Hearing and balance disorders affect people of all ages. Among children, hearing loss affects speech and language development, academic performance, and psychosocial development. Hearing loss in adults negatively impacts work productivity, cognitive function, and psychosocial status. Prevalence of hearing loss in children in Hawai'i is higher than the national average. Research indicates that hearing loss is a prevalent condition among veterans and advanced age adults. This is of particular concern in Hawai'i as the state is home to many military training facilities and has a large elderly pop

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury is theorized to cause widespread functional changes to the brain. Resting-state fMRI may be able to measure functional connectivity changes after traumatic brain injury, but resting-state fMRI studies are heterogeneous, using numerous techniques to study ROIs across various resting-state networks.
PURPOSE: We systematically reviewed the literature to ascertain whether adult patients who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury show consistent functional connectivity changes on resting-state -fMRI, compared with healthy patients.

BACKGROUND: War-related trauma is associated with substantial mental health burden, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). These presentations often co-occur with depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, sleep disturbance, functional impairment, and moral injury, complicating assessment and treatment. Despite growing research on trauma in conflict-affected populations, recent evidence remains uneven across active-duty personnel, veterans, civilians, refugees, internally displaced persons, and children.
METHODS: Studies published in English between 202

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition affecting 5.7 % of the global population in their lifetime. There is a strong association between trauma-related nightmares and insomnia with higher rates of physical illness, mental distress, and suicide among PTSD patients. Prazosin, an α1-adrenergic antagonist, has shown mixed results in treating these sleep disturbances. This study aims to evaluate the effect of prazosin compared to placebo on insomnia, nightmares, and global PTSD symptoms, and to examine variables that might influence this effect. We conducted a meta-analysi

Human adenovirus type 55 (HAdV-55), formerly designated as HAdV-11a, is a notable recombinant pathogen linked to severe respiratory infections. Since its reclassification as HAdV-55 in 2010, numerous outbreaks of pneumonia associated with it have been documented over the past decade. We conducted a systematic review of 111 peer-reviewed articles from PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) spanning the 60 years (1965-2024). Furthermore, we performed phylogenetic analysis on 87 complete HAdV-55 genomes available in GenBank. Bayesian methods were employed to es

The use of metaphors to talk about cancer experiences has attracted much research and debate, especially in the case of military metaphors. However, questions remain about what metaphors are used by different populations for different aspects of the cancer experience. This scoping review aims to answer them.We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Eligible sources include peer-reviewed scientific research published in English between 2013 and 2023, investigating patterns of metaphor use from adult populations (age ≥18) for cancer-related topics, such as cancer

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in both civilian and military populations, the management guidelines developed by the Joint Trauma System involve minimal recommendations for electrolyte physiology optimization during the acute phase of TBI recovery. This narrative review aims to assess the current state of the science for electrolyte and mineral derangements found after TBI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used Google Scholar and PubMed to identify literature on electrolyte derangements caused by TBI and supplements that may mitigate secondary injuries after TBI

François Pourfour du Petit (1664-1741) is one of the most versatile scientists in medical history. Trained as a surgeon, chemist, ophthalmologist, and botanist, Petit was an intellectual who combined science with observation and experimentation. Through meticulous examination of the complex structure of the human nervous system, Petit provided important experimental observations on the decussation of the pyramidal tract and offered influential insights into the origin of the sympathetic nervous system. These discoveries directly influenced both the understanding of neurological injuries and th

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal Sinus Disease (PSD) is a cause of serious morbidity with varied clinical presentations. The management of the disease has seen sea-changes in the last few decades. Endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT) involves the use of appropriately sized endoscope to delineate the anatomy of pilonidal sinus tract including any side branching tracts and ablating them using monopolar electrode under vision. Use of EPSiT in the Armed Forces settings has limited experience and we extended the use of EPSiT to ascertain its benefits in the manpower intensive military settings.

This paper describes an international collaboration to carry out studies that contributed to the understanding of pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of several diseases of public health importance for Thailand and the United States. In Kamphaeng Phet Province, Thailand, febrile syndromes, including encephalitis, hepatitis, hemorrhagic fever, and influenza-like illnesses, occurred commonly and were clinically diagnosed, but the etiology was rarely confirmed. Since 1982, the Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Hospital, the Thai Ministry of Public Health, and the US Army Component of the A
