Clinical relevance: The height of the tear meniscus (TMH) is a generally accepted method to evaluate tear film volume, especially in dry eye diagnoses and management. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of different methods to measure tear meniscus height accurately and repeatably. Methods: Lower TMH of 20 volunteers (26.8 ± 5.6 years) was measured by two observers (OI and OII) using optical coherence tomography (OCT), slitlamp microscope image analysis, and with a reticule at low (8x) and high (32x) magnification. TMH was also evaluated by both observers by compari

The meniscal tear treatment paradigm traditionally begins with conservative measures such as physical therapy and referral for operative management for persistent or mechanical symptoms. As a result, the partial meniscectomy is performed more than any other orthopedic procedure in the United States. This treatment paradigm has shifted because recent literature has supported the attempt to preserve or repair the meniscus whenever possible given its importance for the structural integrity of the knee joint and the risk of early osteoarthritis associated after meniscus excision. Choosing an appro

OBJECTIVE: Unenhanced MRI, indirect MR arthrography, direct MR arthrography, and CT arthrography are each currently used to evaluate patients with recurrent knee pain after meniscus surgery. The purpose of this study is to review the evidence for the use of these examinations in patients with suspected recurrent meniscus tear.
CONCLUSION: Direct and indirect MR arthrography are superior to conventional MRI for the assessment of the postoperative meniscus after meniscus repair or partial meniscectomy involving more than 25% of the meniscus.

URPOSE OF THE STUDY The aim of this study was to summarise the current approaches to diagnostics and therapy of the medial meniscus tear, and to evaluate the short-term results of meniscus repair by outside-in and all-inside techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 24 patients who underwent medial meniscus repair for vertical longitudinal tear 10 mm or longer in length localised in the rear two-thirds of meniscus in the red-red or red-white zone at the author's workplace between June 2012 and December 2014. As regards the method, either outside-in or all-inside techniques were used

Discoid meniscus is a congenital variant of the knee joint that typically involves abnormal morphology and potential instability of the lateral meniscus. Some discoid menisci have abnormal peripheral attachments and are unstable. Discoid menisci are prone to tearing secondary to increased thickness, poor tissue quality, and instability. Patients may or may not be symptomatic. Torn or unstable discoid menisci cause mechanical symptoms, pain, and swelling. Symptomatic patients in whom nonsurgical management fails most frequently are treated with arthroscopic surgery. Historically, complete menis

PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of temporal and nasal lid-parallel conjunctival folds (LIPCOF) on the central tear meniscus height (TMH).
METHODS: Tear meniscus height of 40 eyes of 20 subjects (15 female, median age: 39 years) was evaluated by the Tearscope Plus. Temporal and nasal LIPCOF scores were observed by slit lamp (SL) examination. The cross-sectional LIPCOF area (LA) was measured by a modified Scheimpflug camera. Tear meniscus was colored by fluorescein and TM fluorescence (TMF) was evaluated by SL using a 5-grade pictorial scale. Tear meniscus fluorescence was defined by its intensi

BACKGROUND: Anomalies of the meniscus are uncommon. These anomalous formations have been predominately described in the lateral compartment of the knee. Congenital abnormalities of the medial meniscus are rare.
METHODS: Chart and radiographic review of a single patient with a symptomatic congenital abnormality of the medial meniscus.
RESULTS: The patient was a 5-year-old boy with popliteal pterygium who developed painful snapping in the medial knee after anterior hemiepiphyseodesis to improve his knee extension. The patient had achieved full-knee extension from a preoperative 45-degree flexi

Knee joint lesions can be solitary or occur concomitantly with other lower limb abnormalities. Ring-shaped lateral meniscus (RSM) and hypoplasic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are two rare malformations. The therapeutic management of such abnormalities is not consensual, and highly depends on clinical symptomatology. We report a case of a 25-year-old girl with progressive knee pain whose MRI demonstrated a continuous segment of lateral meniscus situated along the medial aspect of the lateral compartment, continuous with the otherwise normal-appearing lateral meniscus, compatible with an RSM.

