Mindfulness as a therapeutic option for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent mental health issue characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that can cause significant life impairment. Despite cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) being the most effective treatment, some individuals experience insufficient symptom reduction or relapse. AREAS COVERED: This special report explores the potential of mindfulness-based interventions as complementary treatments for OCD, examining the specific techniques used and their practical application. In the initial section, the au

Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Schools: Assessing the Evidence Base.

OBJECTIVE: Mindfulness-based interventions are increasingly being used in schools to improve students' mental, emotional, and behavioral development. Although many mindfulness programs exist, the types of programs that are effective for specific age groups remain unclear. In this systematic review, the authors used established rating criteria to describe the level of evidence for school-based mindfulness interventions. METHODS: A search of major databases, gray literature, and evidence base registries was conducted to identify studies published between 2008 and 2022 that focused on mindfulnes

[Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for individuals with chronic headaches].

Introduction: Chronic headache is one of the most common health issues leading to long-term disability, which results not only in a decline in the quality of life but also increases depressive and anxiety-related symptoms. In the case of chronic pain, the effectiveness of acute pain relief is limited. International research increasingly highlights the importance of modifying psychological and behavioral factors associated with pain. According to the literature, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has been proven effective in reducing the burden of chronic headaches, primarily by improving the

Mindfulness and Cardiometabolic Health During Pregnancy: An Integrative Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiometabolic health during pregnancy has potential to influence long-term chronic disease risk for both mother and offspring. Mindfulness practices have been associated with improved cardiometabolic health in non-pregnant populations. The objective was to evaluate diverse studies that explored relationships between prenatal mindfulness and maternal cardiometabolic health. METHOD: An integrative review was conducted in January 2023 across five databases to identify and evaluate studies of diverse methodologies and data types. Quantitative studies that examined mindfulness as an

Mindfulness and Management of Low Desire and Vulvovaginal Pain.

Mindfulness is defined as present-moment, nonjudgmental awareness. By reducing self-criticism, and depression, and increasing self-compassion, attention, and interoceptive awareness, mindfulness has been found across a variety of systematic reviews and meta-analyses to significantly improve sexual desire, sexual pain, and sex-related distress. It helps individuals connect with their bodies, fostering a deeper understanding of sensations and desires while reducing the focus on negative, judgmental, and catastrophic sex-related and pain-related thoughts. By teaching individuals to focus on bare

Adherence to CPAP Treatment: Can Mindfulness Play a Role?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is considered a chronic disease that requires long-term multidisciplinary management for effective treatment. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is still considered the gold standard of therapy. However, CPAP effectiveness is limited due to poor patients' adherence, as almost 50% of patients discontinue treatment after a year. Several interventions have been used in order to increase CPAP adherence. Mindfulness-based therapies have been applied in other sleep disorders such as insomnia but little evidence exists for their application on OSA patients. This

Mindfulness in Borderline Personality Disorder: Decentering Mediates the Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Oral dapsone has been available for over 60 years and has been used to treat severe acne vulgaris; however, the oral formulation is known to cause dose-dependent haematological reactions and is currently indicated only for diseases such as dermatitis herpetiformis and Hansen's disease. A gel formulation of dapsone was recently developed to treat acne vulgaris. As dapsone is administered topically, it was expected that systemic absorption would be considerably lower than that observed with oral dapsone therapy, thereby avoiding any adverse haematological effects. OBJECTIVE: To repo

Mindfulness Meditation for Primary Headache Pain: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that mindfulness meditation has a potential effect in controlling headaches, such as migraine and tension-type headache; however, its role remains controversial. This review assessed the evidence regarding the effects of mindfulness meditation for primary headache pain. METHODS: Only English databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [the Cochrane Library], PsycINFO, Psychology and behavioral science collection, PsyArticles, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched from their inception to November 2016 with the keywords ("medit

New Nursing Faculty and Incivility: Applying Mindfulness-Based Strategies.

Workplace incivility remains a problem within the nursing profession. As nurse leaders, we must recognize and not ignore the complexity of cultures that have adapted incivility into the work environment. Nursing education is a discipline that requires collaborative team work, independent drive, and commitment. New nursing faculty experiencing incivility can use mindfulness-based meditation approaches to cope with uncivil behaviors experienced within the workplace. Nurse educators applying the concepts of mindfulness can learn how to provide themselves self-care by reducing stress, as enhanced

Mindfulness buffers retaliatory responses to injustice: A regulatory approach.

