Dimercaptosuccinic Acid: Summary of Evidence.

Dimercaptosuccinic acid, or succimer, is an oral, heavy-metal chelating agent used to treat lead and heavy-metal poisoning. Although the drug is mainly used for the treatment of lead intoxication, initial data has shown encouraging results for the treatment of mercury and arsenic poisoning as well. This article focuses on the use of dimercaptosuccinic acid as a chelating agent and provides some general information on dimercaptosuccinic acid.

Selenium modulated gut flora and promoted decomposition of methylmercury in methylmercury-poisoned rats.

INTRODUCTION: Selenium plays important roles in antagonizing the toxicity of methylmercury. The underlying mechanism for the antagonism between Se and MeHg is still not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: The role of gut flora against the toxicity of environmental contaminants is receiving more and more attention. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of Se against MeHg-poisoning in the modulation of gut flora and the decomposition of MeHg. METHODS: MeHg-poisoned rats were treated with sodium selenite every other day for 90 days. Fecal samples were collected on Day 8, 30, 60 and 9

Cytogenetic damage related to low levels of methyl mercury contamination in the Brazilian Amazon.

The mercury rejected in the water system, from mining operations and lixiviation of soils after deforestation, is considered to be the main contributors to the contamination of the ecosystem in the Amazon Basin. The objectives of the present study were to examine cytogenetic functions in peripheral lymphocytes within a population living on the banks of the Tapajós River with respect to methylmercury (MeHg) contamination, using hair mercury as a biological indicator of exposure. Our investigation shows a clear relation between methylmercury contamination and cytogenetic damage in lymphocytes at

Heavy metals in soft tissue of white-tailed eagles found dead or moribund in Germany and Austria from 1993 to 2000.

Residues of the potentially toxic metals lead, mercury, and cadmium were analyzed in liver and kidney tissue of 61 free-ranging white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) found dead or moribund in Germany and Austria between 1993 and 2000. Highest values and the widest range were detected for lead in liver and for mercury in kidney tissue. Lead concentrations considered to induce lethal lead poisoning (>5 ppm wet wt) were determined in 28% of liver samples. Lead fragments were detected it the gizzards of two specimens, presumably having died from lead intoxication. Histopathological findings i

Poisoning due to household products: A ten years retrospective analysis of telephone calls to the National Poisons Information Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Extensive use of different chemicals in various fields and their easy availability has led to an increased incidence of accidental and intentional poisoning in developing countries including India. A diverse range of household products commonly used for domestic purposes comprise pesticides, household cleaners, thermometer mercury, antiseptics, kerosene, paint thinners etc. Any of these products, if misused or mishandled can cause poisoning. In India, the National Poisons Centre (NPIC) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, provides information on management of poisoning to

Neurosyphilis, or chronic heavy metal poisoning: Karen Blixen's lifelong disease.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1490s, the treatment of syphilis has consisted of heavy metals--first mercurial and later arsenic and bismuth preparations. Tabes dorsalis, as described by Duchenne in the 1850s, is made up of various characteristic neurologic symptoms. "Gastric crises," sudden stabbing pains followed by vomiting and diarrhea, was originally included by Duchenne, but later, syphilologists disputed its relevance to syphilis. Poisoning by heavy metals, including mercury, may produce similar pain reactions and tabes-like neurologic symptoms. METHODS: According to an earlier published pathog

Mercury levels along the food chain and risk for exposed populations.

Mercury was not regarded as a pollutant of primary importance until many deaths due to mercury poisoning occurred in the 1950s. More recently, adverse health effects have been documented at relatively low exposure levels, and monitoring data must now be interpreted in this light. The Mediterranean basin has been studied in great detail over the past 20 years because of the anomalous natural presence of mercury. Marine animals of this basin have higher mercury body burdens than the same (or similar) species in the Atlantic. The mercury found in marine organisms is mainly in the form of methyl m

The pathology of arylmercurial poisoning in swine.

To produce arylmercurial poisoning, phenylmercuric chloride (PMC) was administered daily to 30 healthy five week-old piglets for periods of up to 90 days. The dosage used ranged from 0.19 to 4.56 mg of mercury (Hg)/kg. Levels exceeding 2.28 mg Hg/kg daily were moderately toxic. The disease occurring in this intoxication resulted from injury to the kidneys and large intestine. Fetid diarrhea and failure to gain weight were consistent clinical signs. The primary gross lesions were necrotic typhlitis and colitis, and nephrosis. Degeneration and necrosis were found in affected organs. Regeneration

Metal toxicosis in horses.

The ubiquity and stability of metals in the environment make them unique as a pollutant or an essential dietary component. Metals are neither created nor destroyed by chemical processes but are redistributed in the environment. In combination with other elements, metal compounds and alloys are essential materials of the contemporary world. Inappropriate use or distribution in the environment leads to adverse health effects on all biologic systems, including horses. Gastrointestinal upset is a common feature of acute toxicosis with metals in general. Among the metals discussed, arsenic and inor

A whitened face woman with nephrotic syndrome.

