Reimagining peer-led support in doctoral nursing and midwifery education: A collaborative autoethnographic case study.

AIM: To explore how peer-led initiatives can enhance connection, belonging and sustainability within higher degree by research (HDR) nursing and midwifery programmes. BACKGROUND: HDR study can be an isolating experience, often characterised by fragmented support and limited opportunities for structured peer learning. While institutions provide formal mechanisms for supervision and progress, less attention has been given to student-led approaches that cultivate inclusive scholarly communities and sustained peer engagement. DESIGN: Collaborative autoethnographic case study. METHODS: HDR stude

Towards a National Nursing and Midwifery Research Agenda: Validating Priorities Through Expert Consensus in Qatar.

INTRODUCTION: Qatar's ongoing healthcare transformation, aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030, underscores the need for a robust nursing and midwifery research agenda to drive systemic improvements. While an earlier Delphi study identified initial research priorities, its stakeholder representation was limited in scope and diversity. OBJECTIVE: To validate and refine Qatar's national nursing and midwifery research priorities through an expanded expert consensus. METHODS: This study represents Phase Four of a previously conducted Delphi project. A new panel of 20 experts from public, p

Preparing for implementation: Identifying contextual factors influencing internal quality assurance in midwifery education in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: High-quality maternal and newborn care relies on competent midwives, placing high demands on midwifery education. Continuous internal quality assurance is essential for meeting accreditation standards yet remains understudied, particularly in low- and middle-resource settings. AIM: The aim of this study was to identify contextual factors preparing for implementation of an internal quality assurance process in midwifery education in Bangladesh. METHODS: A qualitative inductive design, guided by process evaluation principles for complex interventions. Data was collected through foc

Perspectives from Black Midwifery Leaders on Scaling Culturally Affirming and Community-Centered Models of Care.

INTRODUCTION: Black midwifery practice leaders are reimagining perinatal care for Black women and birthing people by designing and implementing innovative culturally affirming community models of care. They possess a unique lens on the factors that sustain and threaten their innovative work. The aim of this study was to explore Black midwives' perspectives on the components of these models of care, their leadership experiences, and facilitators and barriers of scaling these models for maximal impact for Black women and birthing people throughout the United States. METHODS: We purposively iden

'Hands on', 'hands off' or 'hands poised'? Exploring intrapartum midwifery decision making through ethnographic research.

ISSUE: Injury to the perineal tissues during childbirth is a frequent occurrence with most women likely to experience perineal injury during a first birth which, in some cases, can lead to significant long-term morbidity. The techniques used to minimise perineal injury are frequently termed 'hands on' and 'hands poised' or 'hands off'. These terms are often undefined and used inconsistently in the literature, making it difficult to identify the best available evidence to inform midwifery practice. AIM: This study aimed to answer the research questions: What do midwives do to minimise perineal

Education of postpartum hemorrhage management clinical skills among midwifery students in Malawi: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Unskilled health professionals in healthcare systems are contributing to the high numbers of maternal mortality in Malawi. It is therefore essential that midwifery students acquire postpartum hemorrhage management clinical skills, especially in view of high maternal mortality, with postpartum hemorrhage being the leading cause. However, there is limited evidence on how the teaching is conducted with regard to students' learning of postpartum hemorrhage management clinical skills. PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the current teaching of postpartum hemorrhage management clinica

COSMOS: COmparing Standard Maternity care with one-to-one midwifery support: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In Australia and internationally, there is concern about the growing proportion of women giving birth by caesarean section. There is evidence of increased risk of placenta accreta and percreta in subsequent pregnancies as well as decreased fertility; and significant resource implications. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of continuity of midwifery care have reported reduced caesareans and other interventions in labour, as well as increased maternal satisfaction, with no statistically significant differences in perinatal morbidity or mortality. RCTs conducted in the UK and in Aus

Vaginal birth after cesarean section: a pilot study of outcomes in women receiving midwifery care.

A recent trend discouraging or not offering women a choice to labor after a cesarean birth has resulted in higher cesarean birth rates and lower rates of vaginal birth after cesarean birth (VBAC). The few studies describing midwifery practice have demonstrated favorable outcomes; however, the studies are too small to thoroughly evaluate critical outcomes. In this retrospective descriptive study, clinical outcome data were obtained from eight midwifery practices. The aims were to collect, aggregate, and analyze data from multiple midwifery practices and then describe outcomes. Usable data repre

Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS): A retrospective cohort study exploring perinatal outcomes and consumer satisfaction.

PROBLEM: Maternity consumer and workforce preference is for continuity of midwifery care, with on-call arrangements identified as a key barrier. BACKGROUND: The Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS) enables midwives to provide antenatal and postnatal continuity without on-call or intrapartum care requirements. High satisfaction has been reported amongst midwives and women. Limited research has explored associated clinical outcomes. AIM: To explore perinatal outcomes of women who received MAPS care against a matched sample who received standard fragmented care, contextualised by qualit

Examining autonomy's boundaries: a follow-up review of perinatal mortality cases in UK independent midwifery.

BACKGROUND: An earlier matched cohort study in the United Kingdom found a significantly higher perinatal mortality rate for births booked under an independent midwife compared with births in National Health Service units (1.7% [25/1,508] vs 0.6% [45/7,366]). This study examined independent midwives' management and decision making in the 15 instances of perinatal death that occurred at term. METHODS: Thematic analysis of independent midwives' case notes was performed in instances of perinatal mortality. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the midwives concerned. RESULTS: Home birth

Quality of antenatal care as perceived by women participating in a midwifery continuity of care (MCoC) model in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care plays a vital role in preparing women for childbirth and the postpartum period. Midwifery continuity models may enhance the quality of antenatal care. AIM: To explore women's experiences regarding the organisation and content of antenatal care among participants in a midwifery continuity of care (MCoC) project. METHODS: a prospective cohort study of 142 women experiencing fear of birth or depressive symptoms. This project offered two alternatives for antenatal care: 'full continuity' with the MCoC midwives (Model A), or a mixed option with health check-ups with a l

Continuity of midwifery care in war-related bereavement and partner trauma: Emotional labour, boundaries and supervision.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in contexts of war-related bereavement and partner trauma creates complex demands on midwives who may accompany women through prolonged grief, uncertainty and psychological distress. Although emotional labour and secondary traumatic stress in midwifery have been widely discussed, less is known about midwives providing continuity of care when trauma is ongoing rather than event-based. AIM: To examine how midwives' experiences of providing continuity of care in contexts of war-related bereavement and partner trauma were documented, interpreted, and professionally processed
