Tendon injury produces changes in SSCT and nerve physiology similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in an in vivo rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) remains idiopathic in many cases. Noninflammatory fibrosis of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) within the carpal tunnel is common in CTS, and some clinicians have hypothesized that this fibrosis might be a cause rather than an effect of CTS. An animal model in which to test this hypothesis would be useful. The principal objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a surgical injury on SSCT fibrosis and median nerve function within the carpal tunnel in an in vivo rabbit model. METHODS: Rabbits were sacrificed 12 weeks

Structure-function relationships in mole crickets: Patterns of transition metal allocation among cuticular tools support the metal-prioritization hypothesis.

Transition metals are well known to enrich the cuticle of structural tools among many insect lineages through the formation of metal-ligand coordinated bonds. Investigations that focus on the distribution patterns of metals among different structures, however, are lacking, despite some structural tools hosting different transition metal profiles. Here, we hypothesized that the enrichment of structures with transition metals, including specific metals and their abundances, is contingent on the types of physical forces those structures experience. We used scanning electron microscopy with energy

Robust Dipolar Layers between Organic Semiconductors and Silver for Energy-Level Alignment.

The interface between a metal electrode and an organic semiconductor (OS) layer has a defining role in the properties of the resulting device. To obtain the desired performance, interlayers are introduced to modify the adhesion and growth of OS and enhance the efficiency of charge transport through the interface. However, the employed interlayers face common challenges, including a lack of electric dipoles to tune the mutual position of energy levels, being too thick for efficient electronic transport, or being prone to intermixing with subsequently deposited OS layers. Here, we show that mono

pH sensitive CdS-iron oxide fluorescent-magnetic nanocomposites.

There has been great interest in the use of nanoparticles for imaging, particularly in multimodal applications (e.g., combination of MRI and fluorescence). Yet creating particles with multiple functionalities has been challenging. Here, we report the synthesis of pH sensitive, fluorescent-magnetic, nanocomposites created through a simple aqueous procedure. Separately synthesized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-coated CdS quantum dots were crosslinked using 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPS) as a bifunctional linker to yield CdS-iron oxide conjug

Formation of TPTA-NaCl/KCl Hybrid Nanostructures on Metal Surfaces.

Alkali metal salts, as co-adsorbates, are crucial in regulating the self-assembly of molecules on metal surfaces. In this study, we report the self-assembled hybrid nanostructures formed by alkali metal salts (NaCl, KCl) and 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-4,4',4″-tricarboxylic acid (TPTA) on Ag(111) and Cu(111) by a combined study of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These hybrid structures exhibit distinct differences compared with the self-assembled structures of pure TPTA. Specifically, NaCl preferentially

Moiré-Induced Symmetry Breaking of Charge Order in van der Waals Heterostructures.

Layered materials that stack different lattice symmetries are rare in nature. Misfit layered chalcogenides, which combine square and hexagonal lattices of rocksalt monochalcogenides and transition-metal dichalcogenides, provide a platform to explore how incommensurability and explicit symmetry breaking impact collective electronic phases. Here we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to probe the misfit compounds (MS)1+δTaS2 with M = Pb, Sn and track how the misfit interface reshapes the electronic ground state of the embedded 1H-TaS2 monolayers. Self-Assembly of Isomeric Isosceles Triangle Molecules at the Liquid-Solid Interface.

We report the formation of self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) by isomeric isosceles triangle molecules, dehydrobenzo[14]-annulene ([14]-DBA), and dehydrobenzo[15]-annulene ([15]-DBA) derivatives bearing six decyloxy chains, at the 1-phenyloctane (PO)-graphite interface as investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). [15]-DBA produces a Trimer+Tetramer structure with a surprisingly large unit cell comprising 12 independent [15]-DBA molecules. In contrast, [14]-DBA forms a simple Dimer structure consisting of two [14]-DBA molecules per unit cell. The lowest solute concentrations f

Electronic Structure Modulation via Composition-Preserving Phase Transformations in Metal-Organic Assemblies on the Surface.

