Impulse control disorders in chronic migraine with medication overuse after onabotulinumtoxinA: A single-center prospective cohort study.

Chronic migraine (CM) with medication overuse headache (MOH) is one of the most common and disabling chronic headache disorders associated with both frequencies of use of medication and behavioral alterations, including psychopathology and psychological drug dependence. Several previous studies on large patient samples have demonstrated the efficacy of Onabotulinum toxin A (OnabotA) on physical symptomatology treatment of headache, but effects on behavioral alterations remain still debate. Our study investigated the effects of OnabotA on psychiatric comorbidities and on quality of life of pati

Comorbidity in Migraine with Functional Somatic Syndromes, Psychiatric Disorders and Inflammatory Diseases: A Matter of Central Sensitization?

To approach the questions as to why migraine appears to be associated with functional somatic syndromes (FSSs) and whether central sensitization may be an underlying mechanism, the present study investigated (a) comorbidity with diagnoses of three FSSs, three psychiatric disorders, and three inflammatory diseases, (b) degree of mental health problems (stress, burnout, anxiety, depression and somatization), and (c) prevalence of ten cognitive/affective and nine airway symptoms in persons with migraine in the general population. From a randomized and stratified Swedish adult sample, questionnair

Are migraine and bipolar disorders comorbid phenomena?: findings from a pharmacoepidemiological study using the Norwegian Prescription Database.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical, epidemiological, and, recently, genome-wide linkage and genome-wide association studies suggest migraine and bipolar disorder are comorbid phenomena. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is also evidence that this comorbidity exists by virtue of there being a positive relationship between the prescription of medications used to treat migraine and mood-stabilizing agents using the National Norwegian Prescription Database. METHODS: Data allowing ascertainment of the concurrence of prescriptions for migraine and mood-stabilizing agents were gleaned fro

Migraine, Stroke, and Cervical Arterial Dissection: Shared Genetics for a Triad of Brain Disorders With Vascular Involvement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Migraine, stroke, and cervical artery dissection (CeAD) represent a triad of cerebrovascular disorders with pairwise comorbid relationships and vascular involvement. Larger samples and recent advances in methodology invite systematic exploration of their shared genetics. METHODS: Genetic analyses leveraged summary statistics from genome-wide association studies of the largest available samples of each disorder, including subtypes of stroke (ischemic stroke, large artery stroke, small vessel stroke, and cardioembolic stroke) and migraine (with aura and without aura).

Visual snow syndrome, the spectrum of perceptual disorders, and migraine as a common risk factor: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this narrative review is to explore the relationship between visual snow syndrome (VSS), migraine, and a group of other perceptual disorders. BACKGROUND: VSS is characterized by visual snow and additional visual and nonvisual disturbances. The clinical picture suggests a hypersensitivity to internal and external stimuli. Imaging and electrophysiological findings indicate a hyperexcitability of the primary and secondary visual areas of the brain possibly due to an impairment of inhibitory feedback mechanisms. Migraine is the most frequent comorbidity. Epidemiological and

Association between psychological disorders and migraine in young U.S. adults with gender-specific analysis and marital status considerations.

BACKGROUND: Emerging biopsychosocial perspectives emphasize the complex interplay between psychological burden and migraine, particularly during young adulthood-a period marked by neurodevelopmental vulnerability and shifting social roles. However, gender-specific associations and the modifying role of marital status in this context remain poorly understood. METHODS: This population-based study analyzed 3,180 U.S. young adults aged 20-39 years using the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Migraine was identified via self-reported symptoms and medication use; psychologi

Sex and stress hormone dysregulation as clinical manifestations of hypothalamic function in migraine disorder: A meta-analysis.

Migraine is a leading cause of disability in young adults. It occurs more frequently in females, often comorbidly with stress disorders, suggesting an association with hypothalamic sex and stress hormonal function and a likely interaction with autonomic nervous system activation. Thus, this study aimed to meta-analyse current literature pertaining to female and male sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone concentration), hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) cortisol responses and heart rate variability (HRV) in migraineurs and controls aged 13-65 years. A systematic sea
