Estimating the capacity for production of formamide by radioactive minerals on the prebiotic Earth.

Water creates special problems for prebiotic chemistry, as it is thermodynamically favorable for amide and phosphodiester bonds to hydrolyze. The availability of alternative solvents with more favorable properties for the formation of prebiotic molecules on the early Earth may have helped bypass this so-called "water paradox". Formamide (FA) is one such solvent, and can serve as a nucleobase precursor, but it is difficult to envision how FA could have been generated in large quantities or accumulated in terrestrial surface environments. We report here the conversion of aqueous acetonitrile (AC

Efficient removal of lead from solution by celery-derived biochars rich in alkaline minerals.

Biochars were produced from celery biomass by slow pyrolysis at 350 and 500°C, and featured by high content of alkaline minerals namely salts of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The biochars' efficiency on removing Pb2+ from solution was investigated, and two biochars derived from celery stalk (StC350 and StC500) showed higher Pb2+ sorption capacity (288 and 304mg/g) than most biochars reported previously. The sorption mechanisms involving precipitation, cation exchange and surface complexation are related to three biochar fractions namely water-soluble matter, acid-soluble substances and ins

Influence of Bifidobacterium bifidum on release of minerals from bread with differing bran content.

Bread is considered an important source of minerals; however, the presence of fiber and phytic acid reduces bioavailability of minerals from cereal products. It is well established that activity of microorganisms in human gut increases the amount of nutrients released during digestion. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of Bifidobacterium bifidum on release of some minerals from bread using an in vitro process of enzymatic digestion. White bread and with addition of 15, 30, or 45% of bran was baked in a bakery by traditional methods, with addition of yeasts and rye leaven, fr

Adhesion of the clay minerals montmorillonite, kaolinite, and attapulgite reduces respiration of Histoplasma capsulatum.

The respiration of three phenotypes of Histoplasma capsulatum, the causal agent of histoplasmosis in humans, was markedly reduced by low concentrations of montmorillonite but was reduced less by even higher concentrations of kaolinite or attapulgite (palygorskite). The reduction in respiration followed a pattern that suggested saturation-type kinetics: an initial sharp reduction that occurred with low concentrations of clay (0.01 to 0.5% [wt/vol]), followed by a more gradual reduction with higher concentrations (1 to 8%). Increases in viscosity (which could impair the movement of O2) caused by

Cationic radius drives reconstruction of the {101̄4} surface of minerals from the calcite group.

Reconstruction of the {101̄4} surface of minerals of the calcite group occurs in the same conditions as found for calcite when cations with ionic radius bigger or equal to that of calcium are present on the surface. Reconstruction is not observed with smaller cations in either pure or mixed phases.

Responses of Soil Organic Matter and Minerals to Winter and Growing Season Climate Change.

Changes to soil organic matter (SOM) in response to warming temperatures and a shrinking snowpack may exacerbate climate change due to carbon (C) cycle feedbacks. Winter is warming more rapidly than the growing season, resulting in declines in snowpack quantity and duration and leaving the soil without insulation from freezing air temperatures. Frozen soil can induce root and microbial mortality and create a barrier to O2 diffusion, which can impact SOM inputs, SOM storage mechanisms, and soil CO2 production. At the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experime

Minerals and Trace Elements: Key Protectors of Skin Health and Defenders against Skin Disorders.

Skin is the human body's largest organ, protecting it from various environmental threats. At the same time, it is the most accessible organ of the body, which ensures the reception of stimuli and contact with the environment. Such common signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration, result from both extrinsic and intrinsic factors that act for a long time. If the skin does not look well enough, it is worth investigating whether minerals or trace elements are deficient. The positive role of some minerals (calcium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, and magnesium) and trace eleme

Terrestrial iron sulfide minerals induce distinct regulation of intracellular redox homeostasis and iron assimilation.

Repeated exposure to airborne terrestrial natural minerals may cause pneumoconiosis and lung cancer, among which iron sulfide is identified as an aggravating factor. In the biological system, iron-sulfur cluster is an inorganic cofactor that is evolutionarily conserved in all the living organisms. Whereas ferrous iron catalyzes the generation of hydroxyl radicals, sulfur is indispensable as a component of antioxidants, such as glutathione. Imbalanced redox homeostasis contributes to oxidative stress, causing ferroptosis, an iron-dependent regulated necrosis characterized by lipid peroxidation,

Potential retention of dissolved organic matter by soil minerals during wetland water-table fluctuations.

Wetlands export large amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) downstream, which is sensitive to water-table fluctuations (WTFs). While numerous studies have shown that WTFs may decrease wetland DOC via enhancing DOC biodegradation, an alternative pathway, i.e., retention of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by soil minerals, remains under-investigated. Here, we conducted a water-table manipulation experiment on intact soil columns collected from three wetlands with varying contents of reactive metals and clay to examine the potential retention of DOM by soil minerals during WTFs. Using batch so

Quantification of flavonoids, minerals, and pigments present in "Nanicão" bananas during the ripening process.

Banana is one of the most consumed and popular fruits in all regions of the world, being cultivated mainly in tropical countries. It is not only a rich source of vitamins A, C, and B, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and other vitamins and nutrients, but it also contains several types of antioxidants with high nutritional value. In this context, the current study aimed to quantify the content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids, pigments, and minerals present in "Nanicão" bananas during the ripening process. As demonstrated, the level of flavonoids was higher in ripe and overripe fruits, whereas

Plant-minerals-water interactions: An investigation on Juncus acutus exposed to different Zn sources.

Juncus acutus has been proposed as a suitable species for the design of phytoremediation plans. This research aimed to investigate the role played by rhizosphere minerals and water composition on Zn transformations and dynamics in the rhizosphere-plant system of J. acutus exposed to different Zn sources. Rhizobox experiments were conducted using three different growing substrates (Zn from 137 to 20,400 mg/kg), and two irrigation lines (Zn 0.05 and 180 mg/l). The plant growth was affected by the substrate type, whereas the Zn content in the water did not significantly influence the plant height

Flotation surface chemistry of water-soluble salt minerals: from experimental results to new perspectives.

The flotation separation of water-soluble salt minerals has to be conducted under the condition of saturation in brines which represents a challenging but exciting topic of colloid and surface chemistry. Despite several proposals on explaining the success of this industrial application for many decades, our understanding of the flotation separation is still far from complete yet, owing to the complexity of the highly selective collection of salt crystals by air bubbles in brines. Here, we thoroughly review the experimental results for halogen, oxyanion, and double salts and match them with the
