Several types of odours are involved in the location of host animals by tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae), a vector of animal African trypanosomiasis. Host animals' ageing urine has been shown to be the source of a phenolic blend attractive to the tsetse. Nevertheless, limited research has been performed on the microbial communities' role in the production of phenols. This study aimed at profiling bacterial communities mediating the production of tsetse attractive phenols in mammalian urine. Urine samples were collected from African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), cattle (Bos taurus) and eland (Taurotr

This study characterized the protein/peptide profile of venom isolated from the spider Lasiodora sp. (Mygalomorphae, Theraphosidae) found in northeastern Brazil and determined its antimicrobial activity, toxicity against human cells, and hemolytic activity. Protein concentration of the Lasiodora sp. venom was 4.53 ± 0.38 mg/mL. SDS-PAGE showed proteins with molecular masses up to 75 kDa, some of which contained disulfide bridges. RP-HPLC analysis separate at least 12 peaks that were identified by mass spectrometry as peptides U1-theraphotoxin-Lp1a (lasiotoxin-1), U1-theraphotoxin-Lp1c (lasioto

The present study presents synthesis, characterization and first principle studies on metal chelates, (1-12), of sulfonamide-isatin reacted ligands (S1-S3). All the products were evaluated by various physical and spectral (UV, IR, NMR, MS) means. The octahedral geometry for Co+2, Ni+2 and Zn+2, while square planner geometry for Cu+2 chelates were confirmed by their spectroscopic and magnetic data. Their physical chemistry investigation show the ability of aromatic rings to stabilize sulfonamide rings across NH-π interactions at their optimized geometries. The nonlinear optical response for all

Three new cysteine-free venom peptides, which are referred to as Heterin-1, Heterin-2 and Spiniferin, respectively, were identified from the scorpion Heterometrus spinifer. Heterin-1, Heterin-2 and Spiniferin contain 43, 24 and 13 amino acid residues, respectively. Genomic analysis showed that the genomic organizations of the three peptides are consistent with those of the known Na(+), K(+) or Cl(-)-channel specific toxins from scorpions; this suggests that the genes of the cysteine-free and cysteine-rich peptides from scorpions were derived from a common ancestor. Antimicrobial assay demonstr

The time-course of the humoral immune response of female blackflies after a challenge with bacteria, different Onchocerca microfilariae species, bacterial endotoxin and microfilarial extract was investigated. Strong bacteriolytic and growth inhibition activities against the Gram-positive bacterium Micrococcus luteus were induced by all agents. Specific differences were found in activity levels and time-course. Notably the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced a very early, profound bacteriolytic and antibacterial response, which declined within a day after injection. In contrast, the bact

The effect of low doses of ionizing and nonionizing radiation on the radiation response of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae toward ionizing and nonionizing radiation was studied. The wild-type strain D273-10B on exposure to 54 Gy gamma radiation (resulting in about 10% cell killing) showed enhanced resistance to subsequent exposure to UV radiation. This induced UV resistance increased with the incubation time between the initial gamma radiation stress and the UV irradiation. Exposure to low doses of UV light on the other hand showed no change in gamma or UV radiation response of this strain. The

The larvae of Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) thrive in environments rich in decaying organic matter and dead animals, which are often colonized by bacteria. This adaptation suggests the larvae possess antimicrobial substances that provide them with a defense against bacterial infection. The hemolymph from around 200 C. megacephala larvae previously exposed to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (clinical isolate) was collected, purified, and isolated utilizing Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC). Fractions exhibiting antimicrobial prope

Gnotobiotic animal research has expanded markedly over the past decade. Although germ-free animals were first described more than 100 y ago, little evidence-based guidance is available on best operational procedures. A key aspect of gnotobiotic technology is the sterilization of animal enclosures, most commonly flexible vinyl film isolators. The objective of this study was to determine the most effective methods for chemical sterilization of gnotobiotic isolators and associated equipment. As test microbes, we used bacteria from 4 different accidental isolator contaminations that occurred in a

Stimulating or augmenting the innate immune response of insect vectors has been shown to impede or disrupt the development and transmission of eukaryotic pathogens; however, the majority of such studies have utilized model systems and not natural parasite-vector systems. The Culex pipiens complex of mosquitoes functions as a primary urban vector of Wuchereria bancrofti, a causative agent of lymphatic filariasis. To test the effects of immune activation on this vector-parasite interaction, Culex pipiens pipiens from the filariasis-endemic Nile Delta were subjected to bacteria inoculation and su

INTRODUCTION: The vulvar microbiome is adjacent to that of the skin and the vagina and connects microbiomes present on a stratified epithelial barrier to that of a mucosal barrier. Yet, the characterization of the microbiome in the vulvar region of the body is understudied, although dysbiosis in the microbiome of the skin or vagina have been linked to impairments in women's health.
METHODS: To better understand the role of the vulvar microbiome during healthy aging or during presentation of vulvar diseases, we analyzed the vulvar microbiome by shotgun metagenomic sequencing on composition at

Nanotechnology is one of the most recent technologies. It is uncertain whether the production of small-size nanoparticles (NPs) can be achieved through a simple, straightforward, and medicinally active phytochemical route. The present study aimed to develop an easy and justifiable method for the synthesis of Ag, Au, and their Ag/Au bimetallic NPs (BNPs) by using Hippeastrum hybridum (HH) extract, and then to investigate the effects of Ag, Au, and their Ag/Au BNPs as antimicrobial and phytotoxic agents. Ag, Au, and their Ag/Au BNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR spectrosco

UNLABELLED: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death over the world. Although new diagnostic methods have been discovered, new biomarkers of the cancer are still under studying. A human chitinolytic enzyme called chitotriosidase hydrolyzes chitin and chitotrioside substrates. It is specifically expressed by activating macrophages and seems to play a role in the defense against chitinous human pathogens. Recently it has been shown that chitotriosidase may also attend to the inflammatory process. The aim of the study was to determine chitotriosidase activity in serum of patients wit

Alkaline elution has been used for quantitative detection of DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation in unlabeled somatic and germ cells. Both the induction and subsequent repair have been studied for two classes of DNA damage, viz. single-strand breaks (SSB), and base damage (BD) recognized by the gamma-endonuclease activity in a cell-free extract of Micrococcus luteus bacteria. The high sensitivity of the assay permitted the measurement of induction and repair of SSB and BD after in vitro exposure of hamster germ cells in different cellular stages of spermatogenesis (spermatocytes, round and

Leaf and stem endophytic microorganisms play an important role in plant physiology and secondary metabolite biosynthesis of plants, particularly in medicinal plants. Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Nees) is an important medicinal plant with liver-protective, anti-inflammatory, ovicidal, larvicidal, and anti-urolithatic properties. The medicinal activities are due to presence of andrographolides. This study investigated the culture-independent diversity of endophytic bacteria associated with Kalmegh at nursery, vegetative, and flowering stages using a metagenomic approach. The result

The genus Eryngium, belonging to the Umbelliferae family, comprises flowering plants with various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic properties. However, many of these activities lack scientific evaluation. This study aimed to characterize the metabolites and evaluate the antihelmintic, antibacterial, and antibiofilm activities of a methanolic extract derived from the aerial parts of Eryngium billardieri. Metabolite characterization was conducted using LC-MS combined with a computer-assisted structure elucidation method. The extract was tested against six
