Forensic Microbiology: Challenges in Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Sexual assault crimes consist of acts committed without consent and represent a major global issue with serious implications for victims. These acts have both short- and long-term consequences on the physical, mental, and sexual health of victims, with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) being one of the direct outcomes of such crimes. Sexually transmitted infections constitute a serious global public health problem and can lead to severe consequences. These infections may be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites and are transmitted through sexual contact. Some of the most common STIs a

Building a queer- and trans-inclusive microbiology conference.

Microbiology conferences can be powerful places to build collaborations and exchange ideas, but for queer and transgender (trans) scientists, they can also become sources of alienation and isolation. Many conference organizers would like to create welcoming and inclusive events but feel ill-equipped to make this vision a reality, and a historical lack of representation of queer and trans folks in microbiology means we rarely occupy these key leadership roles ourselves. Looking more broadly, queer and trans scientists are systematically marginalized across scientific fields, leading to disparit

Microbiology of septic arthritis in young Auckland children.

BACKGROUND: Kingella kingae is an important cause of septic arthritis in young children, with modern laboratory methods leading to increased detection. Prevalence of this pathogen in New Zealand, where there are high rates of childhood infections due to Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, is not known. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of children <5 years with septic arthritis (without osteomyelitis) at a tertiary children's hospital in Auckland, over 10 years (2005-2014). Data were collected on demographics, microbiology, clinical presentation, investigations and ma

Classification, microbiology and treatment of diabetic foot infections.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common complication of type-1 and type-2 diabetes. About 10-15% of patients with diabetes develop foot ulcers. A validated foot ulcer classification system that will support the development of treatment strategis is necessary for clinicians managing DFUs. More than 10 classification systems have been described by researchers. Another important aspect of the management of DFUs is the proper identification of causative pathogens that trigger infections. While conventional diagnostic methods, such as swabs, cultures and biopsies are more widely used, novel molecu

Renal struvite stones--pathogenesis, microbiology, and management strategies.

Infection stones-which account for 10-15% of all urinary calculi-are thought to form in the presence of urease-producing bacteria. These calculi can cause significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated or treated inadequately; optimal treatment involves complete stone eradication in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. The three key principles of treating struvite stones are: removal of all stone fragments, the use of antibiotics to treat the infection, and prevention of recurrence. Several methods to remove stone fragments have been described in the literature, including the use of ure

Microbiology and outcomes of peritonitis in northern India.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an established treatment modality for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Peritonitis remains a serious complication in PD patients and an important cause of drop-out from the program. Types of pathogens and their drug resistance patterns may determine the outcome of peritonitis. The present study was undertaken to determine the microbiology of peritonitis in PD patients, antibiotic resistance in commonly isolated bacterial pathogens and clinical outcomes. METHOD: We enrolled 211 patients with ESRD undergoing PD who developed peritonitis during 2002 to 2011

Microbiology of the infected recurrent sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus.

The aim of the present retrospective single centre study was to define the changes in the microbiological flora of the recurring sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (PS). Microbiological findings of swab samples of abscess-forming PS from 2000 to 2010 were evaluated. Within this time span, 73 swab samples were taken from primary sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (pPS) and 23 swab samples of patients with recurring sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (rPS). Our results show a statistically significant shift of the bacterial flora towards the gram-positive range (P = 0·029) and a shift with tendency towards
