Mineral nutrition and bone mineralization in full-term infants.

Bone mineralization is an intricate and tightly regulated process. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are the main minerals and play a principal role in skeletal mineralization. The following conclusions can be derived from different clinical studies. The large differences in Ca/P ratio between different formulas and between formulas and human milk suggest that most healthy full-term infants can adjust to a wide range of Ca/P ratio in their diet. The differences in serum levels of mineral and of mineral-regulating hormones are rarely clinically significant and most probably reflect continued co

Unmet Occupational Health Needs of Malawian Ex-Miners from the South African Gold Mines.

Background: From early in its history, gold mining in South Africa involved recruiting hundreds of thousands of workers from Malawi and other neighbouring countries to work in an environment conducive to high rates of tuberculosis and silicosis. Official recruitment from Malawi ended in the 1990s, depriving large numbers of these migrant miners of their livelihood, with limited or no access to employment-linked social benefits and services. Objectives: To describe barriers faced by Malawian migrant ex-gold miners in accessing social benefits related to occupational lung disease and related hea

Mortality and cancer incidence among underground uranium miners in the Czech Republic 1977-1992.

OBJECTIVES: Uranium miners in Příbram, Czech Republic were exposed to low and moderate levels of radon gas and other hazards. It is unknown whether these hazards increase the risk of mortality or cancer incidence when compared with the general Czech population. METHODS: A cohort of 16 434 male underground miners employed underground for at least 1 year between 1946 and 1976, and alive and residing in the Czech Republic in 1977, were followed for mortality and cancer incidence through 1992. We compared observed deaths and cancer incidence to expectation based on Czech rates. Standardised morta

Applying a health action model to predict and improve healthy behaviors in coal miners.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most important ways to prevent work-related diseases in occupations such as mining is to promote healthy behaviors among miners. This study aimed to predict and promote healthy behaviors among coal miners by using a health action model (HAM). METHOD: The study was conducted on 200 coal miners in Iran in two steps. In the first step, a descriptive study was implemented to determine predictive constructs and effectiveness of HAM on behavioral intention. The second step involved a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of an HAM-based education intervention. Th

Histopathologic Analysis of Lung Cancer Incidence Associated with Radon Exposure among Ontario Uranium Miners.

Although radon is a well-established contributor to lung cancer mortality among uranium miners, the effects of radon decay products on different histopathologies of lung carcinoma are not well established. Using a retrospective cohort design, this study aims to examine the risks of lung cancer by histological subtypes associated with exposure to radon decay products among the Ontario Uranium Miners cohort. Cases were stratified by histological groups, and associated risks were estimated for cumulative radon exposure after adjustment for attained age and calendar period. Between 1969 and 2005,

[FEATURES OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OF MINERS, WHO ARE VICTIMS OF METHANE-COAL MIXTURE EXPLOSION].

The article studied an influence of operative treatment on miners in the stage of burn shock, complicated by multi- and combined trauma and how these treatment options have changed the lethality and burn complications rates. All data based on an analysis of retrospective research. A primary surgical treatment of burn wounds was performed using simultaneous grafting by temporary biological cover for superficial burns during the burn shock stage in the main group of patients. For miners of comparison group this strategy hasn't been applied and they were operated after ending of burn shock. The r

Rapid decline in lung function in coal miners: evidence of disease in small airways.

BACKGROUND: Coal mine dust exposure can cause both pneumoconiosis and chronic airflow limitation. The contributions of various pathophysiologic mechanisms to dust-related lung function decrements remain unclear. METHODS: Clinical and physiological findings were assessed for 15 underground coal miners who had demonstrated accelerated FEV1 losses (decliners) over 6-18 years. Decliners' findings were evaluated in comparison to a group of 11 miners who had shown relatively stable lung function (referents) during the same period. RESULTS: At follow-up examination, the decliners showed significant

Outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever among miners in Kamwenge and Ibanda Districts, Uganda, 2007.

Marburg hemorrhagic fever was detected among 4 miners in Ibanda District, Uganda, from June through September, 2007. Infection was likely acquired through exposure to bats or bat secretions in a mine in Kamwenge District, Uganda, and possibly human-to-human transmission between some patients. We describe the epidemiologic investigation and the health education response.

Occupational and diagnostic exposure to ionizing radiation and leukemia risk among German uranium miners.

Lung cancer is a well-known effect of radon exposure in uranium mines. However, little is known about the induction of leukemia by radiation exposure in mines. Moreover, miners usually have occupational medical checkup programs that include chest x-ray examinations. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to re-examine leukemia risk among miners, taking into account exposure to x rays for diagnostic purposes. The data used were from a previously analyzed individually matched case-control study of former uranium miners in East Germany with 377 cases and 980 controls. Additionally, data on x

Pulmonary lesions and serum levels of soluble Fas (sCD95) in former hard coal miners.

OBJECTIVE: Fas/APO-1 (CD95) and Fas Ligand (FasL) is a major mediator system that activates programmed cell death (apoptosis) and is most important for pulmonary cellular homeostasis. Another form of Fas, circulating soluble Fas (sCD95), produced by alternative mRNA splicing antagonizes the cell-surface Fas function. It was the aim of the study to test the hypothesis that the Fas/FasL system is implicated in the development of silica-induced pulmonary nodular lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated the serum levels of sCD95 in 55 former hard coal miners. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (C

Lung function loss in relation to silica dust exposure in South African gold miners.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate exposure-response relationships between respirable dust, respirable quartz and lung function loss in black South African gold miners. METHODS: 520 mineworkers aged >37 years were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Gravimetric dust measurements were used to calculate cumulative respirable dust and quartz exposures. Excess lung function loss was defined as predicted minus observed forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)) and forced vital capacity (FVC). The association between excess loss and exposure was estimated, adjusting for smoking, tuberculosis and silicos

Mortality risk in the French cohort of uranium miners: extended follow-up 1946-1999.

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents the risk of death from lung cancer and from other causes of death for the French cohort of uranium miners through 1999 and estimates associations with radon exposure. METHODS: The cohort includes men employed as uranium miners for at least 1 year between 1946 and 1990. For each miner, vital status and cause of death were obtained from the national registry, and radon exposure was reconstructed for each year. Standardised mortality ratios were computed with national mortality rates as references. Exposure-risk relationships were estimated by Poisson regression,

The impact of HIV infection on Mycobacterium kansasii disease in South African gold miners.

The impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on Mycobacterium kansasii disease in miners was investigated with a retrospective study covering a single workforce. M. kansasii, isolated from 43 HIV-positive and 202 HIV-negative miners, was the most common nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) species in both HIV groups. CD4 counts were unusually high for M. kansasii disease (mean 490 x 10(6)/L, from 14 HIV-positive men). Treatment outcomes were similar: mortality during treatment was higher in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative men (9% and 2%, respectively), but not significantly so. T
