The role of intestinal flora in the decomposition and faecal excretion of methyl mercury was studied in mice treated with antibiotics. The antibiotics, neomycin sulfate and chloramphenicol, were given to mice in drinking water for six days before intraperitoneal administration of methyl mercuric chloride (MMC), and intestinal microorganisms were thereby reduced. We assessed the impacts of an innovative Hg water treatment system on a small, industrially-contaminated stream in the southeastern United States. The treatment system, installed in 2007, removes Hg from wastewater using tin (Sn) (II) chloride followed by air stripping. A highly enantioselective α-benzoyloxylation of malonic diester has been achieved by phase-transfer catalysis. The reaction of α-monosubstituted tert-butyl methyl malonate with benzoyl peroxide in the presence of aqueous KOH and N-(9-anthracenylmethyl)cinchoninium chloride afforded the corresponding α,α-disubstituted products in generally excellent chemical yields (up to 99% yield) with high enantioselectivities (up to 96% ee). In addition, the utility of this methodology was exhibited by the synthesis of a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist.

The title compound, C(25)H(24)N(2)O(3) was prepared by the reaction of (Z)-2-(1H-indol-3-ylmethyl-ene)-1-aza-bicyclo-[2.2.2]octan-3-one with methyl p-(bromo-meth-yl)benzoate, under phase-transfer catalytic (PTC) conditions using triethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride and 50% w/v aqueous NaOH solution in dichloro-methane. The crystal structure indicates the presence of a double bond with Z geometry connecting the aza-bicyclic and indole groups.

Reaction of nucleoside triphosphates (NTPs) with amines in pyridine mediated by trimethylsilyl chloride produced nucleoside 5'-phosphoramidates in moderate yields without any preprotection of nucleosides and amino acid methyl esters. The reaction pathway is very similar to the mechanism of the RNA capping reaction, DNA or RNA ligation reaction, and catalysis of hydrolases and nucleases involving the formation of covalent enzyme-NMP (nucleoside 5'-monophosphate) intermediates in biological systems, which could provide a valuable clue for the enzymatic reactions.

The tin(IV) atom in the title compound, [Sn(C(8)H(9))(2)Cl(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))], is chelated by the N-heterocycle and bonded to two C atoms and two chloride ions in an SnC(2)Cl(2)N(2) octa-hedral coordination environment with the C atoms trans to each other. The dihedral angles between the heterocycle ring system and the benzene rings of the 4-methyl-benzyl groups are 21.20 (12) and 28.71 (11)°.

An in vivo model to permit the quantitative study of the effects of neurotoxins upon nerve terminal growth has been developed and used in practice to test the ability of methyl mercury chloride, leptophos, ethanol, morphine and acrylamide to inhibit nerve terminal growth.
