The purpose of this study was to understand women's menarche and menstruation-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors across generations. Women ages 18 years and older (Mean = 49.13 ± 14.76 years; Range = 19-78 years) living in South Carolina were recruited to participate in semi-structured interviews during May-November 2016. A total of 70 interviews were conducted, which were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis using open and axial coding techniques from grounded theory provided the framework for data interpretation. Women described vivid menarche memories; however

Menstrual-related hypersomnia (MRH) is a rare disorder consisting of recurrent hypersomnia that is temporally linked with menses. An unusual case of an 18-yearold female with repeated episodes of hypersomnia was referred to a psychiatrist and a neurologist. A review of the literature was done so that an accurate diagnosis could be made, thereby enabling the development of an appropriate treatment plan. Making an effective diagnosis was a challenge because of the similarity of the symptoms of MRH with other psychiatric disorders. As additional clinical features were identified and treatments we

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Owing to the increase in cesarean sections (C-sections) worldwide, long-term complications such as postmenstrual spotting, chronic pelvic pain, and C-section scar ectopic pregnancies have created a new medical era of gynecologic disease. A new type of vaginal repair is evaluated to repair C-section diverticulum (CSD) and rebuild the muscular layer to improve symptoms of abnormal uterine bleeding and decrease the risk of uterine rupture.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study (Canadian Task Force classification II-2).
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS: A total of 121 patien

UNLABELLED: Besides having important hormonal effects, progesterone has depressant and hypnotic effects on the brain. In this study, we compared women in the follicular phase with low progesterone levels and in the luteal phase with high progesterone levels regarding their anesthetic requirements. Twenty patients with menstrual cycle days from 1 to 10 (follicular group) and 20 patients with menstrual cycle days from 18 to 24 (luteal group) were included in the study. Anesthesia was induced with fentanyl and thiopental; relaxation was secured with rocuronium, and anesthesia was maintained with

To investigate the efficacy of two different iron supplements administered either on a weekly basis or during menstruation, a 16-week community experimental study was carried out among postmenarcheal female adolescent students in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Forty eight students received a placebo tablet weekly, 48 other students got an iron tablet weekly and 41 students took an iron tablet for four consecutive days during their menstruation cycle. All subjects were given deworming tablets before supplementation. Haemoglobin, serum ferritin, height, weight, mid-upper arm circumferenc

Women and those who menstruate currently experience health inequalities. Menstruation should be viewed as a vital sign in women of reproductive age and can be useful when assessing overall health. Menstrual parameters should be part of the routine systemic enquiry when taking a history from those who menstruate, regardless of the clinical speciality to which they present. This will facilitate prompt detection and appropriate treatment of those with iron deficiency, a common finding in those who experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. A standardised approach should be used during hist

OBJECTIVE: Primary dysmenorrhea is a common condition that impacts quality of life significantly. Auricular therapies have shown promise for treating primary dysmenorrhea, but there is a lack of evidence specifically for auricular acupuncture (AA). This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of AA for managing primary dysmenorrhea.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized, double-blinded controlled trial was conducted on 90 females with primary dysmenorrhea: an AA group; n = 45) and a sham-AA (SA) group; n = 45. Specific ear acupoints (i.e., Uterus, Endocrine, Shenmen, Subcortex, Liver, and Kidne

The menstrual cycle influences the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis), although the underlying immune contributions are poorly defined. A mouse model simulating the immune-mediated process of menstruation could provide valuable insights into tissue-specific determinants of protection against chlamydial infection within the cervicovaginal and uterine mucosae comprising the female reproductive tract (FRT). Here, we used the pseudopregnancy approach in naïve C57Bl/6 mice and performed vaginal challenge with Chlamydia muridaru

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether particular hormonal patterns could explain the persistence of cyclic menstruation-like bleeding during denied pregnancies.
METHODS: Hormone measurements were performed immediately after delivery in a total of 28 subjects with denied pregnancies. The results were studied in three patient subgroups: subjects with any cyclic bleeding during pregnancy (n = 22), subjects with cyclic bleeding during pregnancy until the delivery date (n = 7) and subjects with amenorrhea (n = 6). These data were compared with those of a control group (n = 126). In some of the women w

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological symptoms vary across the menstrual cycle and may influence well-being and engagement in physical activity. While physical activity may alleviate menstrual pain, fatigue, and mood disturbances, evidence regarding beneficial types, intensities, and timing remains fragmented. This integrative review aimed to synthesise evidence on how physical activity contributes to psychological and physical well-being in menstruating individuals and to identify practically relevant recommendations.
METHODS: An integrative review was conducted using a PIO-based search str

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the establishment of endometriosis, of which retrograde menstruation remains the most widely accepted mechanism of dissemination. However, the mechanisms governing selective lesion establishment remain incompletely understood. Endometriosis affects ∼10% of reproductive-aged women, despite retrograde menstruation occurring in 76%-90% of menstruating individuals. This discordance indicates that menstrual reflux is necessary but insufficient for disease development. We propose that transient, spatially restricted hypoxia functions as a biological g

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterial infections are moderately common clinical entities. They infect the mucosa lining of the antrum and cause pain and inflammation. The exact transmission of H. pylori remains unclear, though fecal-oral and oral-oral routes via contaminated food or water are considered common. Research over the past three decades has linked H. pylori infection to gastric cancer, micronutrient malabsorption, and malnutrition. Iron deficiency anemia is also often linked to H. pylori infection, where absorption is inadequate, or losses exceed absorption, eventually depleting

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among women is lower before the menopause, which may be due to the atheroprotective effects of female sex hormones, including estrogens. This study explored whether women experienced acute coronary syndrome (ACS) more often during menstruation, when the levels of female sex hormones are low.
METHODS: All premenopausal women referred to the local cardiac rehabilitation program after ACS between August 2010 and September 2018 were contacted by telephone to gather information about their menstrual cycle, contraceptive use and whether ACS

OBJECTIVES: Women with sickle cell disease (SCD) are living longer as a result of advances in the care of their underlying disease. With the population growing of women living with SCD, reproductive health issues in this population have become an emphasized area of medical care. We sought to describe current patterns of contraception use, menstruation, and quality-of-life (QOL) measures in women with SCD.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, we administered paper surveys at two academic medical centers to women aged 10 to 55 years with SCD to capture current contraceptive use, chara

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anaemia is highly prevalent among non-pregnant women of reproductive age (menstruating women) worldwide, although the prevalence is highest in lower-income settings. Iron-deficiency anaemia has been associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, which restitution of iron stores using iron supplementation has been considered likely to resolve. Although there have been many trials reporting effects of iron in non-pregnant women, these trials have never been synthesised in a systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To establish the evidence for effects of daily supplementa

Half of female migraineurs in childbearing age use combined oral contraceptives (COCs), but the influence of COCs on perimenstrual migraine is still unclear. We therefore aimed to analyze the risk of occurrence and persistence (i.e. presence for more than 1 day) of headache and migraine before and during menstruation in women with migraine, comparing users of COCs to non-users. We included 184 women with at least 1 day of menstruation recorded in a 90-day diary. We differentiated between (a) the 2 days before menstruation, (b) the first 3 days of menstruation and (c) the remaining days of mens

In contrast with migraine, little is known about the relation between cluster headache and menstrual cycle, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, and menopause. A population based questionnaire study was performed among 224 female cluster headache patients, and the possible effect of hormonal influences on cluster headache attacks studied. For control data, a similar but adjusted questionnaire was sent to healthy volunteers and migraine patients. It was found that menstruation, use of oral contraceptives, pregnancy, and menopause had a much smaller influence on cluster headache attacks than in migra
