Autosomal recessive ataxia, slow eye movements, dementia and extrapyramidal disturbances.

An Arab family with an autosomal recessive form of spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements is reported. Hitherto all the reported cases were either sporadic or of autosomal dominant inheritance. Associated are progressive intellectual impairment and extrapyramidal dysfunction as well as peripheral neuropathy and skeletal abnormalities. Muscle biopsy revealed non-specific mitochondrial abnormalities. The spectrum of eye movement abnormalities is discussed and the literature is reviewed. It is concluded that the hallmark of this syndrome (slow or even absent saccades) is one of a gr

[Spasmodic torticollis, substantiating Manto syndrome, of possible toxic aethiology, with alterations of brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEPs). Treatment with L-5-hydroxytryptophan. Follow up of 18 months, during which high degree resolution of symptoms and normalization of BAEPs took place].

A case of very severe spasmodic torticollis observed for 18 months is presented and discussed. Head was so rotated that permitted only backward seeing and compressed brachial plexus between scaleni muscles with sensory, motor and trophic troubles in the hand. A toxic aethiology from parathion is likely. Brainstem Acoustic Evoked Potentials (BAEPs) showed in the beginning abnormal responses, especially as refers to waves originating in the mesencephalon. Therapy with L-5-hydroxytryptophan subdued neurological symptoms; a parallel normalization of BAEPs recording was observed. The Authors propos

Aprosencephaly with otocephaly in a lamb (Ovis aries).

Aprosencephaly is a rare condition in veterinary and human medicine characterized by the complete absence of telencephalon and diencephalon. Some cases are accompanied by a facial dysmorphism designated as otocephaly. A stillborn lamb had splanchnocranial anomalies that were classified by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic examination as aprosencephaly and otocephaly. The brain included parts of the cerebellum and brainstem but no telencephalon, diencephalon, or mesencephalon. The cerebellum had a structurally normal cortex with expression of neuronal nuclear antig

[Clinical and developmental aspects of small brain stem hematomas. Contribution of x-ray computed tomography].

In a review of 16 cases, the authors emphasize that small brainstem haemorrhages, diagnosed by CT-scan, can have a good outcome, most often spontaneously. Twelve hematomas were in the pons, four in the mesencephalon. Several clinical features were remarkable: consciousness was not or moderately impaired, focal symptoms and signs predominantly neuro-ophthalmologic were present. Involvement of the cranial nerves and long tracts occurred rarely in isolation. Arterial hypertension was the usual cause (50 p. cent); one normotensive patient with neurological disorders prior to the bleeding had an ar

MR Imaging Diagnosis of Diencephalic-Mesencephalic Junction Dysplasia in Fetuses with Developmental Ventriculomegaly.

Diencephalic-mesencephalic junction dysplasia is a rare malformation characterized by a poorly defined junction between the diencephalon and the mesencephalon, associated with a characteristic butterfly-like contour of the midbrain (butterfly sign). This condition may be variably associated with other brain malformations, including callosal abnormalities and supratentorial ventricular dilation, and is a potential cause of developmental hydrocephalus. Here, we have reported 13 fetuses with second-trimester obstructive ventriculomegaly and MR features of diencephalic-mesencephalic junction dyspl

Minor head trauma and isolated unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia is a syndrome that develops due to a lesion of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. This lesion is mostly caused by multiple sclerosis (usually bilaterally), and only rarely by head injury. A case is presented of unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia as an isolated sequel of minor head trauma, which eventually resolved. A 40-year-old woman with isolated internuclear ophthalmoplegia secondary to closed head trauma with anatomical lesions of the mesencephalon in the region of medial longitudinal fasciculus is described. A minor contusion was detected by magnetic res

Zn and Cu alteration in connection with astrocyte metallothionein I/II overexpression in the mouse brain upon physical stress.

