Cytotoxicity of ingredients of various dental materials and related compounds in L2- and A549 cells.

Various ingredients of dental materials and related compounds were tested for cytotoxicity in two alveolar epithelial cell lines (L2 and A549 cells). Release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from cells was measured after incubation with the test substances for time intervals up to 48 h and expressed as percentage of total LDH content of lysed cells. Furthermore, the glutathione content of cells was determined in the nonmalignant L2 cells. Additionally, cell viability was assessed by microscopic examination. The highest cytotoxicity was observed with mercury compounds (methylmercuric chloride and

Direct and indirect actions of HgCl2 and methyl mercury chloride on permeability and chloride secretion across the rat colonic mucosa.

The actions of two mercury compounds, the inorganic HgCl2 and the organic methyl mercury chloride (MeHg), and of CdCl2 on ion transport across the rat colon were studied with the Ussing chamber and the everted sac method. The mercury compounds (5-50 microM), but not CdCl2, administered to the luminal side, induced a large, concentration-dependent increase of tissue conductance (Gt). The transepithelial movement of the extracellular marker, mannitol, was enhanced in the presence of the mercury compounds, indicating that they cause an increase in the permeability of the epithelium. Biopolymer-enhanced delivery of reactive sulfide reagents for in-situ mercury remediation of heterogeneous contaminated soils.

Mercury pollution from natural and anthropogenic sources demands effective remediation. This study focuses on optimizing a chemical stabilization approach using sulfur-containing compounds to create stable mercury sulfide (HgS) and immobilize elemental mercury in polluted soils. We propose using xanthan gum biopolymer to enhance the in-situ delivery of sulfide microparticles, overcoming soil heterogeneities due to its non-Newtonian behavior. Stability tests indicated that increased biopolymer concentration enhances particle stability due to the viscous and shear-thinning behavior of the polyme

Ecological effects, transport, and fate of mercury: a general review.

Mercury at low concentrations represents a major hazard to microorganisms. Inorganic mercury has been reported to produce harmful effects at 5 microg/l in a culture medium. Organomercury compounds can exert the same effect at concentrations 10 times lower than this. The organic forms of mercury are generally more toxic to aquatic organisms and birds than the inorganic forms. Aquatic plants are affected by mercury in water at concentrations of 1 mg/l for inorganic mercury and at much lower concentrations of organic mercury. Aquatic invertebrates widely vary in their susceptibility to mercury. I

Dissolution of metallic mercury in artificial saliva and eleven other solutions.

Dissolution of metallic mercury immersed in various solutions for one, three, seven, and 14 days was investigated by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Solutions used in this study were artificial saliva, compounds of the four groups forming the artificial saliva (inorganic salts, amino acids, vitamins, other organic compounds) wholly or in part, 0.9% NaCl solution (saline solution), Ringer's solution, and distilled water. Artificial saliva showed a level of mercury dissolution seven times higher than that of saline or Ringer's solution. A large amount of dissolution, similar to th

Sources and Toxicity of Mercury in the San Francisco Bay Area, Spanning California and Beyond.

This report synthesizes and evaluates published scientific literature on the environmental occurrence and biomagnification of mercury with emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA), California. Mercury forms various compounds, well known for their toxicity in humans and environmental ecosystems. Elemental mercury is transported and distributed by air, water, and sediments. Through the metabolic processes of algae and bacteria, mercury is converted into organic compounds, such as methylmercury (MeHg), which then bioaccumulates up through trophic levels. In fish, it is found primarily in ske

A review on the distribution of Hg in the environment and its human health impacts.

Exposure to mercury is a silent threat to the environment and human life. It has the potential to harm almost every organ and body system. Mercury compounds are classified in different chemical types such as elemental, inorganic, and organic forms. The most significant source of ingestion-related mercury exposure in humans and animals is the consumption of fish. Long-term exposure to mercury compounds from different sources (e.g., water, food, soil, and air) can lead to toxic effects on skin, cardiovascular, pulmonary, urinary, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems. Mercury toxicity is fo

Surface chemistry of a high-copper dental amalgam.

In amalgam, mercury is intended to take the form of stable intermetallic compounds. Any mercury leakage must therefore come from free mercury not involved in such compounds. Thus, a knowledge of the exact surface chemistry of dental amalgam is necessary if this phenomenon is to be understood. From XPS and EDS analyses, a model of the surface chemistry of amalgam is proposed which fully characterizes all the phases that are present. The data show the surface to have a composition different from that of the bulk, being comprised of a hydrocarbon deposit and adsorbed water covering the intermetal

Chemical state of mercury and selenium in sewage sludge ash based P-fertilizers.

Phosphorus-fertilizers from secondary resources such as sewage sludge ash (SSA) will become more important in the future as they could substitute conventional fertilizers based on the nonrenewable resource phosphate rock. Thermochemical approaches were developed which remove heavy metals from SSA prior to its fertilizer application on farmlands. We analyzed the chemical state of mercury and selenium in SSA before and after thermochemical treatment under different conditions for P-fertilizer production by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. In some incineration plants the

Effects of inorganic mercury and methylmercury on the ionic currents of cultured rat hippocampal neurons.

1. The effects of inorganic Hg2+ and methylmercuric chloride in the ionic currents of cultured hippocampal neurons were studied and compared. We examined the effects of acute exposure to the two forms of mercury on the properties of voltage-activated Ca2+ and Na+ currents and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced currents. 2. High-voltage activated Ca2+ currents (L type) were inhibited by both compounds at low micromolar concentrations in an irreversible manner. Mercuric chloride was five times as potent as methylmercury in blocking L-channels. 3. Both compounds caused a transient increase in th

Histidin as a mercurial poisoning inhibitor.

