The effects of x-ray contrast media on signal intensities were studied. Relaxation times of myelographic contrast media were measured. Whereas relaxation times of Amipaque were longer, compared to CSF, the relaxation times of Duroliopaque, Omnipaque und Solutrast were significantly shorter than that of CSF. Therefore, the qualitative and quantitative effects of different contrast media on signal intensities varied. Most notable was the increase of signal intensity on T1-weighted images due to oily contrast media.

In lumbar myelography, early side effects occur in about half the patients examined with modern water-soluble contrast media. At myelography with Amipaque (metrizamide) these reactions are usually minor, and serious adverse reactions are rare. In our own series of 650 consecutive lumbar myelographies with Amipaque there were no serious adverse effects. Minor adverse reactions occurred in 56% of the patients. A consecutive series of 45 cases of diastematomyelia in adults is analyzed. The majority of patients were females with a 3.4:1 female to male ratio. The ages ranged from 19 to 76 with a mean of 37.8 years. The lesion was usually located in the lumbar region. Twenty-two patients with continued, undiagnosed symptoms of low back and sciatic pain for an average of 14 months were assessed. Patients studied had prior negative evaluations, including EMG, CT scanning, and/or metrizamide myelography. Three-level, posterolateral, extradural discography was performed on the side opposite the sciatica. Recent work has suggested that there may be heterogeneity amongst human eosinophils. In order to study this further, blood and tissue eosinophils were separated by density gradient centrifugation in discontinuous gradients of metrizamide. The possible association of spinal dysraphia with scoliotic malformations was studied in 82 children. In order to investigate the pathogenesis of periventricular lucency (PVL) in hydrocephalus, CT scans were performed with monitoring of the epidural pressure in a series of dogs with hydrocephalus induced with kaolin. Spinal dysraphism includes anomalies of midline fusion involving bony, mesenchymal, and neural elements. MR imaging of the spine was performed as the initial imaging technique to determine its role in the evaluation of 31 children when spinal dysraphism was clinically suspected or when radiographs revealed errors of ossification of the posterior elements (spina bifida). In order to investigate the change of the dural tube and radicular sheath after anterior surgery, metrizamide myelography was performed in 32 cases of lumbar disc herniation, 12 of spondylolytic spondylolisthesis, and 9 of degenerative spondylolisthesis. UNLABELLED: A clinical study of computed tomographic myelography with metrizamide was performed in 35 patients operated for cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Computed tomography (CT) is currently the primary and generally the definitive imaging modality for the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of intracranial neoplasms in children.
