Germline CDKN2A mutations have been described in 25% to 40% of melanoma families from several countries. This paper describes an epidemiological study performed in all centenarians living in Sardinia, a large island located in the Mediterranean sea, 120 Km from the Italian coast. Due to its long-standing isolation, low immigration rate, high endogamy and rather uniform lifestyle, Sardinia offers an ideal setting in which to study the genetic traits associated with extreme longevity and successful aging. A total of 233 potentially eligible centenarians were traced in the entire territory. Of these, 66 died prior to being interviewed, 11 were not found and unknown, and 15 refused to be interviewed.

West Nile virus (WNV) is widely distributed over the world, including Europe, Africa, and Asia and spread over the past two decades to North and South America. This work analyses the activities of Genoese merchant communities in the grain trade in western Mediterranean markets. Our goal is to shed light on their ability to integrate into foreign lands, taking advantage of their privileged position within the Spanish Crown. We report a specimen of an insular black rat (Rattus rattus) from Illa den Colom (Menorca, Western Mediterranean) displaying a singular dental characteristic. It has no molar teeth but displays regular incisors. Its mere occurrence as a regular adult rat is puzzling and we attempted to evaluate what diet and morphological changes in jaw shape were promoted by the total lack of molars, and allowed the successful survival of this specimen. Two approaches were performed: first, bone tissue was analysed to obtain delta(15)N and delta(13)C values in order to estimate dietary preferences of the rat.

Strains of poliovirus type 3 isolated in Finland in 1984 and 1985 (P3/Fin/84) are known to differ considerably from the type 3 vaccine strains in both nucleotide sequence and antigenic properties. In the search for the origin of the outbreak we first tested 80 type 3 strains that had been isolated elsewhere in the world during the years 1953 to 1986. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, intense, and persistent as a result of global warming, posing a growing public health challenge in Mediterranean cities. In Barcelona, this process is characterized by a pronounced increase in nighttime temperatures, amplified by the urban heat island effect and by a rapidly aging population, which together increase vulnerability to heat-related health impacts. This study aims to assess the effects of high temperatures on mortality in Barcelona, with a particular focus on older adults, and to determine the relative importance of nighttime vs. daytime heat.
