Curcumin improves episodic memory in cadmium induced memory impairment through inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and adenosine deaminase activities in a rat model.

Curcumin, the main polyphenolic component of turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes has been reported to exert cognitive enhancing potential with limited scientific basis. Hence, this study sought to evaluate the effect of curcumin on cerebral cortex acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in cadmium (Cd)-induced memory impairment in rats. Animals were divided into six groups (n = 6): saline/vehicle, saline/curcumin 12.5 mg/kg, saline/curcumin 25 mg/kg, Cd/vehicle, Cd/curcumin 12.5 mg/kg, and Cd/curcumin 25 mg/kg. Rats received Cd (2.5 mg/kg) and curcumin (12.5 and 25 m

Content-specific vulnerability of recent episodic memories in Alzheimer's disease.

Endel Tulving's episodic memory framework emphasizes the multifaceted re-experiencing of personal events. Indeed, decades of research focused on the experiential nature of episodic memories, usually treating recent episodic memory as a coherent experiential quality. However, recent insights into the functional architecture of the medial temporal lobe show that different types of mnemonic information are segregated into distinct neural pathways in brain circuits empirically associated with episodic memory. Moreover, recent memories do not fade as a whole under conditions of progressive neurodeg

Reactivation during sleep segregates the neural representations of episodic memories.

Sleep involves the reactivation of recently acquired memories, thereby shaping the neural representations supporting them. An essential feature of episodic memory (i.e., memory for events) is the link between specific elements (e.g., a cake) and the context in which they were embedded (e.g., a birthday party). We investigated how reactivation during sleep impacts item-context binding. Participants (N = 22) formed stories linking together objects in unique contexts. Using functional MRI, we measured the overlap between neural representations for contextually linked objects. During a 90-min nap,

Neurons detect cognitive boundaries to structure episodic memories in humans.

While experience is continuous, memories are organized as discrete events. Cognitive boundaries are thought to segment experience and structure memory, but how this process is implemented remains unclear. We recorded the activity of single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) during the formation and retrieval of memories with complex narratives. Here, we show that neurons responded to abstract cognitive boundaries between different episodes. Boundary-induced neural state changes during encoding predicted subsequent recognition accuracy but impaired event order memory, mirroring a f

Educational attainment mitigates hippocampal-related episodic memory decline in individuals at risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Ageing and Alzheimer's disease lead to declines in the brain region underlying memory for past events (hippocampus), and subsequently in memory for past events (episodic memory). However, some people show considerable adaptability in maintaining cognitive processes despite brain ageing or disease. The cognitive reserve model proposes that individual factors (e.g., higher education) may provide cognitive resilience. We measured whether the expected hippocampal-memory association differs according to educational attainment (a proxy of cognitive reserve). At baseline, 62 older adults (65-88 years

EXPRESS: Forgetting Bliss or Forgetting Gloom: Emotional Fade and Memory Retention in Episodic Future Thinking.

Previous research has found that in healthy individuals, negative emotions fade more quickly in real-life episodic memories, but this phenomenon was not observed in episodic future thinking, nor was valence-related differences found in individuals with anxiety. Experiment 1a compared the sentence completion and experimental recombination paradigms, finding that the sentence completion method elicited future events perceived as more likely to occur and with greater perceived impact, inducing stronger emotions. Experiment 1b used a sentence completion task with a one-month follow-up, but found n

The associations between attentional control, episodic memory, and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers of tau and neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND: While episodic memory decline is the most common cognitive symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD), changes in attentional control have also been found to be sensitive to early AD pathology. The relations between longitudinal trajectories of these specific cognitive domains, especially attentional control, and biomarkers of tau and neurodegeneration have not been thoroughly examined. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether baseline tau positron emission tomography (PET) and cortical thickness, relatively later markers within the AD cascade, predicted cross-sectional and longitudinal changes in

Purpose and meaning in life and the trajectory of episodic memory in eight longitudinal samples.

