LP/LIF study of the formation and consumption of mercury (I) chloride: kinetics of mercury chlorination.

The laser photolysis/laser induced fluorescence (LP/LIF) technique has been applied to studies of gas-phase mercury (Hg) chlorination. Mercury (I) chloride (HgCl) was been detected via LIF at 272 nm from reactions of elemental Hg with Cl atoms generated from the 193 nm photolysis of carbon tetrachloride. While the formation of HgCl was too fast to be observed on millisecond time scales, the kinetics of the consumption of HgCl have been determined at temperatures characteristic of post-combustion conditions. Rate coefficients and Arrhenius parameters for the reaction of HgCl with Cl2, HCl and C

Histopathological evidence of inorganic mercury and methyl mercury toxicity in the arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus).

In our sustained effort to understand mechanisms of mercury toxicity in fish, the histopathological effects of a 96-h acute exposure to water-borne inorganic mercury (inorganic Hg) (15 micro gL(-1)), as well as those of a single dietary dose of inorganic and methyl mercury (methyl Hg) (0.260.05 micro g.Hgg(-1) body weight), over 30 days were examined. Samples of gills, olfactory epithelium, kidneys, and liver of arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, were studied using light and electron microscopy. The distribution of dietary inorganic and methyl Hg in the intestinal epithelium was determined usin

Metabolism of mercury in hamster pups administered a single dose of 203Hg-labeled methyl mercury.

Golden Syrian hamster pups were administered a single subcutaneous dose of 203Hg-labeled methyl mercury (MeHg), 0.4 nmol/g body weight, seven days after birth, and were sacrificed 2, 7, 14, 21 or 28 days later. The excretion of 203Hg followed a biphasic elimination pattern with an average half-time of 8.7 days for the rapid component. The slow component had a much longer half-time and probably reflects binding of 203Hg to growing hair. The concentration of 203Hg in the liver, kidneys and brain two days after administration was 0.44, 0.38 and 0.19 nmol/g, respectively. The retention of 203Hg wa

[Patch test of mercury compounds and disinfectant solutions and the clinical picture of mercury contact dermatitis].

The results of patch tests with mercury compounds and disinfectant solutions as well as the clinical picture of mercury contact dermatitis are presented and discussed. During the period from Nov. 1983 to Dec. 1986, 686 patients were tested with mercury compounds. During the 13 year period from 1974-1986, 118 patients were tested with disinfectant solutions and 59 patients with mercury contact dermatitis were seen. Among the disinfectant solutions tested, the highest incidence of positive reaction, 11.5%, was obtained with thimersal. Cross sensitization has been shown between mercurochrome and

Constructs, Tape Measures, and Mercury.

This is a Lewinian-field-theory approach to understanding the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in the context of racism to contribute to the debate about whether graduate schools should remove GRE scores from admissions processes. Woo and colleagues (this issue) review the empirical literature on bias from a psychometric perspective. In this commentary, I challenge the definition of the underlying construct measured by the GRE and offer alternative definitions of what is measured. Next, drawing on an analogy from genome-wide association studies, I discuss how genomic models predicting height

Suicidal intoxication with mercury chloride.

PURPOSE: Poisoning with elemental metals and metallic compounds was much more frequent in the past, and was related, among other things, to lifestyle and the lack of appropriate toxicological diagnostics. One example is mercury, which is being gradually eliminated but still has many different applications as a pure metal or in the form of various compounds. The paper presents a case of suicidal poisoning with mercury chloride (corrosive sublimate). METHODS: Forensic and toxicological tests including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were at the Department of Forensic Medic

Toxicity of mercury: Molecular evidence.

Minamata disease in Japan and the large-scale poisoning by methylmercury (MeHg) in Iraq caused wide public concerns about the risk emanating from mercury for human health. Nowadays, it is widely known that all forms of mercury induce toxic effects in mammals, and increasing evidence supports the concern that environmentally relevant levels of MeHg could impact normal biological functions in wildlife. The information of mechanism involved in mercurial toxicity is growing but knowledge gaps still exist between the adverse effects and mechanisms of action, especially at the molecular level. A bod

Mercury toxicity in wildland firefighters.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have shown that significant levels of mercury are being released into the atmosphere by wildland fires throughout the United States. Eagle populations in the western United States are experiencing mercury toxicity in areas where many of these massive fires are occurring. We hypothesized that wildland firefighters exposed to smoke and other contaminates from these extensive fires would also reflect elevated blood levels of mercury. METHODS: Wildland firefighters in the western United States were studied during the summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009. Pre- and post-fire se

Mercury poisoning: a diagnostic challenge.