We investigate the role of mindfulness as a regulatory factor by examining whether it mitigates the relationship between justice and retaliation. Drawing on theories of self-regulation, we integrate work on justice with emerging frameworks that identify mindfulness as an important work-related regulatory variable (Glomb, Duffy, Bono, & Yang, 2011). Specifically, we identify the role of mindfulness as a buffer of the ruminative thoughts and negative emotions that link injustice to retaliation. We test mediated moderation hypotheses in 2 samples. In Sample 1, two behavioral measures of retaliati

Mindfulness Training among Individuals with Parkinson's Disease: Neurobehavioral Effects.

Objective. To investigate possible neurobehavioral changes secondary to a mindfulness based intervention (MBI) training for individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD). Background. In the context of complementary medicine, MBIs are increasingly being used for stress reduction and in patient populations coping with chronic illness. The use of alternative and complementary medicine may be higher in patients with chronic conditions such as PD. However, behavioral effects of mindfulness training in PD have not yet been reported in the literature and this points to an unmet need and warrants f

Mindfulness and compassion: an examination of mechanism and scalability.

Emerging evidence suggests that meditation engenders prosocial behaviors meant to benefit others. However, the robustness, underlying mechanisms, and potential scalability of such effects remain open to question. The current experiment employed an ecologically valid situation that exposed participants to a person in visible pain. Following three-week, mobile-app based training courses in mindfulness meditation or cognitive skills (i.e., an active control condition), participants arrived at a lab individually to complete purported measures of cognitive ability. Upon entering a public waiting ar

Does mindfulness attenuate thoughts emphasizing negativity, but not positivity?

The current research investigated whether mindfulness is differentially associated with thoughts that emphasize positive or negative valence. In Study 1, trait mindfulness was inversely associated with negative rumination but unassociated with positive rumination, controlling for state affect. In Study 2, participants completed either a mindful breathing meditation or a comparable control exercise, followed by a thought listing while viewing affective images. Compared to the control condition, the mindfulness condition listed proportionately fewer negative thoughts, particularly in response to

Effect of mindfulness meditation on brain-computer interface performance.

Electroencephalogram based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) enable stroke and motor neuron disease patients to communicate and control devices. Mindfulness meditation has been claimed to enhance metacognitive regulation. The current study explores whether mindfulness meditation training can thus improve the performance of BCI users. To eliminate the possibility of expectation of improvement influencing the results, we introduced a music training condition. A norming study found that both meditation and music interventions elicited clear expectations for improvement on the BCI task, with the st

[Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy : current status and future applications].

Against the backdrop of dauntingly high prevalence rates of clinical depression and subsequent relapse, Segal, Teasdale and Williams (2002) sought to develop an intervention that would address the long-term sequence of depression. In the past decade, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been supported with a robust evidence base, highlighting its efficacy in the short, and long-term follow-up studies. Currently, novel adaptations of this intervention are being developed and piloted with a wide range of clinical issues that share amplified ruminative processes as a core feature of pathology.

Mindfulness and problem gambling: a review of the literature.

This article reviews the literature with respect to mindfulness and its potential for reducing the severity of problem gambling behaviour. Interest in the role of mindfulness as a treatment for problem gambling has gained the attention of researchers across Australia, the United States, and Canada. However, the literature is limited and current studies have severe methodological limitations. Despite this issue, investigations have revealed that dispositional mindfulness is related to less severe problem gambling outcomes and that psychological distress, overconfidence and risk willingness, myo

Thalamocortical orchestration of human theory of mind.

Reasoning about others' thoughts or beliefs is central to human social behavior. This ability, known as theory of mind (ToM), has been primarily attributed to cortical regions of the default network (DN). However, whether and how subcortical structures, particularly the thalamus, contribute to this high-level computation remains unknown. Here, we investigated human thalamocortical dynamics during a naturalistic ToM movie watching condition, taking a rare dual-modality approach by combining high-field 7T fMRI and intracranial stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG). Across both modalities, ToM even

Theory of mind in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a common idiopathic generalized epilepsy often accompanied by executive dysfunction, affective symptoms, unfavorable behavior, and social outcomes, yet its impact on theory of mind (ToM) remains underexplored. We conducted an unmatched case-control study assessing 34 JME patients and 48 healthy controls, adjusted for age, sex, education, intelligence quotient, anxiety, and depression. Participants completed a brief version of the Faux Pas Recognition Test (FPRT) and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, alongside measures of executive function, prospective
