Adjunctive dietary intervention for bipolar disorder: a randomized, controlled, parallel-group, modified double-blinded trial of a high n-3 plus low n-6 diet.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the preliminary efficacy of a high n-3 plus low n-6 (H3-L6) dietary intervention in improving mood stability in Bipolar Disorder (BD) when compared to dietary intervention with usual U.S. levels of n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intakes (control diet, CD). METHODS: This 2-arm, parallel-group, randomized, modified double-blind, controlled 48-week study of 12-week intensive diet intervention in subjects with BD was conducted at a single suburban-rural site in the mid-Atlantic region. Participants with DSM-IV TR BD I or II with hypomanic or depressive sym

La Crosse Virus Disease in the United States, 2003-2019.

La Crosse virus (LACV) is an arthropod-borne virus that can cause a nonspecific febrile illness, meningitis, or encephalitis. We reviewed U.S. LACV surveillance data for 2003-2019, including human disease cases and nonhuman infections. Overall, 318 counties in 27 states, principally in the Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic, and southeastern regions, reported LACV activity. A total of 1,281 human LACV disease cases were reported, including 1,183 (92%) neuroinvasive disease cases. The median age of cases was 8 years (range: 1 month-95 years); 1,130 (88%) were aged < 18 years, and 754 (59%) were male. Th

The development of a successful multiregional kidney paired donation program.

BACKGROUND: Kidney paired donation (KPD) is increasing the number of living donor transplants. Two major obstacles prevent moving KPD forward in the United States: (1) achieving a critical mass of pairs to efficiently find matches and (2) efficiently coordinating KPD transplants between multiple transplant centers. Two large regional programs, The New England Program for Kidney Exchange (NEPKE) and the Mid-Atlantic Paired Exchange Program (MAPEP) have developed a system of protocols to effectively increase the number of KPD transplants. METHODS: Incompatible pairs and nondirected donors (NDD)

Hereditary pancreatitis in North America: the Pittsburgh-Midwest Multi-Center Pancreatic Study Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary pancreatitis (HP) was defined on a clinical basis alone until the first cationic trypsinogen gene (PRSS1) mutation was discovered through the initial phase of the current Pittsburgh Midwest Multi-Center Pancreatic Study Group (MMPSG) HP study in 1996, making genetic testing available. AIM: To evaluate the regional distribution of HP in the United States, and to compare the study's gene mutation database with the pedigree databases to determine whether family history alone predicts the likelihood of detecting mutations in the cationic trypsinogen gene. METHODS: Probands

HAEMOSPORIDIANS AS POTENTIAL SOURCES OF GEOGRAPHIC MARKERS FOR IRRUPTIVE BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES.

Migratory birds can carry parasites thousands of miles, and therefore their parasite communities may provide an informative means of ascertaining the breeding and wintering locations of their hosts. However, avian parasites (particularly haemosporidians) are rarely used for this purpose because their usefulness is conditional upon knowing where and when birds acquired them during their annual cycles. In this study, we evaluated haemosporidian assemblages among non-resident black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), which occasionally "irrupt" south from parts of their northern distributio

Using Ancestry-Informative SNPs to Quantify Introgression of European Alleles into North American Red Foxes.

A recent study demonstrated that British red foxes introduced to the mid-Atlantic coastal plain (ACP) of the eastern United States during the late 18th century successfully interbred with indigenous American red foxes despite half a million year's divergence. However, a large disparity in frequency of European mitochondria (27%) versus Y chromosomes (1%) left unclear the magnitude of genetic exchange. We sought to quantify genomic introgression using 35 autosomal and 5 X-chromosome ancestry-informative markers (AIMs) in conjunction with diagnostic Y chromosome single nucleotide polymorphism (Y

Reproductive cycle and fecundity of the bonnethead Sphyrna tiburo L. from the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

The present study examined temporal changes in plasma sex hormone concentrations and the morphology and histology of reproductive organs in mature northwest Atlantic (NWA) bonnetheads Sphyrna tiburo L. to characterize reproductive cycle, breeding periodicity and fertility in this still poorly studied population. Progressive increases in testis width, epididymis head width, plasma testosterone (T) concentrations, and occurrence of mature spermatozoa were observed in male S. tiburo from June to September, demonstrating that spermatogenesis occurs during the summer. Nonetheless, increases in maxi

Large-scale toxic bloom of Dinophysis acuminata complex following a major flood disaster in southern Brazil.

