Reaction kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of sulfosalicylic acid using TiO2 microspheres.

The photocatalytic (PC) degradation kinetics of sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) at different pH using TiO2 microspheres were elucidated by modeling. The resultant model had special consideration of adsorption and pH. The adsorption isotherms showed that the LC/MS(2)-identified intermediates were weakly adsorbed on the TiO2 microspheres, thus their adsorption was neglected in the modeling. By contrast, the SSA was significantly adsorbed, thus its adsorption retained as an item in the model. Consequently, a non-first-order model was obtained. Through the modeling, it was elucidated that the reaction r

Preparation and characterization of PLGA microspheres containing a staphylokinase variant (K35R).

AIM: To produce poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres, containing a staphylokinase variant (K35R, DGR) with reduced immunogenecity and antiplatelet aggregation activities, which allowed the preservation of protein stability during both particle processing and drug release. METHODS: DGR-loaded microspheres were fabricated using a double emulsion-solvent evaporation technique. The effects of preparative parameters, such as stirring rate, polymer concentration, and the excipients of both internal and external aqueous phase (W2), on DGR encapsulation efficiency and microsphere charac

Uterine arterial embolization with tris-acryl gelatin microspheres: a histopathologic evaluation.

Uterine artery embolization (UAE) as an alternative to surgery for the treatment of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis uteri became increasingly popular. While the clinical success of this new treatment strategy is without doubt, there is still considerable uncertainty with respect to the morphologic changes induced by UAE. In this study, a total of 173 women were treated with UAE using tris-acryl gelatin microspheres (TGMS), a new particulate spherical embolic agent, for either symptomatic adenomyosis or leiomyoma. Surgical specimens of 8 women who underwent subsequent myomectomy or hysterectom

Organ distribution of cisplatin after intraperitoneal administration of cisplatin-loaded microspheres.

The aim of this study was to clarify the organ distribution of cisplatin (CDDP) after intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of cisplatin-loaded microspheres (CDDP-MS). The distribution of CDDP to normal organs lying in the peritoneal cavity after i.p. administration of CDDP-MS was assessed by comparing with subcutaneous administration to non-cancerous mice. The organ distribution of CDDP after i.p. administration of CDDP-MS shows that CDDP released from microspheres was distributed to the organs lying in the peritoneal cavity and in the retroperitoneum. These are mainly from the systemic circu

Effect of locally delivered minocycline microspheres on markers of bone resorption.

BACKGROUND: Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biomarkers associated with bone resorption may be useful to determine periodontal disease status and response to therapy. The pyridinoline cross-linked carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), a bone-specific degradation product, and interleukin 1-beta (IL-1), a potent bone-resorptive cytokine, have both been associated with periodontal disease activity. Minocycline is a tetracycline derivative possessing antimicrobial effects on periodontal pathogens and inhibitory properties on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) associated with tissue

Production of alginate microspheres by internal gelation using an emulsification method.

Alginate is a natural polysaccharide found in brown algae. Alginates are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries and have been employed as a matrix for the entrapment of drugs, macromolecules and biological cells. Alginate microspheres can be produced by the external or internal gelation method using calcium salts. The addition of calcium chloride solution in the final phase of production of microspheres by external gelation method using an emulsification technique causes the disruption of the equilibrium of the system being stirred, resulting in a significant degree of clumping

Determination of protein loading in biodegradable polymer microspheres containing tetanus toxoid.

Various methods to determine loading of vaccine in biodegradable polymer microspheres encapsulating tetanus toxoid were evaluated. The microspheres were composed of poly (D-lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Dissolution of microspheres in organic solvents such as methylene chloride, chloroform, or dimethyl sulfoxide and extraction of vaccine antigen or total protein with phosphate buffered saline gave variable results which depended upon the characteristics of the microspheres, such as type of polymer, excipients used in the microspheres and formulation conditions

Use of fluorescent latex microspheres to measure coronary blood flow distribution.

