[Improvement in the hygienic standards for radio-frequency electromagnetic fields in member countries of the COMECON].

The hygienic norms for radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in this country are based on a large number of experimental and industrial studies performed in separate countries and jointly on the CMEA side. Up to 1983 they comprised the widest frequency range in the world - from 60 kHz, 300 GHz, protecting in the best way man. However, these hygienic norms are not perfect: they have steplike frequency dependence, do not include exposure (except at the length of wave under 1 m - microwave range; there are no norms for frequency under 60 kHz, for magnetic field from 1.5 to 30 MHz and from 50-300

Microclimatic conditions and their effects on sheep behavior during a live export shipment from Australia to the Middle East.

The microclimate can potentially impact the health and welfare of livestock exported by ship. Within-pen microclimatic conditions were recorded and the effects of ammonia on sheep behavior investigated on a voyage from Australia to the Middle East. Ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide as well as wet-bulb, dry-bulb, and dew-point temperature and air speed were mapped in 20 open-deck focal pens, with the focus on the behavior and location of a marked sheep in each pen. Air speed was highly variable in most pens, with pockets of high but transient concentrations of ammonia (30.7 to 44.2

Effects of a mattress cover with special airflow technology on the structure and function of the sacral and heel skin during loading: A two-arm exploratory crossover trial.

Prolonged mechanical loading of the skin and underlying soft tissue cause pressure ulceration. The use of special support surfaces are key interventions in pressure ulcer prevention. They modify the degree and duration of soft tissue deformation and have an impact on the skin microclimate. The objective of this randomized cross-over trial was to compare skin responses and comfort after lying for 2.5 h supine on a support surface with and without a coverlet that was intended to assist with heat and moisture removal at the patient/surface interface. In addition, physiological saline solution was

A Narrative Review of Current Knowledge on Cutaneous Melanoma.

Cutaneous melanoma is a public health problem. Efforts to reduce its incidence have failed, as it continues to increase. In recent years, many risk factors have been identified. Numerous diagnostic systems exist that greatly assist in early clinical diagnosis. The histopathological aspect illustrates the grim nature of these cancers. Currently, pathogenic pathways and the tumor microclimate are key to the development of therapeutic methods. Revolutionary therapies like targeted therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors are starting to replace traditional therapeutic methods. Targeted therapy ai

Species diversity of fungal endophytes across a stress gradient for plants.

Foliar fungal endophytes are one of the most diverse guilds of symbiotic fungi found in the photosynthetic tissues of every plant lineage, but it is unclear how plant environments and leaf resource availability shape their diversity. We explored correlations between leaf nutrient availability and endophyte diversity among Pinus muricata and Vaccinium ovatum plants growing across a soil nutrient gradient spanning a series of coastal terraces in Mendocino, California. Endophyte richness decreased in plants with higher leaf nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios for both host species, but increased with s

Analysis of the distribution of the tick Ixodes ricinus L. (Acari: Ixodidae) in a nature reserve of western Germany using Geographic Information Systems.

From May to November 2003, at five selected sites of the 'Siebengebirge', a nature reserve near Bonn, Germany, data on microclimate, pedology, plant sociology and tick abundance were collected weekly and correlated. A total of 2832 host-seeking Ixodes ricinus (2660 nymphs and 172 adults) were collected, with maximal abundance in June and a minor second increase in abundance in August. The spatial and temporal variation in tick abundance was closely related to the air temperature, relative humidity, soil water content and specific vegetation type. Increases in tick abundances in individual habi

La Crosse and other forms of California encephalitis.

The California serogroup viruses are mosquito viruses that cause human infections on five continents. They are maintained and amplified in nature by a wide variety of mosquito vectors and mammalian hosts; they thrive in a remarkably wide variety of microclimates (eg, tropical, coastal temperate marshland, lowland river valleys, alpine valleys and highlands, high boreal deserts, and arctic steppes). In 1993, California serogroup viruses caused 71% of all cases of arboviral illness in the United States, principally La Crosse encephalitis. The 30 to 180 annual cases of La Crosse encephalitis repr

Multiple sclerosis: plaques caused by 2-step demyelination?

Selected studies concerning events at the contour of a progressive plaque are reviewed and an explanation of the subtle changes in periplaque white matter which various investigators have observed on autopsy or biopsy is presented. Recurrent exposure to toxic small molecular weight substances carried by arterial blood and capable of diffusing through the walls of blood vessels cause modification of protein or glycoprotein in the myelin sheath. These then act as allergens (modified native tissue considered as 'nonself' tissue by the immune system) which induce antibody formation (termed allo-au

Head-neck local ventilation mode for long-narrow mine working face.

To improve the thermal health state of workers in mines facing heat hazards and enhance cooling capacity utilization efficiency of mine ventilation, this study proposes a suitable air distribution for mine workers' local cooling, taking into account the characteristics of long-narrow underground space and workers. The suggested air distribution involves harnessing underground cold air jets along with the mine's crossflow (mainstream ventilation) to create a localized safeguard airflow around the worker's head-neck, known as jet ventilation in crossflow (JVIC). The flow visualization experiment

[Strongyloidiasis as a cause of multiorganic failure].

