Marked obstructive ventilatory impairment and diffusion disturbance were noted in two intravenous methylphenidate (Ritalin) abusers. In one patient, chest radiogram demonstrated pulmonary emphysema accompanied by bullae and atelectasis, and spontaneous pneumothorax was also present. The primary finding in the other patient was interstitial shadows. Both patients began to note dyspnea during exertion after about 10 years of use. Since radiography also disclosed pulmonary emphysema in an ex-companion of Ritalin abuse, and since the onset was at relatively young ages, these pulmonary disorders ar

BACKGROUND: Dexmedetomidine and ketamine have long elimination half-lives in humans and have no clinically approved reversal agents. Methylphenidate enhances dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission by inhibiting reuptake transporters for these arousal-promoting neurotransmitters. Previous studies in rats demonstrated that intravenous methylphenidate induces emergence from isoflurane and propofol general anesthesia. These 2 anesthetics are thought to act primarily through enhancement of inhibitory Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A ) receptors. In this study, we tested the behavior

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by symptoms of inattention or impulsivity or both, and hyperactivity, which affect children, adolescents, and adults. In some countries, methylphenidate is the first option to treat adults with moderate or severe ADHD. However, evidence on the efficacy and adverse events of immediate-release (IR) methylphenidate in the treatment of ADHD in adults is limited and controversial.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and harms (adverse events) of IR methylphenidate for treating ADHD in adults.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of methylphenidate on visual field testing in healthy adults with abnormal visual field results.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, controlled interventional clinical trial comprised all patients who had abnormal visual field test results and normal eye examination and ophthalmic history. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to either the study group or the control group. All patients repeated their visual field testing. Study group patients received a single dose of 10 mg methylphenidate prior to that. The main outcome measures were the percent differe

Brain tissue may serve as a useful supplement to blood in postmortem investigations. However, reference concentrations for central stimulant drugs are scarce in brain tissue. This study involves some frequently used stimulants: amphetamine, cocaine, ephedrine, MDMA and methylphenidate. We present concentrations from brain and blood and brain-blood ratios of the analytes from autopsies. The cases were grouped according to the cause of death: A: The compound solely caused a fatal intoxication. B: The compound contributed to a fatal outcome in combination with other drugs, alcohol or disease. C:

Methylphenidate is a commonly prescribed treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about its adverse effects on the male reproductive system. We report a 20-year-old male patient whose chief complaint was of delayed puberty. He spoke in a high-pitched voice and complained of lack of body hair, impaired libido, inadequate erectile function, chronic fatigue, and low energy. He had been treated with methylphenidate as an infant and had continued treatment for 17 years. On examination, the patient was lean and visibly lacked facial or body hair. He fur

Dopamine (DA) plays an important role in integrative functions contributing to adaptive behaviors. In support of this essential function, DA modulates synaptic plasticity in different brain areas, including the striatum. Many drugs used for cognitive enhancement are psychostimulants, such as methylphenidate (MPH), which enhance DA levels. MPH treatment is of interest during adolescence, a period of enhanced neurodevelopment during which the DA system is in a state of flux. Recent epidemiological studies report the co-abuse of MPH and ethanol in adolescents and young adults. Although repeated M

Methylphenidate (MPH) is a catecholamine transporter blocker, with dopamine agonistic effects in the basal ganglia. Response inhibition, error detection, and its mediating frontostriatal brain activation are improved by MPH in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, little is known about the effects of MPH on response inhibition and error processing or its underlying brain function in healthy individuals. Therefore, this study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and 2 response inhibition tasks in 52 healthy males. Subjects underwent fMRI during a go/n

Two experiments examined the effects of methylphenidate in male and female patients enrolled in an outpatient treatment program for primary cocaine dependence. The first study was a component of a double-blind efficacy trial wherein 57 patients were first tested in a human laboratory for their initial responsiveness to medication. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or methylphenidate treatment and received their first dose in the human laboratory environment before continuing in outpatient treatment. Methylphenidate was given as a 20-mg sustained-release dose (twice dail