Skin whitening cream from developing countries is a recognized source of chronic mercury poisoning. The authors report on a 34-year-old Indonesian domestic helper who presented with nephrotic syndrome secondary to membranous nephropathy. It was subsequently found that she used a skin whitening cream regularly that was found to contain a mercury level of almost 2,000 times above the allowable limit. Her blood and urinary mercury levels were both grossly elevated. Her symptoms improved after she stopped using the cream. However, she returned to her home country before chelating therapy could be

Heavy metal poisoning caused by Chinese folk remedies in psoriasis patients: a retrospective analysis.

Psoriasis, characterized as a chronic relapsing disease with a protracted course, often drives patients to seek relief through Chinese folk remedies (CFR). Nonetheless, the complex compositions of these remedies frequently result in unintended adverse effects, notably various types of heavy metal poisoning. Our study involved an exhaustive collection and analysis of clinical data from psoriasis patients who developed heavy metal poisoning due to CFR usage, admitted to Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from January 2011 to October 2023. Our analysis identified 44 cases of mercury poisoning, 17 of lead

[Erythromelalgia: a familial case. Discussion on the role of mercury].

Erythromelalgia is an acrosyndrome characterized by paroxysmal manifestations associating erythema, local sensations of warmth and pain which improve with exposure to cold. Childhood forms, exceptional and usually primary, are quite severe and particularly resistant to treatment. The search for a causal agent is most often negative and the pathogenesis remains to be determined. We report a case of erythromelalgia observed in a 4-year-old girl, her father and her younger sister. This case was particular due to an association with mercury poisoning. The symptomatology was improved after differen

Quantitative determination of mercury in blood-based DL-cysteine-modified direct mercury analyzer method.

Occupational mercury poisoning is a significant work-related illness due to that mercury vapor and its compounds can enter the human body and cause systemic damage. Therefore, regular blood mercury monitoring is essential for occupationally exposed individuals. Among existing detection methods, mercury analyzers are widely used for direct blood mercury determination. Despite the utility of direct mercury analyser (DMA), their application to blood samples is often compromised by limitations such as method instability and mercury carryover. To address these challenges, this study introduces a DL

A novel multi-functional fluorescent probe for dual-channel detection of SO2 and Hg2+ and dynamic visualization of SO2 fluctuations in vivo upon mercury exposure.

Although there are many drugs used for the treatment of mercury poisoning, it is remains confused that pathological symptoms associated with Hg2+-induced oxidative stress. It is reported that SO2 can be generated as the anti-oxidant, and plays an important role in maintaining redox balance in cells. There has not yet been a study to precisely track the changes in SO2 during mercury ion poisoning. We developed a novel dual-response fluorescence probe (CY-SPH) for respective or successive determination of Hg2+ and SO2 in neutral aqueous media. The nucleophilic addition of HSO3- toward CY-SPH cau

Conservative management of elemental mercury retained in the appendix.

INTRODUCTION: Few cases of mercury sequestration in the appendix appear in the literature. Based on these, both prophylactic appendectomy and non-surgical management have been recommended. We report a case in which a patient with mercury retained in the appendix was managed conservatively without developing mercurialism or appendicitis. CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old man ingested approximately one tablespoon of elemental mercury after an argument with his wife. An initial abdominal radiograph showed mercury in the pylorus of the stomach and a follow-up x-ray at 72 hours showed mercury localized t

Household chemicals--common cause of unintentional poisoning.

Of 4736 poisoning incidents registered in the Poison Control Centre in Zagreb from 1985 to 1999, household chemicals caused 23%. In the group of cleaning products, 11% of poisoning incidents were caused by corrosives, 9% by liquid detergents and 4% by hypochlorite. Organic solvents caused 18% of household chemical poisonings; among them gasoline and thinners were the most frequent. Cosmetics were responsible for 7% of poisoning incidents; the most frequent were hair shampoo, hydrogen peroxide, and acetone. In the group of other chemicals, the most common were ingestion of thermometer mercury a

Subjective symptoms and neurobehavioral performances of ex-mercury miners at an average of 18 years after the cessation of chronic exposure to mercury vapor. Mercury Workers Study Group.

In order to determine if there are any residual effects of long-term exposure to mercury vapor, neurobehavioral tests were given to ex-mercury miners about 18 years after the cessation of mercury exposure. Seventy-six male ex-mercury miners who had been exposed to relatively high concentrations of mercury vapor (over 1.0 mg/m3) and with a past history of mercury intoxication were compared to age (+/- 3 years)-, sex-, and years of education-matched controls. Although the extent of the workers' symptoms caused by mercury poisoning, termed erethismus merculialis, markedly decreased after the cess

Methylmercury: significance of intrauterine and postnatal exposures.

Outbreaks of methylmercury poisoning in Japan and Iraq have demonstrated the sensitivity of the fetus to neurotoxic effects. Based on toxicokinetics and considerations of practicability, the optimal biomarker of methylmercury exposure is the hair concentration, but whole-blood measurements of mercury are also useful. Dose-response relations are still incompletely known, especially concentrating developmental neurotoxicity under conditions of chronic exposure. Available evidence indicates that neurobehavioral dysfunction in children may occur if the maternal mercury concentration in hair is > 6