Supramolecular self-assemblies based on metal-organic coordination provide a tunable platform for constructing functional nanostructures on surfaces, with potential applications in catalysis, magnetism, and optoelectronics. Rational design of assemblies requires understanding how their electronic structures can be tuned by various factors, such as precursor design and substrate choice. While phase transformations can significantly alter both structural and electronic properties, most reported cases involve changes in chemical composition or bonding configurations. In contrast, systematic studi

On-Surface Synthesis of Isotactic Double-Stranded Corannulene Polymers Steered by Hierarchical Supramolecular Self-Assembly.

On-surface synthesis has revolutionized the construction of functional nanostructures. Thus far, however, the concept of polymer tacticity has remained unexplored in this context. Tacticity impacts polymer properties, which in turn governs polymer applications. An all-syn arrangement of substituents in isotactic polymers, for instance, may lead to highly crystalline, high-strength materials. Thus, specialized methods have been developed involving chiral catalysts or ligands to control polymer tacticity. In this work, we demonstrate that two-dimensional surface confinement of on-surface polymer

Adsorption and reaction of SO2, H2S, and N2O on graphene/silicon(111): Successful quest for a metal-free catalyst-Theory and experiment.

Graphene supported on Si(111) (short Gr/Si) is one of the very few examples of a metal-free carbon catalyst that catalyzes gas-surface reactions. Kinetics measurements indicate dissociation of SO2 and H2S but molecular adsorption of N2O. In addition, spectroscopy revealed adsorbed sulfur after SO2 and H2S adsorption. Experiments were conducted at ultrahigh vacuum conditions, using kinetics techniques [i.e., thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS)], spectroscopy [Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)], and imaging techniques [scanning tunneling microscop

Nickel Intercalation in Epitaxial Graphene on SiC(0001): A Novel Platform for Engineering Two-Dimensional Heterostructures.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials integrated with graphene offer a compelling platform for next-generation spintronic devices. Yet nickel in its 2D form remains largely unexplored, due to fundamental synthesis limitations. Here, we report the controlled intercalation of Ni beneath epitaxial graphene on the Si-face of SiC(0001), achieved through a scalable colloidal nanoparticle deposition route. Chemically synthesized Ni nanoparticles ( ∼ 10 nm diameter) are uniformly deposited onto graphene via immersion in colloidal solution at room temperature; subsequent thermal annealing at 650 ∘

Heteroatom Effects on Quantum Interference in Molecular Junctions: Exploring Perturbation through Multiple Cross-Conjugation.

Understanding how quantum interference (QI) controls charge transport through metal | molecule | metal junctions is central to the progress of molecular electronics. In this work, scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) measurements combined with charge transport calculations have been used to investigate, for the first time, the conductance of single-molecules that combine (i) multiple cross-conjugation points, (ii) nonalternant frameworks, and (iii) heteroatoms in the conductance pathway. The six studied molecules are symmetrical triaryl systems, each containing two terminal 1,

Defect-Mediated Phase Transitions and Structural Dynamics in Single-Layer VSe2.

Atomic-scale elucidation of phase transition pathways in two-dimensional (2D) materials is practically necessary for achieving desired architectures in next-generation devices, yet it remains hindered by insufficient understanding of defect-mediated kinetics. Here, we study the behavior of Se defects in mediating phase transitions in single-layer (SL) VSe2 grown on Au(111), achieved through controlled thermal annealing and selenium (Se) replenishment. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find that the initial SL VSe2 is a 1T phase

Microscopic Observation of the Oligomerization Process of HCOOH Molecules Confined by a 2D Metal-Organic Network on Cu(111).

