Effects of climate factors and Demodex infestation on meibomian gland dysfunction-associated dry eye diseases.

We examined the effects of climatic factors and Demodex infestations on meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)-associated dry eye disease (DED) in a cross-sectional study. This study included 123 patients from Tianjin and Chengdu regions, and climate factors and the Air Quality Index (AQI) were recorded for one year. Ocular surface parameters and Demodex infestations were evaluated using various tests. Significant differences in all climatic factors and AQI were observed between Tianjin and Chengdu (P < 0.01), and ocular surface parameters also differed significantly between the two regions (P < 0.

Cellular senescence promotes meibomian gland dysfunction in a chronic graft-versus-host disease mouse model.

PURPOSE: Aging is a well-established risk factor for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). We previously reported an accelerated cellular senescence phenomenon in the lacrimal glands of a murine model of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Herein, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between cellular senescence and MGD in cGVHD mice, utilizing the senolytic agent ABT-263. METHODS: A cGVHD mouse model was established through allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from B10.D2 to BALB/c mice. Subsequently, cGVHD mice were treated with either ABT-263 or vehicle. The eyelids of recipie

Using machine learning model explanations to identify proteins related to severity of meibomian gland dysfunction.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is the most common cause of dry eye disease and leads to significantly reduced quality of life and social burdens. Because meibomian gland dysfunction results in impaired function of the tear film lipid layer, studying the expression of tear proteins might increase the understanding of the etiology of the condition. Machine learning is able to detect patterns in complex data. This study applied machine learning to classify levels of meibomian gland dysfunction from tear proteins. The aim was to investigate proteomic changes between groups with different severity lev

Shared gene signature between pterygium and meibomian gland dysfunction uncovered through gene-expression meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) are two clinically correlated ocular diseases. We propose to investigate the shared gene signature between pterygium and MGD. METHODS: Microarray datasets were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Initial processing of the data was performed using the R programming package. Gene-expression values were log2 transformed and normalized by quantile normalization. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each individual dataset were analyzed by the limma package. The integration of different pterygium datasets an

Effectiveness of pharmaceutical interventions for meibomian gland dysfunction: An evidence-based review of clinical trials.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is one of the most common ocular disorders encountered by ophthalmologists and is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye. The disease causes significant morbidity in the population such that patients seek treatment. Multiple clinical studies on pharmacological and mechanical interventions for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction have been evaluated. However, there is limited comparative clinical evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions. This review paper aims to report the clinical evidence for pharmaceutical interventions for meibomian gland

Depletion of Cholesteryl Esters Causes Meibomian Gland Dysfunction-Like Symptoms in a Soat1-Null Mouse Model.

Previous studies on ablation of several key genes of meibogenesis related to fatty acid elongation, omega oxidation, and esterification into wax esters have demonstrated that inactivation of any of them led to predicted changes in the meibum lipid profiles and caused severe abnormalities in the ocular surface and Meibomian gland (MG) physiology and morphology. In this study, we evaluated the effects of Soat1 ablation that were expected to cause depletion of the second largest class of Meibomian lipids (ML)-cholesteryl esters (CE)-in a mouse model. ML of the Soat1-null mice were examined using