The distribution of metallothioneins I/II in the mouse brain and their specific area distribution upon physical stress were studied. To induce physical stress, groups of mice were subjected to total darkness for different periods (2 weeks, 1 month, and 2 months). The concentration of metallothioneins, evaluated by immunohistochemistry, as well as area-specific protein expression, were found in the following quantitative order: corpus striatum, cerebellum, mesencephalon, hippocampus with fornix, parts of thalamus, and pons. All other brain areas were marginally affected, or even unaffected, in

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in intermediate form of maple syrup urine disease.

An 8-year-old boy with the intermediate variant of maple syrup urine disease is reported. On b = 1000 s/mm2 (heavily diffusion weighted) images of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, there was symmetric high signal in the globus pallidus, mesencephalon, dorsal pons, and nucleus dentatus, consistent with restriction of the mobility of water molecules. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps revealed low ADC values ranging from 0.42 to 0.56 x 10(-3) mm2/s in these regions, compared to those of apparently unaffected regions in the brain parenchyma ranging from 0.63 to 0.97 x 10(-3) mm2/s. Differential effects of GDNF and BDNF on cultured ventral mesencephalic neurons.

Previous studies have shown that brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can enhance the survival of dopaminergic neurons in the ventral mesencephalon (VM). Here we compared several non-survival functions of the two factors in VM neurons in culture. We found that both BDNF and GDNF elicited an increase in the depolarization-induced release of dopamine, but had no effect on GABA release, in the VM cultures. BDNF, but not GDNF, significantly enhanced the expression of the calcium binding protein calbindin and synaptic protein SNAP25. In con

Reciprocal connections between the periaqueductal gray matter and other somatosensory regions of the cat midbrain: a possible mechanism of pain inhibition.

Lectin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase was injected or implanted in crystalline form into various parts of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) in the cat. After varying survival periods, the animals were fixed and the mesencephalon was sectioned and incubated for HRP histochemistry. Outside PAG, labelled cells and terminal labelling were observed in the cuneiform, parabrachial and intercollicular nuclei, in the deep and intermediate gray layers of the superior colliculus, in the anterior and posterior pretectal nuclei and in the nucleus of Darkschewitsch. This study has shown that the regio

Surgical management of arteriovenous malformations that follow the tentorial ring.

In a series of 200 intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) treated surgically, 33 malformations were situated very close to the tentorial incisura. All but one of these AVMs were totally removed. Four operative approaches were utilized in this group of patients: an interhemispheric approach for lesions of the medial hemispheres, splenium of the corpus callosum, and posterior 3rd ventricle; a subtemporal approach to the inferior and medial temporal lobe; a supracerebellar-infratentorial approach to anterodorsal cerebellum and quadrigeminal regions; and a subtemporal transtentorial expos

Characterization of proopiomelanocortin in the snakeskin gourami (Trichopodus pectoralis) and its expression in relation to food intake.

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is the precursor of several hormones involved in physiological systems including feed intake. The snakeskin gourami (Trichopodus pectoralis) POMC complementary DNA (TpPOMC) was cloned and characterized. Phylogenetic analysis showed that TpPOMC was clustered in a major POMC lineage in fish. Analysis of the Ka to Ks ratios for the entire POMC sequence and for each hormonal segment suggested that different POMC-derived peptide segments were subject to different evolutionary pressures. High expression level of TpPOMC was observed in all brain regions, with the highest le

Neuropeptide tyrosine-like immunoreactive system in the brain, olfactory organ and retina of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, during development.

The anatomical distribution of neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY)-like immunoreactivity was investigated in the brain, olfactory organ and retina of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, during development and in juvenile specimens, by using the indirect immunofluorescence and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase methods. In 60 h post fertilization (hpf) embryos, NPY-like immunoreactive cell bodies appeared in the hypothalamus, within the posterior periventricular nucleus. Few positive nerve fibers were found in the hypothalamus and in the tegmentum of the mesencephalon. In 72 hpf embryos, a new group of NPY-like imm

Pattern of synaptophysin immunoreactivity within mesencephalic grafts following transplantation in a parkinsonian primate model.

