Influence of composition of l-menthol-ethanol-water ternary solvent system on the transdermal delivery of morphine hydrochloride.

The influence of concentration of each component in l-menthol-ethanol-water ternary solvent system (MEW system) on the skin permeation of morphine hydrochloride (MPH) was investigated in hairless rats. The cumulative amount of MPH permeated through the excised abdominal skin over 8 h (Q-8) was selected as an index of skin permeability. With changing MPH concentration over a wide range from 0.01 to 10% in a MEW system (5% l-menthol and 40% ethanol), the values of Q-8 were proportional to MPH concentration. The concentration was fixed at 1% for the following experiments. For the effect of the co

Acute topical menthol application and exercise performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis of perceptual and physiological responses.

OBJECTIVES: Topical menthol is increasingly used as a perceptual cooling strategy during exercise, yet its ergogenic potential and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Unlike previous route-mixed meta-analyses, this systematic review and three-level meta-analysis specifically examined the effects of acute topical menthol application on exercise performance alongside perceptual and physiological responses. DESIGN: Meta-analysis. METHODS: Six databases were searched from inception to March 2026. Randomized or controlled trials examining acute topical menthol application during exercise were i

Uncovering the Dual Effect of Menthol and Nicotine Levels in Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems on Pulmonary Surfactant Function.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are now increasingly used, with commercial electronic cigarettes frequently containing high levels of nicotine and menthol, which is a popular flavoring agent. This has raised multiple concerns about the health risks associated with menthol-flavored ENDS. Although menthol and nicotine are known for their individual effects on respiratory health, their combined impact on pulmonary surfactants remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed at understanding the interactions between the primary components of all ENDS liquids (PG and VG), nicotine

Role of the nasal cavity as a perception site of environmental humidity via a menthol-sensitive cold reception mechanism.

Humans can sense environmental humidity; however, the mechanism underlying this ability remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify whether the nasal cavity is involved in humidity sensation. Experiments were conducted on healthy young adults, in which controlled nasal inhalation was conducted under four air conditions (i.e., temperature of 25 °C or 34 °C with relative humidity [RH] of 30 % and 70 %). The temperature of the nasal mucosa and the thermal and humidity sensations of the inhaled air were assessed in the first experiment. In the second and third experiments, sublimated l-menthol wa

Should menthol e-cigarettes be banned? Reaction of adult smokers and users of e-cigarettes to hypothetical bans.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how current smokers using menthol cigarettes or flavoured cigars, and current users of flavoured e-cigarettes may respond to three hypothetical flavour-ban scenarios: (1) banning only menthol cigarettes and flavoured cigars; (2) also banning e-cigarettes with any non-tobacco flavours except menthol; and (3) also banning e-cigarettes with any non-tobacco flavours, including menthol. METHODS: Recruited from mTurk, respondents were asked if they would quit all tobacco-nicotine use or continue or start using products that were still legally available. The pattern

Enhancing the stability, BBB permeability and neuroprotective activity of verbascoside in vitro using lipid nanocapsules in combination with menthol.

Verbascoside (VER) shows promising neuroprotective activity. However, the instability and low permeability in crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) greatly hinder its application. In the present study, verbascoside was encapsulated into lipid nanocapsules (LNC) by reverse micelle (RM) to increase its stability. Besides, we used VER-RM-LNC combined with an envoy drug, menthol, to improve its BBB permeability and neuroprotective activity. VER-RM-LNC was prepared by the phase inversion temperature method, resulting in an encapsulation efficiency of nearly 85 %. The formulated VER-RM-LNC was stab

Menthol Cigarettes, Tobacco Dependence, and Smoking Persistence: The Need to Examine Enhanced Cognitive Functioning as a Neuropsychological Mechanism.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the overall decline in the prevalence of cigarette use in the United States, menthol cigarette use among smokers is rising, and evidence shows that it may lead to more detrimental effects on public health than regular cigarette use. One of the mechanisms by which nicotine sustains tobacco use and dependence is due to its cognitive enhancing properties, and basic science literature suggests that menthol may also enhance nicotine's acute effect on cognition. AIMS AND METHODS: The purpose of this review is to suggest that the cognitive enhancing effects of menthol may be a

Effects of crystalline menthol on blood metabolites in Holstein steers and in vitro volatile fatty acid and gas production.