Meniscal tears are the most common knee injury, and partial meniscectomies are the most common orthopaedic surgical procedure. The injured meniscus has an impaired ability to distribute load and resist tibial translation. Partial or complete loss of the meniscus promotes early development of chondromalacia and osteoarthritis. The primary goal of treatment for meniscus-deficient knees is to provide symptomatic relief, ideally to delay advanced joint space narrowing, and ultimately, joint replacement. Surgical treatments, including meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT), high tibial osteotomy

INTRODUCTION: Calcium crystals exist in the knee joint fluid of up to 65% of osteoarthritis (OA) patients and the presence of these calcium crystals correlates with the radiographic evidence of hyaline cartilaginous degeneration. This study sought to examine calcium deposition in OA meniscus and to investigate OA meniscal cell-mediated calcium deposition. The hypothesis was that OA meniscal cells may play a role in pathological meniscal calcification.
METHODS: Studies were approved by our human subjects Institutional Review Board. Menisci were collected during joint replacement surgeries for

Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) is synthesized and secreted into the synovial fluid by articular chondrocytes and synovial cells, lining the cavity of joints. A thin layer of PRG4 is also present at the articular surface, where it appears to be involved in boundary lubrication. This study investigated if PRG4 is also synthesized and secreted by the cells within meniscus, and if PRG4 is also present in, and at the surface of, meniscus. PRG4 was visualized in sections of bovine calf menisci by immunohistochemistry. PRG4 was detected in two regions: (1) at the femoral and tibial surfaces of the meniscus, a

AIM: Early osteoarthritis of the knee is a common consequence ofA'complete meniscectomy. In order to prevent degenerative changes, meniscus replacement by autogenous quadriceps tendon was performed from 1986 until 1999 in 45 patients. In 29 patients, a reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament was done simultaneously. This study was intended to detect whether this meniscus replacement led to better subjective, clinical and radiological results in comparison to meniscectomised knees or meniscal allografts reported in the literature.
METHODS: A standardised examination of the patients (4

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence rate of meniscus injury in osteoarthritis (OA) of knee joint and inquire into the significance of meniscus injury in diagnosis and treatment of OA.
METHODS: 125 knees of 120 cases with OA as the first diagnosis were observed when debridement was done under arthroscopy. The occurrence rate of meniscus injury and the relationship between the degree of OA and meniscus injury were analyzed. The curative effect of selective joint space debridement with meniscus fitting and resection was evaluated.
RESULTS: Pain was the most common symptom of this group. 32 cases

The combined lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with simultaneous or secondary meniscal tears has severe consequences for the knee joint. By a synopsis of the literature and own experimental investigations in sheep it can be shown that in ACL deficient knees secondary meniscal lesions occur, what finally ends in osteoarthrosis. The combined lesion of the ACL and the meniscus results in a more severe damage of the joint than the sum of the single lesions. ACL reconstruction in these cases is very important, because meniscal tears cannot heal in unstable knees. On the other hand rese

From July 1990 through June 1994, 106 knees (102 patients) were treated for discoid meniscus. Fifteen knees (15 patients) were associated with other intraarticular anatomic variants. There were eight knees (8 patients) with anomalous insertion of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus into the anterior cruciate ligament, and seven knees (7 patients) with anterior expansion of the anterior portion of the anterior cruciate ligament below the anterior tibial margin. Among the latter, one patient also had anterior transposition of the anterior insertion of the medial meniscus, while obliteration

Both ketorolac, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, and morphine, an opioid agonist, provide enhanced patient analgesia after arthroscopic knee surgery when administered via the intraarticular route. This study was designed to determine whether ketorolac or morphine results in better patient analgesia and whether their combination would provide superior analgesia to either drug alone. Patients undergoing arthroscopic knee meniscus repair under local anesthesia with sedation were evaluated. Each of the study groups evaluated received ketorolac (either via the parenteral or intraarticular rout

The fact that a lesion of the knee meniscus presents in ultrasound as a hard, glaring reflection of sound waves is considered to be well established today. Nevertheless, different examiners report variable results. When looking for the reasons for these variations, we tried to determine whether different examination techniques are the cause or the technical equipment used. Thus we ran tests with isolated menisci containing artificial lesions in a waterbath. We found that sound waves falling on the object at an angle of 45 degrees in reference to the meniscal axis provide optimal imaging of the

In a clinical follow-up study the postoperative results after arthroscopic meniscectomies are compared to conventional arthrotomies. 200 selected patients, half treated arthroscopically and half by open meniscectomy are reviewed after a postoperative period of 1.5-4 years. Each patient in the arthrotomy-group is matched with a patient in the endoscopic collective by age, sex and type of meniscus lesion. Ligamentous instability was an excluding criteria. The mean hospital stay in the arthroscopic group is 4.9 days compared to 12.3 days in the arthrotomy-group. At follow-up 46% of the arthroscop

In a clinical follow-up study the postoperative results of 234 meniscus lesions treated by partial arthroscopic meniscectomy are analysed. After a period of 3-12 months 43% of cases were completely free of symptoms, in 50% the operation resulted in a significant relief of symptoms whereas 7% of the patients had unsatisfactory results. Serious intra- and postoperative complications did not occur. Compared to open meniscectomies the hospital stay is considerably shorter with an average duration of 4.7 days. The postoperative short-term result seems not to be related to the presence of degenerati