BACKGROUND: Higher purpose and meaning in life are associated with lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Change in memory over time may be an early indicator of oncoming cognitive impairment and, even in the absence of impairment, memory change is associated with reduced quality of life in older adulthood. Purpose has been associated with better episodic memory performance when measured concurrently; less is known about whether purpose is associated with change in memory over time. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between purpose and declines in memory over time in mul

Brain representations of space and time in episodic memory: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

All experiences preserved within episodic memory contain information on the space and time of events. The hippocampus is the main brain region involved in processing spatial and temporal information for incorporation within episodic memory representations. However, the other brain regions involved in the encoding and retrieval of spatial and temporal information within episodic memory are unclear, because a systematic review of related studies is lacking and the findings are scattered. The present study was designed to integrate the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron

Cortical microstructural changes predict tau accumulation and episodic memory decline in older adults harboring amyloid.

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to assess brain microstructural changes via cortical mean diffusivity (cMD) has been shown to be cross-sectionally associated with tau in cognitively normal older adults, suggesting that it might be an early marker of neuronal injury. Here, we investigated how regional cortical microstructural changes measured by cMD are related to the longitudinal accumulation of regional tau as well as to episodic memory decline in cognitively normal individuals harboring amyloid pathology. METHODS: 122 cognitively normal participants from the Harv

Neural correlates of episodic memory change in increasing age: a longitudinal event-related potential study.

Using a longitudinal design, we examined whether event-related brain potentials (ERPs) correlates of successful episodic memory retrieval varied over a 4-year period according to the level of memory change. ERPs were recorded while participants performed a word-stem cued-recall task, and this procedure was repeated 4 years later. We compared the ERP old/new effect patterns of participants whose memory performance remained stable over time (stable group) with those of participants experiencing episodic memory decline (decline group). The pattern of change of the old/new effect differed between

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Episodic Memory in Older Adults: A Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In the last two decades, the number of intervention studies using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has grown enormously. Though some studies have shown positive influences on episodic memory among older adults, disagreement exists in the literature. Therefore, the current meta-analysis aimed to provide a quantitative assessment of the efficacy of tDCS in modulating episodic memory functions in older adults. METHOD: Eligible studies were sham-controlled trials examining the effects of anodal tDCS on episodic memory in older adults. Twenty-four articles comprising 566

Extradural Motor Cortex Stimulation might improve episodic and working memory in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Electric Extradural Motor Cortex Stimulation (EMCS) is a neurosurgical procedure suggested for treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). We report two PD patients treated by EMCS, who experienced worsening of motor symptoms and cognition 5 years after surgery, when EMCS batteries became discharged. One month after EMCS restoration, they experienced a subjective improvement of motor symptoms and cognition. Neuropsychological assessments were carried out before replacement of batteries (off-EMCS condition) and 6 months afterward (on-EMCS condition). As compared to off-EMCS co

tDCS-induced episodic memory enhancement and its association with functional network coupling in older adults.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) augments training-induced cognitive gains, an issue of particular relevance in the aging population. However, negative outcomes have been reported as well, and few studies so far have evaluated the impact of tDCS on episodic memory formation in elderly cohorts. The heterogeneity of previous findings highlights the importance of elucidating neuronal underpinnings of tDCS-induced modulations, and of determining individual predictors of a positive response. In the present study, we aimed to modulate episodic memory formation in 34 older adults with a

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation over the posterior parietal cortex on episodic memory reconsolidation.

Consolidated memories may return to labile/unstable states after their reactivation, thus requiring a restabilization process that is known as reconsolidation. During this time-limited reconsolidation window, reactivated existing memories can be strengthened, weakened or updated with new information. Previous studies have shown that non-invasive stimulation of the lateral prefrontal cortex after memory reactivation strengthened existing verbal episodic memories through reconsolidation, an effect documented by enhanced delayed memory recall (24 h post-reactivation). However, it remains unknown

Binge drinking during adolescence and young adulthood is associated with deficits in verbal episodic memory.

Binge drinking (BD), a harmful pattern of alcohol consumption, is common during adolescence. Young adults with alcohol use disorders exhibit hippocampal alterations and episodic memory deficits. However, it is not known how these difficulties progress in community BD adolescents. Our objective was to analyze the relationship between BD trajectory and verbal episodic memory during the developmental period spanning from adolescence and to early adulthood. An initial sample of 155 male and female first-year university students with no other risk factors were followed over six years. Participants