Clinical features of mercury poisoning are nonspecific, and a detailed history is very valuable. The silvery, shiny appearance of mercury makes it very exciting and attractive for children. The overall half-life of elemental mercury in the body averages approximately 2 months. Chelation therapy with dimercaptosuccinic acid is the treatment of choice if the urine or blood level of mercury is high or the symptoms are profound. Here, we describe a 14-year-old boy with fever, respiratory distress, and body rash. Investigation leading to a diagnosis of mercury poisoning was made only after his moth

Metallic mercury vapour poisoning revisited.

Mercury poisoning was once common in the 19th century. With its declining use, now clinicians and the public in general are often unaware and unsuspecting of mercury toxicity. A 40-year-old woman and her two children were hospitalized with a 1-week history of a generalized lichenoid eruption. Clinical improvement occurred without a diagnosis; however, on returning home, features of acrodynia with digital gangrene developed in the woman, leading to suspicion of heavy metal poisoning. There was no recurrence after moving from their contaminated house.

Mercury exposure and children's health.

Acute or chronic mercury exposure can cause adverse effects during any period of development. Mercury is a highly toxic element; there is no known safe level of exposure. Ideally, neither children nor adults should have any mercury in their bodies because it provides no physiological benefit. Prenatal and postnatal mercury exposures occur frequently in many different ways. Pediatricians, nurses, and other health care providers should understand the scope of mercury exposures and health problems among children and be prepared to handle mercury exposures in medical practice. Prevention is the ke

Dicaesium hexa-mercury hepta-sulfide.

The title compound, Cs(2)Hg(6)S(7), crystallizes in a new structure type that is closely related to that of K(2)Zn(6)O(7). The structure comprises a three-dimensional mercury sulfide network that is composed of channels. These channels, which are along [001], are of two different diameters. The crystal structure contains one Cs, two Hg, and three S atoms in the asymmetric unit. The Cs, one Hg, and one S atom are at sites of symmetry m, whereas a second S atom is at a site of symmetry 2mm. The Hg atoms are bound to the S atoms in both three- and four-coordinate geometries. The caesium cations o

Kawasaki's disease, acrodynia, and mercury.

A superantigen or autoimmunity has been hypothesized to be the main cause of the Kawasaki's Disease but the etiology is unknown. Medical literature, epidemiological findings, and some case reports have suggested that mercury may play a pathogenic role. Several patients with Kawasaki's Disease have presented with elevated urine mercury levels compared to matched controls. Most symptoms and diagnostic criteria which are seen in children with acrodynia, known to be caused by mercury, are similar to those seen in Kawasaki's Disease. Mercury exposure and public health.

Mercury is a metal that is a liquid at room temperature. Mercury has a long and interesting history deriving from its use in medicine and industry, with the resultant toxicity produced. In high enough doses, all forms of mercury can produce toxicity. The most devastating tragedies related to mercury toxicity in recent history include Minamata Bay and Niagata, Japan in the 1950s, and Iraq in the 1970s. More recent mercury toxicity issues include the extreme toxicity of the dimethylmercury compound noted in 1998, the possible toxicity related to dental amalgams, and the disproved relationship be

Molecular mechanisms triggered by mercury.

Mercury is an ubiquitous environmental toxin that causes a wide range of adverse health effects in humans. Three forms of mercury exist: elemental, inorganic and organic. Each of them has its own profile of toxicity. Exposure to mercury typically occurs by inhalation or ingestion. Mercury can be an indoor air pollutant, however industry emission remains the most important source of inhaled mercury. Furthermore, fresh water and ocean fish may contain large amounts of mercury and dental amalgam can be another important source of inorganic and mercury vapor. The present review discusses the curre

Environmental costs of mercury pollution.

Mercury (Hg) has been used for millennia in many applications, primarily in artisanal mining and as an electrode in the chlor-alkali industry. It is anthropogenically emitted as a pollutant from coal fired power plants and naturally emitted, primarily from volcanoes. Its unique chemical characteristics enable global atmospheric transport and it is deposited after various processes, ultimately ending up in one of its final sinks, such as incorporated into deep sediment or bioaccumulated, primarily in the marine environment. All forms of Hg have been established as toxic, and there have been no