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that has the ability to reproduce within humans, which explains its persistence for many years. It lives in the duodenum and ileum, between the enterocytes, and opens up to the intestinal lumen. Historically it is associated with tropical and subtropical rural areas, but its development has been seen in microclimates that favour the biological cycle. In Argentina, the diagnosis in the Province of Buenos Aires is not common, being more common in northern Argentina. Due to a common disease with atypical presentation, we present the case of a male, 25-year-

Positive associations matter: Microbial relationships drive tick microbiome composition.

Untangling how factors such as environment, host, associations among bacterial species and dispersal predict microbial composition is a fundamental challenge. In this study, we use complementary machine-learning approaches to quantify the relative role of these factors in shaping microbiome variation of the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis. I. scapularis is the most important vector for Borrelia burgdorferi (the causative agent for Lyme disease) in the U.S. as well as a range of other important zoonotic pathogens. Yet the relative role of the interactions between pathogens and symbionts comp

How dryland mammals will respond to climate change: the effects of body size, heat load and a lack of food and water.

Mammals in drylands are facing not only increasing heat loads but also reduced water and food availability as a result of climate change. Insufficient water results in suppression of evaporative cooling and therefore increases in body core temperature on hot days, while lack of food reduces the capacity to maintain body core temperature on cold nights. Both food and water shortage will narrow the prescriptive zone, the ambient temperature range over which body core temperature is held relatively constant, which will lead to increased risk of physiological malfunction and death. Behavioural mod

Removal mechanisms of dew via self-propulsion off the gecko skin.

Condensation resulting in the formation of water films or droplets is an unavoidable process on the cuticle or skin of many organisms. This process generally occurs under humid conditions when the temperature drops below the dew point. In this study, we have investigated dew conditions on the skin of the gecko Lucasium steindachneri. When condensation occurs, we show that small dew drops, as opposed to a thin film, form on the lizard's scales. As the droplets grow in size and merge, they can undergo self-propulsion off the skin and in the process can be carried away a sufficient distance to fr

[The severity rate of accidents in a mechanical plant].

The severity rate of industrial accidents is calculated so as to make possible their statistical processing. The application to the case of a mechanical plant is presented in order to estimate the severity of the industrial accident risk. Such risk increases with the age of the accident victims, with great climatic changes, with the passing of non-stop working hours, and is due above all to limb contusions (the upper are the more affected) as a consequence of struck against or by objects, of the falls of objects and persons, of getting caught between objects and of hitting against stationary o

Decade-Long Warming and Vegetation Change Drive Shifts in Peatland CH4 and CO2 Fluxes via Plant-Soil Feedbacks.

Plant functional types (PFTs) play a critical role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in peatlands. Climate warming and vegetation loss can affect GHG fluxes directly and indirectly by affecting belowground biogeochemical cycling and altering ecosystem-scale carbon dynamics. To assess the long-term impacts of warming and PFT removal on GHG emissions, we conducted a decade-long field experiment in an ombrotrophic peatland. Treatments included passive warming and selective removal of graminoids, ericaceous shrubs, or both, under ambient and warmed conditions. During the growing season, we

Compatibility and Synergistic Effects of Plant Biostimulants and Commercial Entomopathogenic Fungi for Diaphorina citri Pathogenicity.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, is the primary vector of Huanglongbing, a devastating disease threatening global citrus production. While chemical insecticides dominate control strategies, environmental and resistance concerns necessitate sustainable alternatives like Integrated Pest Management. This study evaluated the efficacy of commercial entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) formulations (Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Cordyceps javanica) alone or combined with plant biostimulants (PBS; silicon dioxide and chitosan) across six greenhouse bioassays. Measuring CO2 Concentration and Thermal Comfort in Italian University Classrooms: A Seasonal Analysis.

This study investigates indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in Italian university classrooms, considering seasonal variations. Poor IAQ can impair students' cognitive performance and well-being, making ventilation strategies crucial. The aim is to assess CO2 levels, temperature, and humidity, analyzing their interactions across seasons. A monitoring protocol was applied in three classrooms using NDIR sensors and a microclimate assessment system. Sensors were placed strategically to capture representative data in 20 days in spring and autumn. Results indicate that CO2 levels peaked at

Why do biting horseflies prefer warmer hosts? tabanids can escape easier from warmer targets.

Blood-sucking horseflies (tabanids) prefer warmer (sunlit, darker) host animals and generally attack them in sunshine, the reason for which was unknown until now. Recently, it was hypothesized that blood-seeking female tabanids prefer elevated temperatures, because their wing muscles are quicker and their nervous system functions better at a warmer body temperature brought about by warmer microclimate, and thus they can more successfully avoid the host's parasite-repelling reactions by prompt takeoffs. To test this hypothesis, we studied in field experiments the success rate of escape reaction