Fifty-two Holstein steers (573 ± 9.92 kg BW) were used to determine if oral administration of crystalline menthol would induce changes in endogenous secretions of IGF-1 and circulating concentrations of glucose, lactate, and plasma urea nitrogen (PUN). Steers were blocked by BW and assigned within block to treatment. Treatments consisted of 0, 0.003, 0.03, or 0.3% crystalline menthol (DM basis) added to the diet. Animals were housed in individual, partially covered pens equipped with feed bunks and automatic water fountains. On d 1 of the experiment, blood samples were obtained via jugular ven

[Comparative effects of menthol and icilin on the induced contraction of the smooth muscles of the vas deferens of normal and castrated rats].

Non-specific TRPM8 agonist menthol was shown to inhibit voltage- and agonist-evoked contractions of the smooth muscle (SM) of rat vas deferens. Here we compared the action of menthol with the action of more specific TRPM8 agonist icilin on depolarization- (60 mM KCl), carbachol-(CCh) and noradrenalin-(Nor)-evoked contractions of the SM strips from the prostatic and epididymal portions of the vas deferens of normal and castrated (60-137 days) rats. [Menthol in the adjuvant treatment of gallbladder stones fragmented by ESWL as an option for reducing doses of urso- and chenodeoxycholic acid].

BACKGROUND: Assessments of the litholytic activity of terpenes in the conservative treatment of gallstone disease vary. Achievement of a stone-free state through dissolution of residual fragments after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a suitable model for investigating the litholytic activity of menthol. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After ESWL in patients with symptomatic gallbladder stones, the litholytic efficacy of the standard therapy of 125 mg urso-/chenodeoxycholic acid (UDC/CDC) per 25 kg body weight (UDC + CDC) was compared with that of 62.5 mg UDC/CDC plus 125 mg menthol (M)

Stimulation of bitterness by capsaicin and menthol: differences between lingual areas innervated by the glossopharyngeal and chorda tympani nerves.

Capsaicin is viewed as a purely chemesthetic stimulus that selectively stimulates the somatosensory system. Here we show that when applied to small areas of the tongue, capsaicin can produce a bitter taste as well as sensory irritation. In experiment 1, individuals were screened for the ability to perceive bitterness from capsaicin on the circumvallate papillae. Fifteen of 25 subjects who reported at least weak bitterness rated the intensity of taste, irritation and coolness produced by 100-320 microM capsaicin and 100-320 mM menthol applied via cotton swabs to the tip (fungiform region), the

Selective recovery of aroma-active menthol from peppermint hydrosol by wrinkled graphene oxide-based surface molecularly imprinted polymer.

Menthol is the key aroma-active constituent of peppermint essential oil and an important cooling ingredient in food-related applications. During industrial steam distillation, large amounts of peppermint hydrosol are generated as by-products, and appreciable menthol remains in this aqueous stream. However, selective menthol recovery from this complex aqueous matrix is difficult because structurally related compounds with similar polarity coexist with the target molecule. In this study, a surface molecularly imprinted polymer based on micro-wrinkled graphene oxide (WGO) was developed for the se

Menthol preference moderates the relationship between cigarette nicotine content choice and reactions in young adults who smoke infrequently.

