Metal impaction: an unusual cause of dysphagia.

A 41-year-old unemployed construction worker with a background of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease stage 3, previous incisor tooth abscess aged 9, for which he was fitted with metal dentures, underwent a right below knee amputation. Postoperative day 8 he experienced episodes of dysphagia and vomiting postparandial. CT thorax revealed a foreign body in the midline region of the mediastinum. After two failed attempts at endoscopic extraction of the metal denture, the patient underwent surgical extraction of his metal denture.

[Respiratory impairment and metal exposure in a group of 68 industrial welders].

A group of 68 currently employed welders were examined who were exposed to welding fumes either for the whole or for at least half the working day and who used at least two welding processes, which were mainly manual metal arc welding and metal active gas welding, but also metal and tungsten inert gas welding, or oxyacetylene welding. The welders were classified into 3 groups according to the class of materials used, i.e.: 1) only mild and stainless steel; 2) mild and stainless steel and other metals; 3) only other metals. Chronic bronchitis symptoms were observed in 22% of the subjects; signs

Patch testing with sodium tungstate.

Hard metal contains about 90% tungsten carbide. In an investigation of the skin of 853 individuals who are still working or had previously worker in hard metal manufacture, sodium tungstate was included in a patch test with a panel of substances from the environment of the employees. No allergic reactions to tungstate were found. However, irritant pustular reactions appeared in 2.0% of the patch tests. The pustular reactions were often reproducible.

Hard metal interstitial pulmonary disease associated with a form of welding in a metal parts coating plant.

We describe two cases of hard metal pulmonary disease (one fatal) in workers employed in the same area of a metal coating plant using the detonation gun process for applying a durable metal surface to metal parts. In this form of welding, a mixture of powdered metals, including tungsten carbide and cobalt, is heated by ignition of a flammable gas and propelled from the end of the "gun" at high temperature and velocity to form a welded metal coating. This process is done in an enclosed chamber and with each application, large volumes of fine aerosols are created. Inhalation exposure to hard met

Occupational Hand Dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational hand dermatitis is a common work-related disorder of the skin. Prevention and management of this disease is critical to improving workers' quality of life and for occupation-specific retention. RECENT FINDINGS: This is a critical review of the current literature on occupational hand dermatitis. Occupational dermatitis continues to have a high prevalence among workers although the overall incidence may be slowly decreasing. Irritant contact dermatitis due to wet work exposure is the most common cause of occupational hand dermatitis. Healthcare workers, hairdress

Asthma and IgE antibodies induced by chromium and nickel salts.

Metal plating with chromium and nickel has secured an occupational relation with asthma for which an allergic basis has been postulated but not confirmed. A worker who developed de novo asthma after plating with nickel and chromium but not other metals was subjected to inhalational challenge and immunoserologic tests to evaluate this association. He developed acute asthma to chromium sulfate and a biphasic asthma-like response to nickel sulfate. Radioimmunoassays incorporating the challenge materials revealed specific IgE antibodies to the provocative agents but not to another metal, gold, whi

A Review of Biomarkers Used for Assessing Human Exposure to Metals from E-Waste.

Electronic waste recycling presents workers and communities with a potential for exposures to dangerous chemicals, including metals. This review examines studies that report on blood, hair, and urine biomarkers of communities and workers exposed to metals from e-waste. Our results from the evaluation of 19 publications found that there are consistently elevated levels of lead found in occupationally and non-occupationally exposed populations, in both the formal and the informal e-waste recycling sectors. Various other metals were found to be elevated in different exposure groups assessed using
