly, this study aims to determine the medication adherence and its related factors among these patient

Psychosocial predictors of medication adherence in pediatric heart and lung organ transplantation.

Few studies have identified the psychosocial characteristics of those children and their families associated with future non-adherence to immunosuppressive medications following a heart or lung transplant. UNOS data and medical records information were used to test the association between patient and family psychosocial characteristics and medication adherence. Medication adherence outcomes were obtained using the physician assessments in the UNOS data and measured through patient-level standard deviation scores of immunosuppressive medication blood levels. Complete data were collected on 105

Oral Anticancer Agents: An Intervention to Promote Medication Adherence and Symptom Management
.

Symptom burden and poor adherence to oral anticancer agents remain significant clinical problems. This study examined feasibility, preliminary efficacy, and satisfaction with ADHERE, a nurse practitioner intervention that promotes symptom management and adherence among patients prescribed oral agents. The intervention group (which received one semistructured, face-to-face session followed by three weekly telephone sessions using motivational interviewing, brief cognitive-behavioral therapy, and a toolkit to promote self-management) had significantly lower symptom severity postintervention. Medication adherence and quality of life among the elderly with diabetic retinopathy.

METHOD: one hundred (n=100) elderly outpatients with diabetic retinopathy taking antihypertensives and/or oral antidiabetics/insulin were interviewed. Adherence was evaluated by the adherence proportion and its association with the care taken in administrating medications and by the Morisky Scale. The National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was used to evaluate HRQoL. RESULTS: most (58%) reported the use of 80% or more of the prescribed dose and care in utilizing the medication. The item "stopping the drug when experiencing an adverse event", from the Morisky Scal

Using machine learning to examine medication adherence thresholds and risk of hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement efforts are frequently tied to patients achieving ≥80% medication adherence. However, there is little empirical evidence that this threshold optimally predicts important health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To apply machine learning to examine how adherence to oral hypoglycemic medications is associated with avoidance of hospitalizations, and to identify adherence thresholds for optimal discrimination of hospitalization risk. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 33,130 non-dual-eligible Medicaid enrollees with type 2 diabetes. We randomly selected 90% of the cohort

Enhancing medication adherence in people with schizophrenia: an international programme of research.

This paper describes the development of an adherence therapy intervention in schizophrenia and synthesizes the results to date of a collaborative international programme of research. Sticking to treatment is essential to control symptoms and prevent relapse, but as with other long-term conditions, medication adherence is poor. Adherence therapy seeks to facilitate a process of shared decision making, where both parties work towards agreed goals. Central is the theory that when patients make shared choices with a professional they are more likely to stick with them because they are personally o