BACKGROUND: Half of young adults who smoke use menthol cigarettes, which is associated with continued smoking and greater nicotine dependence. Additionally, early subjective reactions to cigarettes predict future use. Menthol may blunt the sensory effects of nicotine. We investigated the moderating role of menthol on subjective reactions to, and choice of varied nicotine content cigarettes in young adults who smoke infrequently. METHODS: In three counterbalanced, double-blinded sessions, young adults who smoke ≤ 15 days/month smoked fixed doses from very low (VLNC), intermediate (INC), and no

Transcriptomic analysis of tobacco-flavored E-cigarette and menthol-flavored E-cigarette exposure in the human middle ear.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are the most widely used electronic nicotine delivery systems and are designed to imitate smoking and aid in smoking cessation. Although the number of e-cigarette users is increasing rapidly, especially among young adults and adolescents, the potential health impacts and biologic effects of e-cigarettes still need to be elucidated. Our previous study demonstrated the cytotoxic effects of electronic liquids (e-liquids) in a human middle ear epithelial cell (HMEEC-1) line, which were affected by the manufacturer and flavoring agents regardless of the presence

TRPM8 activation by sustained-release menthol mitigates exertional heatstroke-induced testicular injury and sperm ultrastructural damage in rats.

AIMS: Exertional heatstroke (EHS) can induce marked scrotal hyperthermia and impair male reproductive integrity. This study tested whether sustained-release menthol protects against EHS-induced testicular and genitourinary injury via transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) activation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats received sustained-release menthol gel (30 mg·kg-1, subcutaneously) or vehicle for 2 weeks before EHS induction (36 °C, 50% relative humidity; approximately 52 min of treadmill running). Some rats received AMTB, a selective TRPM8 antagonist. Scrotal tempera

Reframing social media discourse following the FDA's menthol ban announcement as industry agenda setting rather than public sentiment.

BACKGROUND: The tobacco industry has spent millions of dollars promoting racialised narratives against the US Food and Drug Administration's recently announced ban on menthol as a characterising cigarette flavour. This research investigates racialised narratives in online discourse following the ban's announcement. METHODS: Tweets and users responding to the April 2022 menthol ban announcement were content analysed to examine the influence of tobacco industry affiliates and potentially organic African-American/Black (AA/B) users. Next we investigated the extent to which the menthol ban was di

MMP12 deficiency attenuates menthol e-cigarette plus house dust-mite effects on pulmonary iron homeostasis and oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the pulmonary effects induced by the inhalation of menthol-flavored e-cigarette aerosols on asthma exacerbation, despite the popularity of these devices and flavors among youth and young adults. In the lungs, matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP12) expressed and secreted by both alveolar macrophages and bronchial epithelial cells plays an essential role in airway remodeling, a key feature of severe asthma. In this study, we investigated the role of MMP12 in menthol-flavored e-cigarette aerosol exposures plus house-dust mite (HDM)-induced asthmatic responses.

Laboratory and field efficacy of terpene combinations (carvacrol, thymol and menthol) against the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of combinations of the terpenes carvacrol, thymol, and menthol on Dermanyssus gallinae under in vitro (direct contact and vapour efficacy assays) and in-use conditions. Combinations investigated in vitro included carvacrol-menthol, thymol-menthol, carvacrol-thymol, and carvacrol-thymol-menthol. Results from contact efficacy studies showed that carvacrol-thymol-menthol was the most efficacious compared to the other combinations (P < 0.05), killing 100 % of the mites when at a concentration of 0.5 μg/mL. Thymol-menthol showed the weakest acaricidal activi

High-Concentration L-Menthol Exhibits Counter-Irritancy to Neurogenic Inflammation, Thermal and Mechanical Hyperalgesia Caused by Trans-cinnamaldehyde.

UNLABELLED: The transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M 8 (TRPM8) agonist L-menthol has been used traditionally for its topical counterirritant properties. Although the use of topical L-menthol for pain is casuistically established, evidence regarding its efficacy is negligible. This study aimed to characterize the effect of L-menthol as a counterirritant on cutaneous pain and hyperalgesia provoked by topical application of the transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily A, member 1 (TRPA1) agonist trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA).