Radioactive microspheres have long been in use to measure blood flow distribution to various vascular beds. Their drawbacks are the short half-lives of the radioactive material, the need for appropriate care in handling and disposing of such material, and their relative expensiveness. We investigated the use of fluorescent microspheres as indicators of coronary blood flow distribution in a canine model. Radioactive (125I) microspheres were used as a comparison standard. Four colors of fluorescent microspheres were used: blue, yellow-green, orange, and red, having emission frequencies ranging f

An mRNA microsphere vaccine inhibiting overactivation of DNA sensing mechanisms.

Mutations in cytoplasmic DNA-degrading enzymes can lead to the accumulation of cytoplasmic DNA (cytoDNA), which excessively activates DNA-sensing pathways and exacerbates inflammatory aging. Reducing cytoDNA levels to suppress DNA-sensing mechanisms is therefore critical for treating elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis (EORA). In this study, we constructed Trex1 mRNA loaded lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) via microfluidics and prepared DNase I loaded polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles through oxidative polymerization. These two components were co-encapsulated into methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA)

Injectable hydrogel microsphere-bomb for MRSA-infected chronic osteomyelitis.

Biofilm and bone tissue defect induced by the bacterial infection severely impede chronic osteomyelitis treatment. It is critical to break though the densely and obstinate biofilm so that the target drugs can deliver to the infected bone more effectively. Herein, an acoustically responsive multifunctional hydrogel microsphere-bomb (EMgel) was designed and prepared by microfluidic technology, which could be injected to the focus of bone infection, and blasted into the nidus deeply to destroy the bacterial biofilm matrix barrier under penetrating ultrasound, so the encapsulated natural polypheno

Development of Nanocomposite Microspheres for Nasal Administration of Deferiprone in Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Elevated brain iron levels are characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases. As an iron chelator with short biological half-life, deferiprone leads to agranulocytosis and neutropenia with a prolonged therapeutic course. Its inclusion in sustained-release dosage forms may reduce the frequency of administration. On the other hand, when administered by an alternative route of administration, such as the nasal route, systemic exposure to deferiprone will be reduced, thereby reducing the occurrence of adverse effects. Direct nose-to-brain delivery has been raised as a non-invasive strategy to

CFD simulation of porous microsphere particles in the airways of pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a chronic progressive disease with an extremely high mortality rate and is a complication of COVID-19. Inhalable microspheres have been increasingly used in the treatment of lung diseases such as PF in recent years. Compared to the direct inhalation of drugs, a larger particle size is required to ensure the sustained release of microspheres. However, the clinical symptoms of PF may lead to the easier deposition of microspheres in the upper respiratory tract. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the effects of PF on the deposition of micr

Effect of polymer source variation on the properties and performance of risperidone microspheres.

Owing to their inherent heterogeneity, determination of similarity of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymers is very challenging. The complexity in controlling PLGA characteristics has been recognized as an obstacle to the development of PLGA based long-acting complex drug products (such as microspheres). The objectives of the present study were: (1) to determine minor differences in the physicochemical characteristics (such as inherent viscosity, molecular weight (Mw), monomer ratio (L/G ratio), glass transition temperature (Tg), and blockiness) as well as in the hydrolytic degradatio

Control of silk microsphere formation using polyethylene glycol (PEG).

UNLABELLED: A one step, rapid method to prepare silk microspheres was developed, with particle size controlled by the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG molecular weight (4.0K-20.0KDa) and concentration (20-50wt%), as well as silk concentration (5-20wt%), were key factors that determined particle sizes varying in a range of 1-100μm. Addition of methanol to the PEG-silk combinations increased the content of crystalline β-sheet in the silk microspheres. To track the distribution and degradation of silk microspheres in vivo, 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-coated CdTe quantum dots (QDs) we

Gelatin Microspheres as Vehicle for Cardiac Progenitor Cells Delivery to the Myocardium.

Inadequate cell retention and survival in cardiac stem cell therapy seems to be reducing the therapeutic effect of the injected stem cells. In order to ameliorate their regenerative effects, various biomaterials are being investigated for their potential supportive properties. Here, gelatin microspheres (MS) are utilized as microcarriers to improve the delivery and therapeutic efficacy of cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) in the ischemic myocardium. The gelatin MS, generated from a water-in-oil emulsion, are able to accommodate the attachment of CPCs, thereby maintaining their cardiogenic potent
