Dermatologic surgery : official publication for American Society for Dermatologic Surgery [et al.]2024eng
BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of lower lip defects is challenging because of the functional and aesthetic demands of the lower face. We review the functional and aesthetic outcomes of the Karapandzic-type flaps for reconstructing lower lip defects.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent repair using Karapandzic-type flaps.
RESULTS: Fifty patients with lower lip defects ranging from 20% to 95% (mean 59.2% ± 20%) were included. Eighteen patients (36%) were repaired using a bilateral flap, and 32 (64%) were reconstructed using a unilateral flap design. All patients had preservat

A new method of lower lip reconstruction using a full-thickness cheek island flap based on the facial vessels is described. The functional potential of the method is assessed in six patients. The technique outlined is simple in design and execution. It is capable of total lower lip reconstruction without appreciable microstomia. Other major techniques of lip reconstruction are briefly reviewed.

Microstomic patients may experience a significant limitation in the mandibular opening. The prosthetic rehabilitation of microstomic patients presents difficulties at all stages, from preliminary impressions to prosthetic fabrication. This clinical report described the method of fabrication of sectional denture for patients with microstomia caused by burns. The denture was fabricated in two pieces, and patients inserted and removed the denture easily.

This paper illustrates a syndrome of distal limb deficiency and oral defects in two sibs, a moderately mentally retarded man and his mildly retarded sister. Both have microretrognathia, microstomia, normal tongue, and symmetric severe limb deficiencies. This seems to be a previously undescribed syndrome. The nosology of the different orofacial syndromes associated with distal limb deficiencies is discussed.

Epidermolysis bullosa hereditaria dystrophica (Hallopeau-Siemens) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by extreme bullae formation of skin and mucosa. Typical dystrophic nails and flexion contractures of the joints can lead to deformities. Carious teeth and microstomia caused by scarred contractures of the lips are characteristic of the clinical picture. Depending on the form and severity of epidermolysis bullosa, the anaesthetic and surgical management requires careful planning to avoid unnecessary complications as a result of positioning, anaesthesia or surgery. In cooperation

A patient with oromandibular-limb syndrome, Type II C, hypoglossia-hypodactylomelia, is documented and the pertinent literature critically reviewed. In addition to limb and tongue anomalies the patient had hypognathia, microstomia, absent mandicular permanent incisors, and enamel dysplasia. Her unrelated parents and siblings are normal. Past medical history for drug exposure to the mother during pregnancy was negative.

This article describes a sectional stock tray system developed by the authors for making preliminary impressions. It may be used not only for individual dental arches but also for patients with microstomia or constricted oral openings. This system allows many combinations of right and left tray sizes and forms to be assembled into a well-fitted anatomically-conforming tray in spite of individual anatomic discrepancies.

Case histories of two patients with the whistling face syndrome are presented. The most striking features are microstomia, midface hypoplasia, scoliosis, and retarded growth. Family histories were unremarkable, except possibly in Patient K. B.'s family, where three miscarriages in six pregnancies were noted. Biochemical and chromosome analysis did not reveal obvious changes. The genetics implied a sporadic inheritance pattern.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive dermopathy is a very rare autosomal recessive skin disorder. The typical pathologic findings are striking: microstomia, micrognathia, thin but very tight translucent skin that tears spontaneously, and arthrogryposis multiplex. The mechanisms behind this disease are unknown.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe for the first time a newborn girl with restrictive dermopathy, transposition of the great vessels, and microcolon. She had thin shiny skin with nearly no compliance indicating restrictive dermopathy. Additional dysmorphic findings included enlarged fontanelle, hypertelorism

A newborn male infant born to consanguineous parents was found to have diffuse polymicrogyria associated with an unusual pattern of congenital anomalies including microbrachycephaly, turricephaly, blepharophimosis, microstomia with maxillary retrusion and mandibular prognathism, micropenis with cryptorchidism, camptodactyly and adducted thumbs, and a progeroid appearance. The combination of manifestations in our patient represents a unique form of polymicrogyria with congenital anomalies, probably representing a new syndrome.

Mucormycosis, a rare fungal infection seen in diabetes, is now very frequent owing to the deadly triad of COVID-19 infection, diabetes, and rampant use of corticosteroids. Immediate management revolves around therapeutic drugs like antifungals, antibiotics, and aggressive surgical debridement. The cases described in the article explain prosthetic rehabilitation of maxillectomy defects. The findings focus on prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with acquired maxillectomy defects after mucormycotic necrosis post-COVID-19 infection and the techniques to overcome the complications like lack of su

We report the first observation of parent-to-child transmission of dysgnathia, a rare disorder characterized by severe mandibular hypoplasia or agenesis, ear anomalies, microstomia, and microglossia. Patient 1 was noted prenatally by ultrasound to have severe micrognathia and, after birth, abnormal ears with canal stenosis and non-contiguous lobules located dorsally to the rest of the pinnae, normal zygomata, severe jaw immobility and microstomia with an opening of only 4 to 5 mm, hypoplastic tongue, and cleft palate. The 21-year-old mother of patient 1 was born with severe micrognathia requir

BACKGROUND: Lower lip reconstruction is crucial to restore oral integrity post-cancer excision. A perfect balance between form and function should be achieved. With an aging demographic, adapting surgical methods to meet the unique needs of the elderly becomes imperative. Our study aims to introduce a specialized algorithm for lower lip reconstruction; it was tailored to geriatric patients and emphasized the use of "simpler flaps". Additionally, "Pearls and Pitfalls" were provided for surgeons approaching lower lip reconstruction.
METHODS: Between January 2018 and June 2021, a retrospective s

We report on craniomicromelic syndrome in a male fetus. This case had the previously reported features of prenatal onset growth retardation, underossified cranial bones, wide sutures and fontanels, small face as compared to head, small palpebral fissures, pinched nose, microstomia, micrognathia, and narrow thorax. The consistent combination of these features with short appearing limbs as observed in this case establishes this syndrome as a distinct entity.

The management of trauma to the commissures has been an ongoing challenge for the medical and dental professions. Multiple surgical and prosthetic approaches have been used. Commissure splint therapy is often effective in association with surgery in reducing the effects of scar contraction that ultimately results in microstomia and reduced quality of life. This article describes methods of fabrication of the commissure splint appliance, the rationale for its modification, advantages, and disadvantages.

The rare syndrome of the agnathia with microstomia, aglossia, synotia (the external ears approaching one another in the midline) and brain malformation (agnathia-holoprosencephaly) was reported by Pauli et al. (1983) as a developmental field defect. This syndrome has two subgroups. One is more severe with brain malformation (holoprosencephaly), and the other is less severe without brain malformation. This report presents a long surviving case of this syndrome without brain malformation.
