The Journal of bone and joint surgery. British volume1992eng
The exceptionally high prevalence of diastrophic dysplasia in Finland has enabled us to analyse the foot deformities of 102 patients at their first orthopaedic evaluation and classify 204 feet into five categories. The most common finding (43%) was a foot with tarsal valgus deformity and metatarsus adductus; 37% showed either equinovarus adductus (29%) or equinus (8%) deformities. At the first examination 13% showed metatarsus adductus deformity alone, and 7% were clinically normal. The expression 'club foot', generally used for the foot deformity in diastrophic dysplasia is a misnomer. There

Based on the literature and our own 143 patients the etiopathogenesis and treatment of metatarsus varus are discussed. The exact scientific proof is still lacking, whether there does exist, besides of the congenital mostly severer metatarsus varus, a slight exogen postnatal form with spontaneous healing, without or with a preceding permanent prone position of the infants. A fixed adductus position of the forefoot represents the indication for stepwise correction of the deformity by means of a plaster cast and additional wedging. It is necessary to produce a slight overcorrection including the

The authors concentrate on surgical approach to adduction deformity of the forefoot in children. They follow 42 children surgically treated - 14 for metatarsus varus and 28 for a residual adduction of the forefoot after treatment for pes equinovarus congenitus. In both groups they compare two operations -Lisfranc joint capsulotomy after Heyman-Herndon-Strong and metatarsal osteotomies after Berman-Gartland. The angle of adduction of the axis I. metatarsal compared to longit. axis of talus has been 35 degrees, both surgical approaches corrected the deformity in a satisfying way, but as more rel

Traumatic brain injury has been the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in human beings. One of the most susceptible structures to this damage is the hippocampus due to cellular and synaptic loss and impaired hippocampal connectivity to the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. Thus, hippocampal damage in rodents using a stereotaxic device could be an adequate method to study a precise lesion from CA1 to the dentate gyrus structures. We studied male and female rats and mice, analyzing hindlimb locomotion kinematics changes to compare the locomotion kinematics using the same methodology in r

The distal chevron osteotomy is a well-established technique for correction of symptomatic mild to moderate metatarsus primus varus with hallux valgus deformity. Fixation of the osteotomy ranges from none to bone pegs, Kirschner wires, screws, or absorbable pins. We evaluated one surgeon's (J.K.D.) results of distal chevron osteotomy fixation with a single, nonpredrilled, 1.3-mm poly-p-dioxanone pin and analyzed any differences in patients with unilateral or bilateral symptomatic metatarsus primus varus with hallux valgus deformities. All osteotomies healed without evidence of infection, osteo

The contributions made by metatarsus primus varus, medial subluxation of the navicular, and angulation of the neck of the talus to the residual deformity in treated club feet were assessed from radiographs. Their relation to the appearance of the feet, to the age of the patient, to the results of operations, and to the age at the time of the first operation were investigated. Lateral rotation of the ankle and flattening of the talus were also studied. Medial subluxation of the navicular was found to be the most important factor influencing both the appearance of the feet and the lateral rotati

OBJECTIVES: To show that the modified scarf osteotomy for hallux valgus surgery provides a greater basal contact surface, which results in more stability and less complications for the management of the metatarsus primus varus, and helps define its indications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Longitudinal, ambispective trial conducted between 2005 and January 2012 in patients with hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus, with a statistical analysis using Student's T test to compare the preoperative and postoperative values of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scale.