The majority of investigations into the degree of restoration of neural circuitry following transplantation of the embryonic ventral mesencephalon to the striatum have focused upon the particular neurochemical subtypes of the fibers exchanged between graft and host. Visualization of neurites of specific neurotransmitter type while informative regarding the specificity of graft-host interactions, vastly underrepresents overall synaptogenesis as it may occur in the grafting situation. The present approach of using a molecular marker characteristic of all normal, functional synapses provides broa

Immunocytochemical localization of angiotensinogen in the rat brain.

The distribution of angiotensinogen-like immunoreactivity in the rat brain was investigated using specific antisera against pure rat plasma angiotensinogen in conjunction with the sensitive streptavidin-biotin peroxidase method. Angiotensinogen antisera were shown by radioimmunoassay and Western blotting to recognize angiotensinogen from both rat plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, and to cross-react with des-AI-angiotensinogen (100%) but not with angiotensin I and II, tetradecapeptide, luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, rat albumin and angiotensinogen from eight other species. A spatial transcriptomics comparison of the adult versus metamorphosed axolotl brain.

The Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an established model for studying tetrapod regeneration and development. Notably, axolotls exhibit remarkable brain regeneration as adults, a trait rarely observed in other adult vertebrates. Adult axolotls can undergo metamorphosis, a process that induces dramatic remodeling of multiple organs and is accompanied by a gradual decline in regenerative capacity and lifespan. However, systematic studies on whole-brain cellular dynamics and molecular mechanisms in both adult and metamorphosed individuals remain lacking. Here, we profiled five representat

Neuro-Behçet's syndrome in a patient not fulfilling criteria for Behçet's disease: clinical features and value of brain imaging.

Central nervous system involvement is rarely an initial presenting manifestation of Behçet's disease (BD). We report the case of a 33-year-old man with recurrent attacks of fever, oral mucosal ulcers, deep venous thrombosis, diplopia, vertigo and headache. Sequential brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed fluctuating lesions of the brain stem, mesencephalon and thalamus. F-18-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) revealed hypometabolism at the parieto-occipital cortex at both sides and the brain stem. Treatment with prednisone and cyclosporine A led to a

Transplantation of expanded mesencephalic precursors leads to recovery in parkinsonian rats.

In vitro expansion of central nervous system (CNS) precursors might overcome the limited availability of dopaminergic neurons in transplantation for Parkinson's disease, but generating dopaminergic neurons from in vitro dividing precursors has proven difficult. Here a three-dimensional cell differentiation system was used to convert precursor cells derived from E12 rat ventral mesencephalon into dopaminergic neurons. We demonstrate that CNS precursor cell populations expanded in vitro can efficiently differentiate into dopaminergic neurons, survive intrastriatal transplantation and induce func

Late adult onset of Langerhans cell histiocytosis mimicking glioblastoma multiforme.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) with multiple organ involvement is a rare disorder in adults. Extrapituitary involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) is uncommon. We report the unusual case of a 55-year-old woman presenting with a left-sided hemiataxia-hemiparesis, left hemisensory loss and short-lasting episodes of an alien left hand due to lesions of the internal capsule and the right thalamus, extending into the mesencephalon associated with extensive surrounding edema, without pituitary involvement. The neuroradiological image suggested glioblastoma multiforme. Brain biopsy reve

Late brain stem radionecrosis seventeen years after fractionated radiotherapy.

The appearance of a new lesion several years after radiation treatment for a primary brain tumor may represent different kind of pathologies. We present a 24-year-old patient who suffered from right-sided hemiparesis and ataxic gait with a history of an operation due to left frontoparieal grade II fibrillary astrocytoma and fractioned radiotherapy. His cranial MRI study showed heterogeneous signal intensity of brain stem radionecrosis in the pons spreading through the mesencephalon and left brachium pontis.