Porous 2D metal-organic networks (2D-MONs), formed from metal atoms and organic linker molecules on a solid surface, contain various guest adatoms and molecules in their pores as a host thin film. Aggregation of the guest atoms/molecules within the pore results in the formation of a cluster/oligomer, and the size of the cluster/oligomer is controlled by the pore. In this study, the host 2D-MON consists of 1,3,5-tris(pyridyl)benzene molecules and Cu atoms on Cu(111). The guest adsorbates are HCOOH molecules that form 1D zigzag chains by the intermolecular hydrogen bond on Cu(111). By scanning t

Novel mixed self-assembled monolayers of L-cysteine and methanol on gold surfaces under ambient conditions.

In this work, we carried out an experimental and theoretical study on the formation of self-assembled monolayers of L-cysteine molecules on gold surfaces in the presence of methanol as a solvent. We report for the first time L-cysteine and methanol ordered structures forming a mixed self-assembled mono-layer on Au(100) surfaces under ambient conditions. Finger-like ordered structures with a relative height of 0.10-0.20 nm, average width of 2.0 nm and variable lengths were observed using scanning tunneling microscopy under room temperature and ambient pressure conditions. Using X-ray photoemiss

Controlled nanostructuring of a gold film covered with alkanethiol SAM by low energy cluster implantation.

We report on the deposition of gas-phase gold clusters on an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dodecanethiol molecules on a Au(111) surface. This study was performed by means of ambient-conditions scanning tunnelling microscopy. As a result of cluster implantation through the SAM followed by molecular reorganization, clusters are found to be located under the monolayer where they do not diffuse. By comparing with the formation of SAMs on a nanostructured gold surface, we demonstrate that cluster deposition through the organic monolayer can be used to control the patterning of a gold su

Mucin complexes of nanomaterials: first biochemical encounter.

In recent years, the exposure of biological systems to various nanomaterials has become an issue of great public concern. Although living organisms have arrays of biological defense mechanisms against exposure to exogenous compounds, the biochemical mechanisms allowing various nanomaterials to enter the body are not well understood. A unique example of a typical mucosal glycoprotein capable of binding and solubilizing nanomaterials in physiological solution is provided, suggesting a possible route for entry into biological systems.

In situ STM investigation of spinodal decomposition and surface alloying during underpotential deposition of Cd on Au(111) from an ionic liquid.

The electrodeposition and anodic dissolution of Cd on Au(111) in an acidic chloroaluminate ionic liquid (MBIC-AlCl(3), 42 : 58 mol%) have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ STM. In the Cd underpotential deposition region, various nanostructures can be distinguished. At a potential of 0.95 V vs. Al/Al(iii), a transformation from a well ordered AlCl(4)(-) adlayer to a ( radical3 x radical19) superstructure, presumably due to Cd-AlCl(4)(-) coadsorption, is observed. Reducing the potential to 0.45 V, surface alloying of Cd and Au occurs, which is evidenced for the first time by ty

Bioreactive self-assembled monolayers on hydrogen-passivated Si(111) as a new class of atomically flat substrates for biological scanning probe microscopy.

This is the first report of bioreactive self-assembled monolayers, covalently bound to atomically flat silicon surfaces and capable of binding biomolecules for investigation by scanning probe microscopy and other surface-related assays and sensing devices. These monolayers are stable under a wide range of conditions and allow tailor-made functionalization for many purposes. We describe the substrate preparation and present an STM and SFM characterization, partly performed with multiwalled carbon nanotubes as tapping-mode supertips. Furthermore, we present two strategies of introducing in situ

Nanoscale Manipulation of the Local Kondo Effect in an Artificial Heavy-Fermion System.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures based on d-electron materials offer a platform for realizing heavy-Fermion systems with Kondo lattices. However, the nondestructive and reversible manipulation of spins at the nanoscale in 2D heavy-Fermion materials─essential for their application in spintronic devices─remains elusive. In this paper, we successfully manipulate and characterize both spin (Kondo effects) and electronic (charge density wave) degrees of freedom in the 2D heavy-Fermion system of 1T/1H-TaSe2 heterostructure using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS)