We used preoperative radiographic and intraoperative anatomic measurements to predict and achieve, respectively, the precise amount of capital fragment lateral translation required to restore anatomic balance to the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Correlation was used to relate the amount of capital fragment translation and operative reduction of the first intermetatarsal angle (IMA), hallux abductus angle (HAA), tibial sesamoid position (TSP), metatarsus adductus angle, and first metatarsal length. The mean capital fragment lateral translation was 5.54 ± 1.64 mm, and the mean radiographic re

Evolution of the terminology applied to the bunion deformity has progressed in parallel with our changing understanding of the deformity itself. Along this path of progression have been multiple terms, sometimes with multiple meanings. Hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus are 2 of the most common terms for the deformity. Although commonly used, these descriptors can have multiple meanings, and inconsistencies in interpretation can lead to confusion. We propose a more detailed terminology to provide a more accurate description of the entire bunion deformity in 3 planes and for both the hal

The modified Mayo procedure corrects valgus deformity of the great toe secondary to osteoarthritis in the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Basal osteotomy of the first metatarsal to correct metatarsus primus varus and to maintain correction of the valgus deformity may be performed simultaneously. We retrospectively reviewed the results in 55 of 70 feet treated by this combined procedure. The average duration of follow-up was 4.2 years (range 0.5-6 years) and the average age at operation was 63 years (range 45-80 years). The results were either very good or good in 82%, moderate in 14%, and poo

We reviewed 63 feet after plain subcapital osteotomy for simultaneous correction of hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus. Results were evaluated clinically and by radiographs and force plate measurements. Eighty-three percent of the patients were satisfied with their surgery. The hallux valgus angle was improved by 9.3 degrees and the intermetatarsal angle by 6 degrees. The osteotomy resulted in a displacement of the metatarsal head in the lateral direction (10 mm) and in the plantar direction (11.3 mm). Normalization of the load distribution on the metatarsal head was achieved in the gro

CASE HISTORY: A 15-year-old female huacaya alpaca (Vicugna pacos) was referred because of a non-weight-bearing lameness (4/4) in the left pelvic limb caused by a grade three open metatarsal fracture. The referring veterinarian treated the fracture with conservative management using bandages, but it progressively evolved to a non-union.
CLINICAL FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: Clinical examination revealed external wounds on the medial and lateral surfaces of the metatarsus. Radiographs confirmed an open, nonarticular, displaced, diaphyseal fracture of the left metatarsus.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Canc

The objective of this study was to establish a standardized protocol to monitor Besnoitia tarandi prevalence and intensity in barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herds by: 1) calculating the relative sensitivity and specificity of the gross visual assessment of four anatomical sites compared with microscopic evaluation, and 2) determining which of four anatomical sampling sites was the most sensitive for detecting B. tarandi cysts by microscopy. Sampled tissues consisted of the conjunctiva of the left eye and skin sections from the rostrum, metatarsus, and thigh from 312 harvested caribo

UNLABELLED: We retrospectively compared crescentic and Mau osteotomies used to treat a total of 39 cases of hallux abductovalgus. Follow-up was possible in 10 of the crescentic cases (mean 228 days) and 24 of the Mau cases (mean 245 days). Preoperatively, the mean first intermetatarsal and hallux abductus angles were 17.5 degrees and 35.4 degrees , respectively, in the crescentic group; and 16.6 degrees and 31.3 degrees , respectively, in the Mau group. Postoperatively, these same radiographic angles were 11.7 degrees and 18.9 degrees , respectively, in the crescentic group; and 9.8 degrees an

Foot deformities may reflect a generalized disorder, especially a neurologic problem; thus, the child should have a brief general examination. Many infantile foot deformities, such as calcaneovalgus, are postural and self-correcting. Metatarsus varus is not referred for treatment until age 2 months and then only if the deformity is moderate or severe. Fixed forefoot equinus and heel varus characterize a clubfoot, which requires immediate treatment. Corrective shoes are not advised as the primary treatment for metatarsus varus or clubfoot but often are prescribed to maintain the corrected posit

Twelve patients who had a total of 18 Mitchell bunionectomies were reviewed to assess the long-term results of the procedure. Although metatarsus varus correction was maintained in all cases, hallux valgus recurred in 11 of the 18 cases. Sixty-seven percent reported complete relief or improvement of preoperative pain. Although lateral metatarsalgia did occur, the most common area of persistent pain remained the first metatarsal. Six of 18 procedures had marked loss of active joint motion, associated with pain and an unsatisfactory result. Of 18 procedures, 11 (61%) were satisfied with the resu