Dinophysis species are the main producers of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) in the Southwestern Atlantic, where recurrent blooms frequently lead to shellfish harvesting bans. In 2024, an extreme rainfall event over Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, caused one of the most severe floods ever recorded in the country, and generated an anomalous freshwater discharge through the Patos Lagoon estuary. The resulting low-salinity plume spread northward along the southern Brazilian coast, reaching aquaculture areas hundreds of kilometers away from the estuary. Here, we integrate hydrological

Genetic diversity and intercontinental dispersal of temperate and subarctic populations of Dibothriocephalus dendriticus (Cestoda; Diphyllobothriidea), a causative agent of dibothriocephalosis.

The diphyllobothriid tapeworm Dibothriocephalus dendriticus, one of the causative agents of the fish-borne zoonosis dibothriocephalosis, is mainly distributed in the Arctic/subarctic and temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, North America, and Asia), but also in the southern cone region of South America (Patagonia). The genetic structure and gene flow among 589 individuals of D. dendriticus, representing 20 populations, were studied using the mitochondrial cox1 gene as the first choice marker and 10 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci as a dominant molecular tool. Soil-derived dissolved organic matter and nutrient sources from urban stormwater control measures.

There has been significant investment in stormwater control measures (SCM) to reduce erosion, filter pollutants, and mitigate peak storm flows within urban watersheds. SCMs have variable hydrologic connectivity to downstream waterbodies where SCMs may rapidly export water during storm events but dry up in-between events and these alternating wet/dry cycles influence the biogeochemical processes that occur in SCM soils. While the performance of SCMs has been evaluated for nutrient removal, less is known about the potential for mobilization of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) that ac

A policy-based school intervention to prevent overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and seriousness of childhood obesity has prompted calls for broad public health solutions that reach beyond clinic settings. Schools are ideal settings for population-based interventions to address obesity. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work was to examine the effects of a multicomponent, School Nutrition Policy Initiative on the prevention of overweight (85.0th to 94.9th percentile) and obesity (> 95.0th percentile) among children in grades 4 through 6 over a 2-year period. METHODS: Participants were 1349 students in grades 4 through 6 from 10 schools in a US cit

Distinct YFV Lineages Co-circulated in the Central-Western and Southeastern Brazilian Regions From 2015 to 2018.

The current outbreak of yellow fever virus (YFV) that is afflicting Brazil since the end of 2016 probably originated from a re-introduction of YFV from endemic areas into the non-endemic Southeastern Brazil. However, the lack of genomic sequences from endemic regions hinders the tracking of YFV's dissemination routes. We assessed the origin and spread of the ongoing YFV Brazilian outbreak analyzing a new set of YFV strains infecting humans, non-human primates (NHPs) and mosquitoes sampled across five Brazilian states from endemic and non-endemic regions between 2015 and 2018. We found two YFV

A sex-based analysis of complete blood count features during acute, untreated Lyme disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although lymphopenia has been described in acute Lyme disease (LD), the complete blood count (CBC) has not been comprehensively examined, nor have sex-based analyses been conducted. We analyzed CBC values and identified sex-based trends among patients with early LD by comparing both to controls without a history of LD and to patients' pre-morbid values. METHODS: We enrolled participants from the Mid-Atlantic US with diagnostic erythema migrans and controls with no history of LD. CBC results were obtained, and patient information was recorded using standardized instruments. We al

Geospatial Analysis of Drug Poisoning Deaths Involving Heroin in the USA, 2000-2014.

We investigate the geographic patterns of drug poisoning deaths involving heroin by county for the USA from 2000 to 2014. The county-level patterns of mortality are examined with respect to age-adjusted rates of death for different classes of urbanization and racial and ethnic groups, while rates based on raw counts of drug poisoning deaths involving heroin are estimated for different age groups and by gender. To account for possible underestimations in these rates due to small areas or small numbers, spatial empirical Baye's estimation techniques have been used to smooth the rates of death an

Phylogeography and host specificity of Pasteurellaceae pathogenic to sea-farmed fish in the north-east Atlantic.

The present study was undertaken to address the recent spate of pasteurellosis outbreaks among sea-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norway and Scotland, coinciding with sporadic disease episodes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for delousing purposes in salmon farms. Genome assemblies from 86 bacterial isolates cultured from diseased salmon or lumpfish confirmed them all as bona fide members of the Pasteurellaceae family, with phylogenetic reconstruction dividing them into two distinct branches sharing <88% average nucleotide identity. These branches therefore constitute two separa

The cardiovascular effects of interleukin-6 inhibition in patients with severe coronavirus-19 infection.

ObjectiveThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic illustrated the relationship between cardiac arrhythmias and pro-inflammatory states. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), have significant effects on cardiac conduction. Atrial or ventricular arrhythmias occurring while infected results in a doubling of mortality. Tocilizumab, a monoclonal antibody that blocks the IL-6 receptor, is associated with improved mortality and is believed to be related to immune modulation of the COVID-19-related hyperinflammatory state.MethodsA single-center retrospective review of all