Histidin has been shown to effectively inhibit coagulation of horse oxyhemoglobin (HbO(2)) modified by mercury(II) ion bound to reactive thiol groups of protein. Kinetic parameters were measured and the histidin-to-mercury binding constant was kinetically estimated. Histidin, as other pharmaceutically acceptable compounds with some mercury-binding capacity, has been suggested to alleviate mercury intoxication conditions.

[Mercury pollution in selected food products in Poland in the context of their health safety].

Mercury is a silvery-white chemically active transition metal without known physiological role. It is also a toxin accumulated in living organisms--especially in the aquatic creatures (fish and shellfish). Mercury compounds are involved in biogeochemical cycles (especially atmospheric and hydrobiologic), and thus they become contaminants of food. Such process is facilitated by the increasing environmental chemization. Toxic effects of mercury compounds result from their high affinity to sulfur (sulfhydryl groups of amino acids), accumulation in parenchymal organs, metallic mercury lipophilicit

Speciation analysis for mercury in gas condensates by capillary gas chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric detection.

A method allowing species-selective determination of atomic mercury, non-polar dialkylated mercury compounds, polar monoalkylated species and inorganic mercury complexes in natural gas condensates was developed. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed as a detection method for capillary gas chromatography and compared with microwave induced plasma atomic emission detection for the analysis of hydrocarbon-rich matrices. The method was based on two consecutive injections allowing comprehensive speciation analysis. First a sample aliquot was diluted with toluene and analysed for

The toxicology of mercury.

The major physical forms of mercury to which humans are exposed are mercury vapor, Hg0, and methylmercury compounds, Ch3HgX. Mercury vapor emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources is globally distributed in the atmosphere. It is returned as a water-soluble form in precipitation and finds its way into bodies of fresh and ocean water. Land run-off also accounts for further input into lakes and oceans. Inorganic mercury, present in water sediments, is subject to bacterial conversion to methylmercury compounds that are bioaccumulated in the aquatic food chain to reach the highest concen

Determination of methyl-, ethyl-, phenyl and total mercury in Neckar River fish.

Methyl-, ethyl- and phenyl mercury, total mercury and fat content were determined in fish fillet of the five different fish species: eel, perch, roach, chub and barbel. The organo mercury compounds were extracted according to a modified Westöö method and determined by using HPLC-cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometrie. Total mercury was determined according to EPA/AOAC. Total mercury in fish tissue varied between 16 and 812 micrograms/kg, methyl mercury between 10 and 770 micrograms/kg. It was found that at least 83% of total mercury is present as methyl mercury. Only a barbel exceeded the

Speciation of mercury excreted in feces from individuals with amalgam fillings.

Investigators established methods for the analysis of total mercury (Hg-total), oxidized mercury and mercury bound to sulfhydryl groups (Hg-S), mercury vapor (Hg0), and mercury from amalgam particles (APs) in fecal samples. Two individuals consumed mercury as a mercury-cysteine complex mercury vapor, and mercury from amalgam particles, and the cumulative excretion of mercury in feces was followed. Investigators found that 80% of the mercury from amalgam particles and mercury bound to sulfhydryl groups was excreted, but only 40% of the mercury vapor was excreted. Speciation of mercury excreted

Alternative to High Pressure Mercury Vapor Lamp for Photo Induced Fluorescence Analytical Methods; Application to the Determination of Pesticides in Water.

The photo-induced fluorescence method is often applied to determine non-native fluorescent compounds. It typically uses UV irradiation from a high pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp to create photo-induced fluorescent compounds, which are then quantified by fluorescence spectroscopy. However, these mercury lamps require a high-voltage power supply and may accidentally induce electric shocks and the release of mercury vapors. As an alternative, we have evaluated in this technical note new UV-C germicidal lamps. These lamps exhibit a higher power at 254 nm and allowed us to obtain a far great

[Mercury as a Global Pollutant and Mercury Exposure Assessment and Health Effects].

Mercury and its compounds are classified into three main groups: metallic mercury (Hg0), inorganic mercury (Hg2+), and organic mercury (methyl mercury: CH3Hg+, etc.). Metallic mercury is the only metal that is liquid at ambient temperature and normal pressure, which readily forms an amalgam with other metals. Therefore, mercury has long been used for refining various metals, and mercury amalgam has been used for dental treatment. Mercury has also been used in measuring instruments such as thermometers, barometers and blood pressure monitors, as well as electric appliances such as lighting equi

Treating high-mercury-containing lamps using full-scale thermal desorption technology.

The mercury content in high-mercury-containing lamps are always between 400 mg/kg and 200,000 mg/kg. This concentration is much higher than the 260 mg/kg lower boundary recommended for the thermal desorption process suggested by the US Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. According to a Taiwan EPA survey, about 4,833,000 cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), 486,000 ultraviolet lamps and 25,000 super high pressure mercury lamps (SHPs) have been disposed of in the industrial waste treatment system, producing 80, 92 and 9 kg-mercury/year through domestic treatment, offshore treatment and ai

[Toxicity of mineral Chinese medicines containing mercury element].

Mineral Chinese medicine is the distinctive part of the Chinese traditional medicine. The mineral Chinese medicines containing mercury elements such as cinnabaris, calomelas and hydrargyri oxydum rubrum are widely applied in the clinical conditions because of their efficacy of sedative, sterilization, removing necrotic tissue and promoting granulation. However, the rationality and security of clinical application are questioned because of the toxic effect caused by mercury compounds. This paper would summarize the efficacy of the mineral Chinese medicines containing mercury element, as well as