The height of young adults who were treated with methylphenidate hydrochloride in childhood because of hyperactivity (average daily dose, 45 mg; duration of treatment, six months to five years) was studied. There was no significant difference in height between the treated patients (n = 61) and controls (n = 99); both groups were at the national US norm in stature. The findings indicated that methylphenidate therapy does not compromise final height, even when it has an adverse impact on children's growth rate during the active treatment phase. A compensatory growth rate, or growth rebound, appe

OBJECTIVES: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a chronic condition, often associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). No medications have been approved for the treatment of CUD, but methylphenidate (MPH) has been explored as a potential candidate. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MPH in patients with CUD with and without ADHD.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we developed a search string for PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and Scopus databases. We included randomized and nonrandomized clinical studies that used MPH in C

OBJECTIVE: ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, seen in children and adolescents, and is often treated with various pharmacological agents, especially methylphenidate. There are differing opinions in the literature regarding the cardiovascular safety of long-term methylphenidate use. Studies suggest that the drug may increase the risk of hypertension, myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmia, sudden cardiac death, cardiomyopathy, heart failure (HF), pulmonary hypertension, and stroke. This study aimed to compare the clinical and echocardiographic characteristics of

Survivors of childhood Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) often report chronic and debilitating neurocognitive late effects. While short-term clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of methylphenidate in improving neurocognitive performance within the early phases of recovery, its effectiveness over longer treatment periods remains largely unexplored. The present systematic review aims to evaluate whether methylphenidate may serve as a beneficial long-term rehabilitative strategy for improving neuropsychological outcomes in childhood ABI. Database searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO,

An elderly man with advanced glioblastoma developed neuro-cognitive deficits that were reversed by methylphenidate. After tumor resection from the right frontal lobe, he received cranial irradiation, temozolomide and Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields). MRI afterwards showed enhancements near the resection cavity and the contralateral frontal lobe. The patient experienced mild executive dysfunction that was not limiting his activities. Adjuvant temozolomide was started along with TTFields. After 2 cycles, his brain MRI showed stable disease, but he exhibited significant executive dysfunction. Met

PURPOSE: To investigate choroidal vascularity in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were not receiving therapy, children with ADHD who were regularly taking methylphenidate (MPH), and healthy controls.
METHODS: The study included three groups: patients with newly diagnosed ADHD without treatment, patients diagnosed as having ADHD who were already being treated with oral MPH, and controls. Both choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal thickness were measured using an enhanced-depth imaging mode of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDIOCT) (Spec

Methylphenidate (MPD) and amphetamine (AMP) are both psychostimulants that are often used to treat behavioral disorders. More recently, it has also been increasingly used illicitly for recreation as well as to improve intellectual performance. Many factors such as age, gender, genetic background, and environment govern the development of behavioral sensitization to MPD and cross-sensitization with other drugs, which are experimental behavioral markers indicating potential of substance dependence and abuse. This study examines the effects of the environment and age when MPD was exposed in adult

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder frequent in childhood. The main symptoms are attention disorder and/or impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. There are different subtypes of ADHD according to the degree of presence of these three symptoms. There are different therapeutic approaches with high proved effectiveness. Methylphenidate, a stimulant that acts through the dopaminergic and adrenergic pathways, is commonly used for the treatment of ADHD. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioural screening instrument internationa

OBJECTIVE: Methylphenidate (MPH) is a first-line treatment option for attention-deficit hyperactive disorder and narcolepsy. MPH is one of the most abused psychostimulants by the adults and young population to stay awake, perform better, or improve concentration. The scanty reports say that the medical users or abusers mostly consider the administration of benzodiazepines to overcome the adverse effects, i.e., mood- and anxiety-related problems associated with MPH chronic abuse. This work aims to study the effect of alprazolam (ALZ) on MPH-associated adverse effects on liver and kidney.
